I feel a little bad for him.
I don't think people would understand if ken suddenly admitted he was lip syncing and miming guitar. it's gone on for too long at this point. lol
I don’t know Ken, but comes up on my feed. Just personally for me his voice isn’t that great for him to boast about. I remember seeing him the first time and wondered who this guy is that sounds like he thinks he can mimic any artist. Even sound better. Where I don’t see it. What I DO see is an over exaggerated voice presentation and a tongue in his mouth that seems to not fit in its place correctly, and a facial expression looks like he’s in pain.
Studio One is amazing.
Let s put it this way , maybe Atmos will bring new form of imagining music , like synth bring electro techno music . New tech evolution brings news form of art. We need to switch paradigm
I agree. Even I would love to at least explore with my own music. But I don't need all my music that way. A nice "treat" in real Atmos. But once it becomes the norm, we will be deaf to it soon.

I love watching reaction videos because I like to find new music or I like to see if people love the same songs as I do. I cannot sing. I am sure I am toneless, thus I listen with awe and envy. The ability to convey an emotion through voice is amazing. I listen to music in languages I don't understand to get lost in feeling the music, the emotion. So with that said, I have watched Fil and Ken among other vocal coaches, musical artists and just people who enjoy music. What I noticed about Ken was that he could not be completely enthused. He could not just enjoy. There was something you said in this video about having an interesting voice verses having a four octave range and I agree. Tone, musical choices, space, emphasis--this creates a work of art. Ken listening to Laura Fabian just made me a little angry. Won't listen to him again because of it. Smugness is not inviting.
Thank you so much for your insightful comment, friend!
My take, for what it’s worth, is like yours: no big deal about performing to comped takes… certainly no big deal about using blended backing tracks live- times 10 when you’re over 60 yrs old. But Ken got caught, and, instead of just going with it and informing his audience about the realities of live performance and stagecraft, etc., he got defensive as a corporate brand. We see this too often with YT drama-the accusations start to swirl about “grifting for views,” as if Wings of Pegasus needs Ken Templin to catch views. That’s where Templin went wrong. Templin should just come clean, and continue-he can keep his vocal school and business. But ego gets in the way. SAD!
Good point!
Already waiting for the next one. I finally received my acoustic insulation yesterday from Rockwool, similar to Owens corning. Hoping they are stiff enough to only use fabric, no woods, as I saw in a video on a different channel using Owens corning. It will be so much faster to get it all in place. My temporary room is so small that I went with 3cm and 4,5 cm thick. Will double them at the most important places and leave a gap between them and the wall. Bass traps in the corners will also be thinner than they should, but I´ll leave some open space behind. It'll have to do. I've had worse rooms and made good vocal recordings so I think it'll work fine for my needs.
Sounds great (literally)! I'm sure it will be a vast improvement. They might not stand too well on their own, especially the thinner ones but there are some wall brackets that just claw into the Rockwool and hold it in place- The corners might need to find a solution to get them to stay put, but I'm sure you will work it out! I'm setting up for the next video which I will shoot tomorrow. It may be redundant for you, but perhaps at least entertaining. I am showing how DAWs work by using an analog console so people who are new to this can more easily understand signal flow, terminologies and all the things that all DAWs share in common.
@@devon-graves-studio-D Yes, I saw these wall brackets as well in said video. Will try to find them here and mount them on little wooden squares to get the gap from the wall. I always find something new and useful in your videos, or stuff I knew and slightly forgot about and needed repeated. I know a lot about signal flow, but somehow I always have problems with it. (But it´s because I'm doomed. Hard drives dying, recorded vocals disappearing, weird errors and bugs. I´m a magnet for it all. Hahaha)
25:47 One hundred percent! I have a theory, from personal experience about mimicking and\or impressions of another singer. When I was a kid I was obsessed with Fiona Apple, I heard Criminal and it over lol. I was a life long fan. My mom hired a professional teacher with a degree to classically train me...for well over half of my life, then on top of Violin, Cello and Piano. Fiona was my favorite so I was desperate for piano lessons but it wasn't available in my school so she didn't want to put anything else on at this point (early grade school) I was around 6 maybe 7 when Tidal came out but I lived and breathed her from very young, purposefully getting my voice as low and smokey silk smooth as hers. I did it well then, come puberty time, I nailed it without trying. I believe that if a child begins with a favorite singer, practicing constantly... Their vouce grows into it. If you dont start early then its going to be more difficult to do. Again, this is my crazy mind 😂😂 through my personal life experience. 😅 I know it sounds nuts 😂 its ok to laigh at me about it, i do lmfao 🤣
Hey Whispering Echo! Thank you for your insight. I am honored you commented because I left a comment on your terrifying video and psycho analysis of Kenl I was blown away the way you took hi8m apart on a psychological level. I see there is another comment from you so I will end here and see that else you have to say. Anyway, I loved YOUR video!
I love your background! I like how you started this off too, very unbiased! Not being petty, theres plenty of people that make videos just bc its a trend or the like, then you have us. Coming from a specific spot, with vaild reasons, bringing science and technology aka PROOF. I kept coming back to this because I love your meticulous elucidation! Much love ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥💯
Wow, thank you SO much! I truly am honored hearing this from you. You made my day, truly❤
I saw a picture of a mastering engineer in his mastering room the other day. I don't recall who it was but I was surprised at what the room looked like. It looked pretty live but the corners were about 3 feet behind the speakers where only the bottom 2 feet of it looked like it was bass trapped. The rest look like a typical room corner.
Maybe there is more than meets the eye to that room. Maybe not. It is arguable when once you are on that level, you just know what you nare doing and what you are hearing. But us mere mortals aught to remove as many challenges as we can. Thanks for your comment, friend!
I used Rockwool to build my 17 panels
Yes, that works well. Is it rigid compressed?
At my 45yo, I decided to pursue and learn engineering and recording, old school-meets-modern style... Just to record my band, help some friends and produce my own music. Just have a really humble small room. As soon as I started to install my DIY panels (with a similar logic you're exposing here), I immediately noticed the difference in sound. I use budget Presonus monitors and I'm getting better and better results just by trial, experiment, error, and learning... It can be done. We just have to listen to the ones in the know. Thank you so much Devon for your advice. Loved you on the Ayreon stuff, been checking all your work. THAN YOU from a Venezuelan lost in Ecuador. Oh, and this is not a boring stage, it was SO MUCH FUN to build it myself!
Hey Kevin, sounds great. Your presonus monitors will do the trick for sure, especially if you know how they sound and translate. All I would suggest is to upgrade those before you throw money at other gear. Thanks for the Ayreon Compliment! I have become best friends with Eric Clayton through that record.
His video description reads like it's written by a child. Also he's so focused on being animated while performing that absolutely everything he does is out of sync with the backing track.
Nobody acts like that when they are really recording.
I would add dont despair glass, of course consider and treat for reflections, but I am pretty sure glass leaks bass like a mofo, so that helps.
Good point!
Ahh right off the bat.. he has terrible technique. Straining his voice.

What inspired you to move to Austria?
Love. and the even greater power, The almighty power of illusion :)
@@devon-graves-studio-D Ohhh, you´re here in Europe? I thought you were based across the mighty Atlantic. Do you get Owens Corning in Austria? My Rockwool ones are made for acoustic treatment, called "lydplater" or "sound-boards"
@@andsoitis2010 In Europe there is an equivalent called Isover... It's actually what I use but I cant seem to find it anymore. www.hornbach.at/p/isover-akustic-ssp-2-5-1250x600x50mm/3563448/ but I dont know if it's the rigid stuff.
@@devon-graves-studio-D I wish they sold Isover here in Norway, it looks sturdy.
I'm almost afraid to ask but here goes.... What in hell does Ken do with his tongue when he sings? A lot of the time it's sticking up like the water monster's tentacles in Lord of the Rings. I find it very, very unnerving and not at all nice to watch. Years ago, while watching one of his vids I thought if that thing bursts through my screen and grabs me around the ankle I'll be less than happy.
A good room is hard to find, I have a very small room. Definitely not ideal but I get decent results with some workarounds. Great video 👍🏼
Just do your best with what you have. As long as the room is not a disaster (and it doesn't have to be) the music mattrs the most :)
Ken has a Fabergé Ego. He sits there and criticizes singers like Freedie Mercury, Ian Gillian, etc etc and then sings their parts off key and horribly. He's also obsessed with the high singers of the 1980s and refuses to move on.
Some good thoughts. I agree - in a vast majority of cases having the Mains as close to the Front Wall as possible will make things easier to treat or EQ. This helps mitigate Speaker Boundary Interference Response (SBIR) most smoothly, and pushes those anomalies further up in the Listening Position's frequency response, which is FAR easier to treat with Absorption, EQ, etc. Eventually, as affordability increases, many will find that even smaller rooms can achieve better response in the Lows at the Listening Position with the concept of Dipolar Sub Arrays (two in front, two behind in antiphase - trimmed with micro-delay to shift the Axial Modal Null at the LP) as described by Dr. Geddes and others. This will mean that the Mains can have their Crossover set higher, letting the Subs carry a more purposeful, room correctable burden in the Lows.
Interesting stuff Bill, Thank you for the information! Much appreciated, friend!
@@devon-graves-studio-D - You're very welcome! And thanks for putting out such a welcome and well-informed series of videos! :)
Totally agree with you Devon. Such a marketing stunt... "Let's find a new way to squeeze extra money from the creators and consumers for a worse overall experience."
How to connect it to an Apollo interface? I want to use the talkback feature on the C24
You can send the talkback to a headphone amp. The stereo L-R outs can go into the 1/4" "Alt Monitor" inputs. But honestly, unless you want to work in 5.1 I would bypass all the audio section of the C/24 and use a separate monitor controller. The Mackie Big Knob (Not the little passive version) is far better. More headphone outs, talkback and its way louder.
Puddles (from PDX!) is PRICELESS, right? Your plugging Puddles is PRICELESS! You, Pal... ...are a PRINCE 😎 for the exceptionally even handed manner with which you walked the web we're seeing woven. ...listened to your bands. You've got the Nu-Metal thing DOWN. ...at our age! Nice comment across thge board. I am in Austria actually. But if your ever near Vienna let me know and we'll have that drink!
Devon, Puddles looks like you with a clean shave and some white makeup. Puddles is an amazing vocalist. Darrel Hall is a master of backing off the mike and turning his head a bit to the side for dramatic effect, then sometimes bringing it back to center. Uses it like a fader to add more soul to the sound. Not being critical, but the lighting on one side of your face in this video, is a little distracting to me.
I think Puddles looks a bit like Jim Carrey. Darell Hall is one of the best vocalists ever. He grew up trained since he was in a high chair. Critique noted. Thanks for your comment friend!
Ken has an underlying narcissism. A man his age with long hair, dyed, and flips around. He really loves and needs attention.
3:22 I used to re-record a whole vocal line when I was a little bit of at a certain point and I can hear it. I don't have perfect pitch, but I can hear when something's even the slightest semi-tone off, but then, back in 2016, I read an interview with Mike Oldfield and he's talking about his album Return To Ommadawn, in which he explained he wanted to go back to the 70's in his mind after he's been quantising; etc everything since the early 2000's and he also used a lot of programmed drums and synthesizers (plugin) and just used to stock presets for most of his works back then. When he made Return To Ommdawn, he still used his Pro Tools HD-X system, but treated it like if it were a 24 track tape machine. He played every instrument by hand again, as he did on Tubular Bells and Ommdawn, for example and even left in some breathiing noises he made while playing the acoustic guitar. "It's part of the performace/emotion" he said. He also said that he didn't care about stuff being slightly out of tune anymore. He did back when he re-recorded Tubular Bells in it's entirety back in 2003 and even though I like both of these versions, the original TB blows the 2003 out of the water (for me!). So, RTO has even got some noise left in at places, which Oldfield said he could've easily get rid of. Also some squeels are left in; etc; etc; etc. He did use plugins (Hammond, Solina, Farfisa, ARP 2600) instead of the real machines, but he played it all by hand. No editing, no quantising, no nothing and I did have to get used to it, but man... that album's easily on my Top 5 Oldfield albums list. Maybe Amarok's better? I don't know. A completely different animal. Anyway, so long stry short: since I read that interview, I don't care about being just slightly off while singing or playing whatever instrument. Okay, of course I'll rerecord anything that's WAY off, but luckily, that usually doesn't happen to me very much. :) If you've never heard Return To Ommadawn before, Devon.... listen to it at least twice, haha. Cheers ps. Sorry for the book. This always happens to me. I start typing and I can't stop and I type way faster than I think I am. :P Back to the video and if I spot something of interest I wanna talk about, I'll try to keep it short, hahaha
Interesting stuff. Actually, I have nothing against instrument plug-ins, synths, orchestral, even piano which I use all the time. They are far better than the Roland and Korg machines we used back in the day (maybe analog synths are better, maybe not) I don't have a real piano in my room, but VSTs are all still played by hand. so it's fine with me. Real drums are very important to me though. Namly a real drummer. Unless it is stylistically appropriate for the genre, rock and metal live and die by their drummers.
Love the studio you have. Excellent lighting!
Thank you Colby!
I didn't know you were gonna pull Puddles out! Lolololol Still don't think Ken is no talent, but great choice.
Thanks for the cool comment friend!
Puddles singing along with "Postmodern Jukebox" SIMPLY AWESOME !!
Major Puddles fan here. Newly unsubscribed unfan of Kenny...
and newly subscribed FAN of Devon!
Thank you Karsten!
If Ken would have just come clean all of this would have died instantly. His pride is the real issue here. He has been telling people that you don't lose vocal ability with age if you follow his course and that is just flat false. I remember doing a guitar seminar with Tommy Tedesco, a legendary studio guitar player and he was the most humble guy you could ever meet. He listened to us all play and even though I felt like an imbecile compared to him, he was kind and gracious with everyone. RIP man.
This video definatelly has the most juice for me as it says the story behind aome of my favourite albums
Very informative! Valuable suggestions. Thank you Devon!
Mr Tamplin does seem to have a rather high opinion of himself. Puddles is a good singer, singing a weird song very weirdly.
Puddles Pity Party! I recently played Puddles (I've always assumed the clown is Puddles, since no one else consistently appears with him) for my 93 year old mother (I played his "Sounds of Silence" cover) and she loved him! I detest heavy metal and as a result am a little cool on his endless heavy metal covers, but he does enough non-metal stuff (like this cover of the Pixies) for me to find plenty to like. Because I can't tolerate heavy metal I find Ken Tamplin's voice to be rather absurd. Interesting perhaps in the same way as the couple of women who recorded all of the movie screams that continue to be used 90 years after they were first recorded. But I find him insufferable in addition to be utterly uninteresting musically. Whereas Puddles in his signing strives to give every note, every word, every word it's due. I've not seen a video to date of Ken that DIDN'T sound mimed. He is also intensely unlikable, especially when he implies that FIL (whose videos I've been watching for years and years, all the way back to when ALL he did was do analysis of superb guitar playing, like Rory Gallagher or James Burton or Glen Campbell (who may be either the greatest singing great guitarist or greatest guitar playing great vocalist ever). Fil always struck me first and foremost as a fan of great music. Lately he has been focusing more on great singing than great guitar, especially doing software analysis of songs to determine how many songs today use autotune or other editing devices. He is furious - and I completely agree - that nearly all contemporary music is "cleaned up" using software. So you can do an analysis of TIm Buckley legendary performance of "Song of the Siren" on THE MONKEES TV show, to see what such a great performance looks like through the software, and then compares it to an autotuned song. Even fine singers today like Kelly Clarkson and Taylor Swift are being autotuned because of the music industry's obsession with tweaking music to a degree that only a random bat flying by could detect. BTW, I do not know that Fil has done a Tim Buckley analysis. If he did, he would make the point that we don't get to hear great, unadorned voices like we did in the past with people like Tim Buckley (or son Jeff) and Frank Sinatra or Shirley Bassey and Judy Garland, because if any of those guys were still around the studio would run their recordings through all that software before they release it. And even if it is a "live" recording, they still will "correct" the raw performance. The software paradoxically makes their music "perfect" while leaving it less interesting. Anyway, I'm delighted you chose Puddles to prove your point.
Hey, thank you for such a great comment! I'm glad you included Jeff Buckley along with his father. I am in complete agreement with every word. I really loved Fil's recent video on Caren Carpenter.
Mr graves i am so happy to have just found out of your chanel . I am a producer and musician my self huge fan of your work. Can we have a live Haze One please?
Hey! Thanks forn your request. I would have to puzzle that one out but I can try :)
Thanks for all the years of pure quality and art ! Now that I think of it maybe haze one isn’t that easy for an acoustic version… thanks a lot for your answer I can’t believe I am actually talking to you !
I'm sure that Ken is a decent vocal coach, but he must realize that not everyone is Steve Perry...
Atmos is cool and all, but also very exclusive and disruptive for producers and listeners, who do not want or cannot afford its implementation. So why aren't we all boycotting this nonsense?
Something I neglectd to mention even on my recent video on the topic, but those who will be hit hardest are mastering engineers. The is no mastering nstage in Atmos. No stereo bus. I think most of us are boycotting by default. Nobody is buying Atmos home systems that I know of.
@devon-graves-studio-D you're absolutely right, I didn't think of that.Thanks
🗣️🎙️Proverbs 27:2 👍
What’s it mean if I think both Ken and Puddles are lip syncing. Puddles just knows how to make it more convincing.
Could be. But there are moments where I am absolutely convinced Puddles is singing live. Also times where It's obviously not the case. The difference is, Puddles isn't selling himself as a coach who is in fact singing live, on the spot to prove his ability as a coach. Puddles is pure entertainment. Ken is lying and this is why he is being called out.
Love this man I'm digging this song love the music and style man pretty melody rocks man
Thank you so very much! I really appreciate that Cade!
Your very welcome my pleasure buddy
Sorry had to go at puddles ...
I understand. He can be a bit much, especially at first glance. But what I dig about him besides his singing, is his acting... kinda depressed and hopeless. I first saw him singing Holy Diver with Primus and I didn't know how to feel about a clown rocking out, singing nearly exactly like Dio. My son said he should have been making balloon animals during the guitar solo and I laughed my ass off. But I searched deeper and found a really moving version of War Pigs. It was more of a music video where he sat at a piano and obviously lip sync'd. But the clown thing finally came through and it was quite dark actually. I showed him to my friend, Eric Clayton and he really dug him as well and did his own deep dive. I appreciate you watching thus far friend:)
How's this ...... I love music , I've never Heard of the guy . He's done what ???........ So he's a multi millionaire do to his " greatness ??? I don't know but I'm leaning to No. The man has cognitive dissonance in regards to Fil's analyses of his work .
My studio uses a Protools 10HD / Digidesign 192 16 analog input rig. Power Mac Quadcore OS10. Mix in the box. The rig came out of studio that produced platinum albums back in the day, sooooo... good enough for us :-) #IndebasementRecords
