Welcome back to Crying In My Car, a podcast for teachers! Join our hosts Devin Siebold and James Yon as they ask the question, what are these older teachers' problems with the new guys? We also have a secret technique that teachers can use to destroy the competition on field day. Finally how did a couple of teachers just get cheated out of 2,000 bucks just because the school board didn't send out an email?
We all hope for a warm reception whenever we start a new job, unfortunately not all veteran teachers are as welcoming to new teachers as others. We’ve had plenty of experience with this, but luckily they're not all bad stories, for every crotchety educator there is an obi wan esque teacher ready to share their lessons and stories. However, it's more funny to talk about the former rather than the latter right?
We all know about field day right? We look forward to it every year, and let us tell you what, those kids aren't ready for the competition. Devin shares a hilarious story on how he used underhanded tactics to sweep the competition. Tune in to find out exactly how he did it and maybe you can use it in your next field day.
Now us teachers don’t get enough credit and sometimes we really need some good news. Well one school district gave a whopping 2,000 dollar bonus to any teachers who returned to their classroom in the fall! Which is awesome news, however they neglected to let anyone know, therefore taking away any initiative to actually come back in the fall. We don't know about you but we feel like writing an email would have been a pretty decent idea to make this initiative work.

My parents used the early release days to make a little extra cash. We have a van that can hold a lot of people, and because my parent only have to pick me and my brother up. They would tell people that they could pick up there child up for a small fee, and a lot of people said yes! They were able to make about $50-$70 a WEEK!!

Not a teacher, but cursive was a life saver for me. I get writer's cramps often and cursive allows me to write far more before it kicks in. The cramps normally occur after a few sentences of print but I can write several paragraphs in cursive before needing a break.

Lame teachers made field a single day instead of the whole year and view it as “a disruption to the learning” and think they need to corral the kids. Let. kids. Run.

Best field day i remember was like 6th grade. The school legitimately paid a DJ to set up a Karaoke booth. For like an hour lots of kids including me looked over the book of songs that were available and no one went with it. And then this kid named Richie Lyons got up there and he smoked Headstrong by Trapt. I watched the whole thing. After his performance everyone was laughing at him and he took a stance and looked them all in the face and said "well at least i wasn't scared to try it" Ive been taking my shots everytime since then. That kid inspired me

For our school they just had separate stations and if you wanted to do that activity you would wait in line. Made it so the teachers only had to worry about their event and not corralling the kids.

The most preps I've ever had was 9. I teach a world language, so I have a guaranteed 4 prep minimum (level 1, 2, 3, AP). I also have a World History class to round out my schedule. When I first started at my current school, they offered a language major so the students were able to take a language class AND a culture class (level 1 = culture and geography, level 2 = Japanese history, level 3 = Japanese literature, level 4 = Japanese government and economics). Creating the culture classes was tough, but they ended up being a lot of fun (once they were put together). Now I just have the 4 levels and World History, so I have a regular 5 prep schedule. I can't imagine only having 1 subject to prepare for!!!

So when I taught in Thailand, most schools had a Sports Day- which I assumed would be like Field Day. Absolutely 100% not the case- for the most part teachers were not involved and it was run entirely by the students. The best way I could describe it was like a condensed version of the Olympics opening and closing ceremonies with basketball, soccer, volleyball and table tennis- the students were split into teams and if you weren't participating in a sport you could be part of the cheer squad or just sit and watch from the stands (and get a day off going to class). One year that I went, for some reason (never addressed, no one on the faculty knew) they had a couple of students just randomly dressed in inflatable T-Rex costumes for the opening skit- but they still had to go to morning assembly and no one on the faculty could stop chuckling seeing them listening to announcements dressed as dinosaurs 🤣
