Setting up and using the Cutie Frame

  • The Cutie Frame by Grace Company is a small tabletop hoop frame for those of us that just don't have the space for a larger hoop frame or full size table.
    It's adjustable and upgradable. By that I mean you can start with your domestic sewing machine and upgrade to either a Q'nique 15 or Q'nique 19. I started with my Juki TL-2010Q and after one sample practice sandwich and one quilt, I upgraded to the Q'nique 19.

    I just bought a Cutie Frame, and have it partially set up. I have to do this all in little bits and pieces because of other obligations (like taking car of my two year old grandson!). I just have to clear off my quilting table and then I can finish assembling and trying out a sampler quilt. I will be following you for tips and tricks, I'm sure you will find many! Thanks for the video!!!

    I got my Cutie for Christmas. It took me longer than 45 minutes to put together, but I’m slow! LOL My small Brother only has a 6” throat, so I’m looking to buy a Baby Lock or Juki (like yours) so I’m not so limited in the space I can quilt. I’m really looking forward to using my new Cutie! Thank you so much for your tutorial! Happy New Year and God bless you!

    This is the first non advertising video I have seen on this frame so thank you for posting it. I shall be looking at your updates with a few questions in mind .... Has this worked out easier on your shoulders? I have had a couple of years of frozen shoulders which has me trying to find ways of working with less stress on my shoulders. ... how awkward is the frame to store if you can’t have it out permanently?

    • @FogDogStudios
      @FogDogStudios  3 роки тому

      Thank you! This has really worked out great for me (I've also had frozen shoulder)! It is comfortable at table height and because it is so easy to move, much less problematic than constantly pushing a quilt around under my domestic. I have not tried to store the frame (I've had quilts on it since I got it). I think it would slide easily under a bed. When the front bars are lowered for storage it is about 9 1/2" tall x 48" across and 30" deep. I am really liking it so far. I've had it for a little over a month now.

      @@FogDogStudios I also have frozen shoulders. Boy they hurt. My next step is to try and put on the Leaders and a quilt. That will keep me busy until my foot pedal attachment comes. Any words to the wise. So looking forward to using this thing.

    thank you for this video. I am trying to figure out if this is going to work for me, or will i just be more frustrated that it "almost does what I need it to"...if that makes sense? And a totally different question: The music in your background...do you know the name of it? I have heard it on another channel and I would love to know the name/group playing it. thank you.

      It’s really not difficult to remove the machine from the carriage. There are clamps that prevent it from shifting on the carriage and your power cord, that’s it. Yeah, a little bit of a haste, but not bad. It all depends on what you want to do.

    I want to update my prior comments so people will know. I have had a lot of trouble getting the Cutie. It is on sale right now for $689 til the end of April, 2021. It is back ordered. Some places will order it for you, some won't, some won't honor the sale. One place tried to charge me $1100. As for a ruler table, the Sew Steady company , when I called, said it won't make a custom ruler base for any long arms or mid arms for you to put on your machine on the Cutie, even tho Sew Steady, Allbrands, and Grace Frames did a video together, emphasizing that you could get a ruler base to use on your Cutie. However, some stores say you CAN get one. So now I have ordered my Cutie but don't know if I can get a ruler base for my Tiara. So be careful about that. My husband may have to make me a little ruler base of wood, altho I am sure no sewing machine company would recommend that. He is handy, so I am sure he can. I hope this helps someone else.

      Another update. I had ordered the Cutie from Sewing Parts Online. They honored the sale. As of today, July 9th, I still don't have it. It is backordered and must be very popular. However, this worked in my favor because as I looked longingly at the Grace Frame website today, I saw that they are having a Christmas in July sale. I was going to get the legs for the Cutie, so I would have the option of raising it up, to quilt while standing. I also was looking at the higher handle accessory, because it looks more comfortable. I had been saving up a little money. Then I realized that by the time I buy the legs, and perhaps the different handle accessory, I would be spending almost as much as for the Q Zone Frame on sale. So I cancelled the Cutie and ordered the Q Zone, which is larger, comes with the legs, comes with the higher handles, and has more options. That is not backordered and I should get it before long. It is still a reasonable size, 54 inches wide. I am excited and the people at the store graciously took care of me. So if you are looking for a Cutie, or the Q Zone frame, or a new machine, check out the sale!! It is a good one. I hope someone can save money from my comment. Also, I think they are having another sale in Oct.

    What is the largest size quilt you can do on this?

    • @FogDogStudios
      @FogDogStudios  2 роки тому +1

      The Largest I have done so far is 84 x 84 but I have a king 100x100 waiting for me to figure out how I want to quilt it. Because it is a hoop frame, you are not held back by length or width, you just shift it around to make it work. I just recently uploaded a video where I was working on the 84 x 84 quilt. It will give you a little bit of an idea how I work with the larger quilts. Here is the link. ua-cam.com/video/eBP2PSjRXKk/v-deo.html

    I am looking at this frame for myself. I have a really bad, screwed together neck. Even tho I have a sit down midarm, I find pushing the quilt around hard on my neck. This frame is on sale all over the place until the end of April, so I am thinking about snagging one. Do you really think it is easier on your upper body? Thanks so much for the video, cause now I can show my husband exactly what it is. How do you know if your machine will fit in it?

    • @FogDogStudios
      @FogDogStudios  3 роки тому

      I am so sorry to hear about your neck. Gosh, over all it is a lot easier to quilt, but setting up the quilt and moving the quilt around may still be an issue. The Grace Company Cutie Frame page lists the specs for the size of machine that will fit. Just scroll dow to the section on "Will My Machine Work?"
      I have upgraded from my Juki TL 2010Q to the Grace Company Q'nique 19 for the actual quiltable space. The Juki has a 9" throat and the Q'nique 19 has a 19" throat. Quiltable space is around 3" less on either machine. Good Luck!

    Does your machine have to have a stitch regulator. I have a Babylock Jazz

    • @FogDogStudios
      @FogDogStudios  3 роки тому +2

      No. It does not have to have a stitch regulator. It does make it easier in that you do not need a foot pedal. Grace Company has a stitch regulator that connects to the machine with buttons that velcro on to the handlebars. You could check with them to see if that is available for the Jazz. I have this for my Juki 2010Q. Although I upgraded to the Qnique19 for more throat space.

    I have the Juki TL2000Qi and wondering how in the world do I reach my foot pedal, how to place it? I feel like a dummy

    • @FogDogStudios
      @FogDogStudios  2 роки тому

      I upgraded to the stitch regulator for that exact reason. I used it for about a week before I upgraded my machine to the Qnique 19. The stitch regulator plugs into the foot pedal port and you have buttons that attach to the handlebars. HUGE difference. I had heard that there is a foot pedal extension cable, I never looked into it though.

    What’s the minimum size tabletop? I can leave the frame out all the time but I’d like to use the smallest table possible.

    • @FogDogStudios
      @FogDogStudios  2 роки тому +2

      Mine is sitting on a 30”x 60” table top. You could go a bit smaller, 25”x 55”. I would hesitate on anything smaller than that. I have mine set up on 2 IKEA Kallax shelving units back to back so I have lots of storage below. You definitely want something solid or you will get a bit of machine bounce when sewing a bit faster. I hope that makes sense.
