Welcome back to Crying in my Car, a podcast for teachers! Join our hosts Devin Siebold and James Yon where we ask the annual question: they’re tossin’ caps, but are they ready for what comes next? From finding the quad to how to sign up for the right classes, we explore what it means to get ready for college.
Can teachers survive senioritis? Between early alarms, a lack of interest from students, and demanding admin, it's no wonder that the last stretch takes a lot out of you.
By the way… is school starting too early or are we getting older? It definitely doesn’t align with adolescent science. A snooze button on the morning bell could be the MVP of academia. Asking for a friend….

I have been letting my son, who is currently 7, been ordering his own food since he was 6. It really helps kids learn social skills for sure!

My son missed A LOT of school this year due to other kids being sick in the classroom. They threaten repeating the grade, but parents need to know their rights. Parents have final say regarding being held back. I'm a teacher and a parent, can't play me. All the best!

My kids doctor has a sick waiting room and a well waiting room. So if you’re sick you wait in the sick waiting room.
But since covid you’re also supposed to wait in the car and then call them to let them know you’re there and then walk into the waiting room

This episode was so timely for me because I have one in college and a Jr. My son is taking one dual enrollment class this year and three next year. I agree that learning a trade or getting a certificate is great in HS. It can even help the kids who DO want to go to college but want to make good money while paying their way through college.

There might be HIPAA issues with school covered insurance for children in school vs adult covered insurance for college students. I’m not saying it’s impossible, but parents would need to sign off on PHI or be with the child for any medical appointments on school property.

Considering what is going on in education at the moment I am stunned that you are able to put a positive spin on graduation and college. You are so wrong when you say, "there is always a reward system to life." Some people do all the supposed right things and don't succeed while others do the wrong thing and get rewarded. This is truly misguided. One thing I NEVER hear you discuss is old fashioned getting out there -- taking your lumps and going it alone and succeeding in business as an entrepreneur. There is greatness in not going the "typical way." I am not talking about trade schools. School says there is a path -- sometimes creating your own has its rewards. Also, getting out there and failing is magical too because success grows from that too! Thank you for listening!

I went to Flagler in the 1970’s. I remember the food being pretty good.

So, allowing parents getting the kids at specific time is also cause there’s not enough staff. The front office staff is now being utilized to help with dismissal. There’s no one to check out the kids safely.

The duel enrollment program at our school is not good and they don’t prepare you for college at all. Most of the kids drop out of college that did duel enrollment. I wish it would have been better

Right on the money, a lot of parents don’t care. For attendance to be taken serious parents need to be held accountable. Parents know post Covid all they have to do is complain to district people and it will all go away. My opinion after 15 undecided days, parents should have to sign an attendance contract and their kid can’t attend school until it is signed. Five more days missed you are dropped, and need to reenroll your child elsewhere. Love the state of teaching episodes!
