Crying In My Car Podcast with Devin Siebold: Presented By Bored Teachers
    --
Welcome aboard "Crying In My Car," the podcast where the classroom meets comedy, and chaos. I'm your host Devin Siebold, joined by my hilarious cohort, James Yon.
We're diving into the gritty realities of the physical and mental toll of teaching. It's a journey of laughter, stress balls, and finding those glimmers of hope and purpose amidst lesson plans and late-night grading.
Then hold onto your hall passes, because we've got some of the most outrageous stories you've ever heard. From a history teacher with some, 'creative' self-scanning techniques to a substitute teacher whose pants-down approach landed him in hot water.
And for our TikTok enthusiasts, we’ve got a tale that turned a classroom dream into a viral reality. Not to mention the public school teacher who stirred up controversy with religious music lessons.
We also delve into the struggles of taking father's leave in the teaching world - because sometimes, working from home doesn't mean taking a break.
And if you’ve ever thought about switching teaching gigs, we've got some strategies that might just be your golden ticket.
So whether you're a teacher, an educator, or just a lover of all things unexpectedly hilarious, "Crying In My Car" is your go-to podcast. Join us, Devin, James, and James Yon as we explore the wild, weird, and wonderful world of teachers.

In the spring of 2020, while teaching online (lockdown, remember?) I had a student who absolutely did no work in my Intro Computer Science class along with his other classes according to guidance. He failed that quarter, ergo he failed the semester. At the end of June during the unpaid faculty hiatus I found out that I had to create lesson plans for him to do over the summer. I was not told of this during the paid school year because his guidance counselor forgot to tell me. I did it, graded all his work as he finished each piece (computer science, like mathematics, is cumulative), and was never paid for all that. To add insult to injury, I was told by the principal that I was unprofessional without being told what I did that was unprofessional. I retired in June of 2021. In January 2023 I was asked by the new principal if I would come back to teach algebra classes for the second semester; my answer was no.

I saw you on the BT tour last night. I’m the 60-yr-old teacher that walked up afterwards, grabbed a hug, and told you “Crying in my Car is my jam. I love the stories.”
The show was fine. The stand-up comedy format of all of your speech just doesn’t appeal to me as much as this show. I love how you guys just talk, chat, tell stories, laugh together.
So thank you for keeping this up! I truly enjoy this format and your story and news telling and discussion. Just know I’m laughing, groaning, be shocked, and laughing again with you!

Mentally occupying your mind, at all times.. That, was what burned me out.. I taught myself how to compartmentalize.. and now it takes me a moment to remember what happened at work today. I walk out the school and I'm free, mentally and emotionally. Can recommend doing that self teaching work!! Great episode!

When I went on maternity leave I had a parent email me while I was in the hospital mad that I wasn't allowing her son to do a project that was overdue. I was not there! I also had to go in and do my end of the year paper and report cards 2 weeks after having a baby.

I teach high school math. We're not allowed to give an F. Students get incompletes and have until November 15th the next school year to make up work and retake tests. We're also not allowed to give anything less than 50% on anything, even if the student never does the work or test.

Correction: it should have read for about 31 years of my career I loved my job- the last 2 years that was not the case because of all the time that I spent that I did not get paid for.

Thinking people aren’t just being polite when they “oooooh” in their disappointment when they’ve handed you a real present and you handed them a piece of paper that is a tax write off (for you).

The donation was made in their name entirely, tax donation included. It was all theirs. Also, they didn’t get me a gift. But yes, I see your point most people would expect physical gifts.

I took a new job one year for a teacher who left suddenly in the first month of the school year. One student did not turn in a single assignment all year long. But I was told I had to pass her. I told them I could not pass her because I had literally NOTHING to give her a grade on. They told me that if she turned anything at all, I HAD to pass her with at least 60%. She handed in a paper with some words written on it in third grade script (she was a seventh grader). She was THRILLED with her D. I decided I had to move on.

I would like you to do an episode where you feature all the various platforms (exact path for example) that are aligned to standards but often don't meet the needs of students and teachers. These platforms are money makers for these companies.

I low key hate that school is all about getting kids ready for the work force instead of learning, discovering, and getting excited about being part of life in general. I also hate that a lot of the apathy is they see adults in their lives doing the "right things" and never getting ahead, so what does it really matter if you conform or not, you're never going to succeed either either way.

Very true. Creating a passion for learning should be priority.
