Welcome back to Crying In My Car, a podcast for teachers! This week, Devin Siebold and James Yon break down the "cringe" some people throw teachers who are active on social media, share a wild story of a plane door falling from the sky (was a teacher involved?), and how a film class teacher provided her students with life-altering experiences.
Devin and James know a few "TikTok teachers" and they all seem to have different reactions from school admin - some great, some harsh. Devin shares some advice on how to overcome these obstacles if you ever face strong reactions.
To end things with a bang our hosts share praise for a thoughtful teacher who offered her students a role in her documentary by giving them some hands on experience through a broadcasting internship. Paid internship? You've got to listen in to see!

Regarding your spoof text: The dead giveaway would’ve been “kindly.” No CEO would use that word

Hi Devin! Not all of us “boomers” are idiots! At 69 years old, I have not been scammed and try to stay up with the latest tools to stop spoofing, scamming, phishing, etc.

Virginia Beach VA has no school on Election Day.

Striking on election day isn't gonna be useful in Michigan, at least. We use a lot of schools as polling places. Can't keep a polling place secure, so those days involve the students staying home and the teachers doing professional development.

25:25 I do not think you should compare our schools to China. They might let their kids nap but they give them an insane amount of homework and the parents sign their kids up for WAY more extracurriculars than we do. I recommend “The China Show” to get the real insight from two people who used to live in China.

100%! They need the naps because they are at school a lot longer than in N America, and then have other lessons and homework until late in the night. Not something I’d like to aspire to.

You miss the point. They do that because they value education as a vehicle for social mobility. They hold education sacred. Maybe we don’t need to do the exact same, but we REALLY should learn from them. We literally cannot afford to ignore them because a huge portion of our kids are so far below where they need to be in service of individuality and self expression.

@@waleedkhalid7486 They have a high suicide rate due to all the pressure they put on their children. There are now a high percentage of students graduating from college who can’t get jobs. I follow Chinese news.

I love your content BUT as soon as you say the word boomer my heart falls to the floor. I am 61 and VERY tech savy and I DO NOT get DUPPED! I think people generalize about age WAY too much. It is not the first time you have used that term in a negative way. You also have assumed people of my age are not tech savvy. Computers have been around for a LONG time. It is individual and not generational. I don't want to be judged by my age or generation. Apologies for the vent but is is discouraging the way you and others describe older people and tech!!!!!!

Personal experience, I have a Facebook inbox full of older people replying endlessly to “suggested” messages they see on my page. Almost one a day falls victim to it. They message and argue with themselves for 5-10 messages and don’t know they aren’t talking to anyone. Then get mad at me even though it’s a Fbook thing I can’t control and it clearly says “suggested messages to send”. I am not saying all… but a lot from my experience aren’t entirely tech savvy.

It's not about how long certain technology has been around; its about the bad actors that know the few steps beyond their targets. You target a certain demographic with a goal and understand the percentage that will pass and fail. It is way too easy to grab protected information in person and online.

@@Macee8Hearts yes BUT that is true for ALL age groups!!!!
