One of the reason bleach was always my favorite is because its closer to urban fantasy. Some semi regular dude. He can see ghost but no big deal suddenly gain super natural abilities and now he has to grapple with that. That's exactly why Ichigo (and Yuji since he follows in his footsteps as a character so much) is my favorite shonen main character. He does not have a big overarching dream, he isn't an idealist, he isn't trying to change the world, he's just a good guy who wants to protect his friends and family and gets constantly dragged through the dirt for it, and even if he will be crushed by depression at some point or another, he'll eventually rise back up because despite being not fully human, he's the epitome of the human spirit and determination

There are a few times where Ichigo actually enjoys fighting. If I'm not mistaken, during his first fight with Renji he gets super excited, and you can tell that he basically can't stop smiling, like he's amped up on adrenaline. That aspect of him seems to completely disappear though, which I always found a bit odd, but I suppose he was forced to mature rather quickly. If he kept that bit of attitude, then more people might've remembered that he's still a kid.

About the white ichigo part, it was clearly stated that no matter the approach he had with Ichigo, he would be feared by him, and they probably didn't had the time to set things straight, so he had to make sure Ichigo was strong enough to be able to be used by him properly, so relying on survival instinct alone was surprisingly effective, people can do incredible things when they're cornered while in fear.

The only people I give a pass for not explaining things to Ichigo is Zangetsu, both White and the Old Man. That's just their nature as embodiments of his inner self and power. They physically could not explain things he did not grasp himself. Shinigami have to go through this kind of self discovery to learn how to wield their swords. We see Kenpachi have some similar stuff happen. Everybody else in the series though, fuck them. Ichigo is out here struggling with being half hollow while Urahara is just not mentioning that that one time he helped seal a powerful hollow in Ichigo's mom to save her life. Nobody tells Ichigo that oh yeah, he has some quincy blood until Evil Jesus shows up and beats the shit out of him. Isshin is his dad, knows all of this, and tells him nothing about this stuff until he literally can't hide it any longer. Honestly, in Bleach it felt like the villains were the only people willing to explain anything to Ichigo about himself.

Alright, I'd probably say Kariya or Kiritsugu from Fate/Zero, but those answers have been said. So let's dwell on another character who's life actually got better: Brook from One Piece. Why Brook? He had to leave his captain behind and fight his way through the Grand Line without him. He then had to watch as his entire crew died before him, and then of course he died. Then he wandered as a disembodied soul for an entire year only to come back to his now fleshless skeleton. Now this is the worst part: He was stuck by himself on a ship he couldn't steer accompanied only by the bodies of his fallen comrades for 50 years. You can't even try to imagine it because most of us here haven't even been alive that long. The only thing keeping him sane that long was a promise made to a comrade that may have died or given up on him at any point in that time. Of course, things got infinitely better for him, so he's not likely to get recognition in a thread like this.

I will always argue, from the moment Ichigo was droppedcin that hole, till the day Zangetsu was reforged with a proper Asaucchi, he wasn't a shinigami, he was an arrancar... Which actually makes his whole predicament worse because not only was he barely coherently taught, he wasn't even being taught to be the correct thing. Hell we see this in his fight wity Byakuya, who recognises that tensa Zangetsu isn't a Bankai due to its characteristics, but he alao hasn't seen an arrancar so he doesn't have the context or terminology to recognise what ichigi is. But also, there's the fact that we see that white had the capability to take out Byakuya, and that the method of moving was so unlike7😊

I love how this video dives into Ichigo’s constant struggle-a character who never asked to be a hero, yet constantly thrown into conflict. What makes Ichigo so unique compared to other shonen protagonists is his lack of grand ambition-he’s just trying to protect his friends and live a normal life. The series does a brilliant job of making you feel his exhaustion, his isolation, and how unfair it all is. Yet, it’s that very struggle that makes his triumphs so much more rewarding. People that prefered Bleach when it was airing were probably more mature or intelligent people. Bleach got shit on by One Piece and Naruto fans, and even new anime fans from the recent years for no valid reason. It's either people that didn't watch Bleach, or people that watched it but they watched it like they watched Naruto and expected every information to be spoonfed to them. Bleach's thematic isn"t the more fun one compared to ninjas and pirates, so people coming just for the fights missed half the show by not trying to understand it.

Ichigo's life is like if Dark Souls 1 didn't have the Undead Asylum, and instead just dropped the player straight into Firelink Shrine and told them to figure shit out from there lol

I just love Ichigo as the MC. My fav line of his got to be about brother born first to protect his little siblings. I wish my brother or older sibling would feel that way also.

Besides, Ichigo still thinks that his mother's death was his fault, even though Isshin said it wasn't his fault and that he would never blame him, but that's still inside him, besides that it must have exploded inside his mind when he faced Gin. "I can't save my friends, my family once again (Isshin fallen there in the rubble)." And speaking of White, why does he say that he doesn't want to lose Ichigo, because he is his king, when he loses his power and recovers, you don't see White anymore, maybe he's there and Ichigo can't hear him. That's why Blade is Me is perfect, because it heals all his pain, that it wasn't his fault that Masaki died, he accepts everything White and Yhwach, and with that his mindset becomes more mature.

I found my people

Theres actually a reason why white is so cryptic as well. Ichigo despises hollows b/c of Grand Fisher. Omce he finds out he has hollow powers he rejects them and pretends White isnt apart of him b/c he hates that he is a creture he despises. This is why he tells Ulquiorra to cut iff his limbs, and why he tore his mask off against Byakuya. Hes trying to reject this part of himself he hates. B/c of this White is a lot more bashit and angry, b/c thats how Ichigo feels about himself, angry. White is literally Ichigo "The blade is me" its a relection of Ichigo hating himself. After his battle w/ Ulquiorra his hollow mask what supposed have the horns and everything, but b/c he feared his powers only a partial mask came out and once again Ichigo and White were at different levels and he lost himself to despair. It wasnt until Ichigo learned the truth about his mother and came to terms with that day he was finally able to accept white and become a whole person. Its why we see white so calm and smiling down upon Ichigo b/c theyre now on the same wavelength and Ichigo no longer hates himself for causing his mother to die by a hollow. He was going through all of these mental stresses as a teenager. A lot of people rag on him for not using more attacks or learning Kido, like give the dude a break 😅. He only had his powers for a year and hadnt even got the basics or reaitsu control, Zanjutsu, or even his own emotions, you really expect him to learn a more complex version if a "magic" system that takes decades to learn and master and he already has trouble w/ b/c hes fighting "gods" on 1 years experience? Ichigos got the stress of a man working a12 hour job 7 days a week 💀
