Machine Binding a Table Runner

Machine binding - this is how I do it. For those project that don't require hand binding. For those who have a really hard time hand stitching (like myself). For those projects that you just want to get done! Give it a try. Test first. Many people have said that the outcome was awful the first time they machine bound. It takes some practice! Thank you so much. The clamps actually came with my cutie frame. The frame has elastic bands with hooks that hook on to the blue clamps to keep the quilt in place. I hope this helps. This cutie frame was the original frame, I am not sure if they changed anything since.

    • @FogDogStudios
      @FogDogStudios Місяць тому

      @myk2985 Ruler plates are specific to the machine. It attaches to the machine. If you are using a domestic machine on the cutie frame, I would check with Sew Steady. If you are using a long arm, check with the long arm manufacturer or sew steady.

    Only started watching this...your intro sounds just like me. Sewed many many years ago (embarassing to say how many), but got the urge to sew again from a friend. Pulled out my ancient machine, which still works like a charm, but decided to treat myself to the Babylock Lyric. What a change from my old one. So as I start to watch your video, will be excited to see what you have experienced too! Thank you.

      @dimples6596 Thank you so much. You will have to weigh it out. To visualize, you could cut a piece of paper at around 6 1/2” which after the take up poll is accounted for, is about what you will have. Will that be enough space for you to work in? Just a thought. You will make the right decision for you!

    Nice! I’m still trying to figure out how to FMQ. Just out of curiosity, what speed do you have it on? I’ve seen several videos that say “pedal to the metal”, but for me I have trouble controlling it (ruler slips or I get off track).

    • @FogDogStudios
      @FogDogStudios 6 місяців тому

      I don’t think there is an exact to FMQ. It is getting a feel for it and what you want to do. Getting a consistent stitch is the goal and not as easy as it may seem. I am keep my machine in the middle as far as speed goes (most of the time). I will slow it down if I am trying out something new. Everyone is different and you have to find your speed. There is a quilter who does absolutely gorgeous work and she is in the slowest possible speed available. The trick is getting your hands to move with the speed of your needle to create the nice even stitch spacing. Practice. Lots of practice. You can do it!!!

    Your quilt is so cute . I just bought a cutie frame and have not used it yet . Your video has helped me so much on how to use it . I have a question ,what kind of spray based do you use so it don’t gum up the needle I use June tailor spray bast and it gums up the needle so bad .I hate using pins . After watching you ,I’m excited to get started .

    • @FogDogStudios
      @FogDogStudios 8 місяців тому

      Thank you so much! I have used both, I prefer 505 (it doesn’t smell as strong). The big key to using spray baste, after you have sprayed basted everything, let it sit over night (at least 4 hours) before you start quilting it. I didn’t really have a problem after that. Good luck and have fun!

    I, too, recently bought a used Babylock Regalia. It was only used as a demo in a local fabric shop. One of their employees dismantled and serviced it, before bringing it to my house and setting it up. He even gave me a quick lesson on the basics of the machine. I have not found time to work on it more than twice a week, but have really enjoyed learning what all it is capable of doing. I have 14 charity quilts waiting to be quilted. I feel like I have a good handle on ProStitcher, but tension has caused some grief. I know i will be able to produce quality quilting one day, but there is definitely a lot more to it than I realized.😊

      Congratulations!!!! Super exciting! AND YES! There is quite a bit more to it. Once I had my bobbin dialed in, I haven’t had much of an issue with tension. I've been watching quite a number of your videos. I'd love a Q'nique 19 but it's out of the budget right now. I'm waiting to set things up until we move in the middle of next month. I can see I need to make a trip to JoAnn's for some muslin for leader clothes. I ordered bungies for my sides for when I might need them. I purchased a tablet at a good price so I can later order the Pro 5 for automation. For now I have a stitch regulator on order to add to use on my Pfaff Creative Icon 1. It's got about a 12" throat. This is the least expensive way for me to get started. Wish me luck. You've made everything look so easy so far. I'm going to order a ruler table from Sew Steady. I already have lots of rulers but I can see where the automation with Pro 5 will really help me. Can't wait to get started.

    • @FogDogStudios
      @FogDogStudios Рік тому

      Enjoy the process. There is a learning curve to the Q19, best thing I had done until I upgraded to a longarm on a 12’ frame with automation. Game changer.

  • @DD-ek8qc

    Where do you get leader clothes. I’m using a domestic machine with my Cutie? Or is this something I could make using muslin, marking center? Should I make any other markings on the muslin?

    • @FogDogStudios
      @FogDogStudios Рік тому

      The leader cloths I use came from Grace. I usually only use the one and I rarely center anything as I am constantly shifting my quilt around. The leader cloths are made from a duck or twill type of fabric. Honestly, my go to is leftover batting. It holds better when clamped. Works great. The marking and centering are necessary when loading on a Longarm frame and not important on a hoop frame.

    • @DD-ek8qc
      @DD-ek8qc Рік тому

      Thanks. I watched many UA-cam and many use 10” of extra batting and backing. Would I make my leader 10”, mark center and just pin my quilt top, batting, and backing down and go for it. Should I mark about 5” down or so to start pinning then roll down to the top and go for it? I usually do larger quilts. Kings and queens. Eventually I’d like to get automation software. I’m never going to have room for a larger frame. Do you have the software? If so do you like it? What type tablet is needed? Windows? Android?

    • @FogDogStudios
      @FogDogStudios Рік тому

      In my experience, it is important to center when using a long arm on a full size table. I personally have never marked or used markings while using the cutie frame because I am always moving the quilt around. Honestly a 10” wide piece of batting at least the length of the frame (4’). 12” squares work fantastic for the sides. Test it out and see what works for you!

    I have never run into problems with spray base on my quilts. I use flannel and minky fabric on 95 % of my quilts. I also use a indoor outdoor fabric for my leader and bungee clips for side

      I haven’t had too many issues either. Some have. My go to is left over batting. Holds great when clamped.

    Do you ever backstitch? When you finish one area and want to move to another.

      I do, all of the time now. When I first started out I didn’t really know I should.

      @@FogDogStudios Thank you for your help! From what I can tell from watching other quilters they take several stitches in place to secure the thread. Is this as good as backstitching?
