Superb review. Thank you. Really enjoyed the side by side comparison's. I thought this was agreat value. I paid $205 US dollars. I have all the studio LP's both from this set and the Camel Productions era. The upgrade in sound is significant to my ears. I think the bonus tracks/demo's, live material and the 5.1 discs make this a no brainer purchase. The book is beautiful as well... just my two cents.

Thanks for the kind words on the video! I thought the book was beautiful, although it did annoy me a bit that the text & photos were the same as in the booklets for the individual CD releases from a decade ago.

Interesting views on the remixed albums. Having listened to them all in my copy of the box set my feelings are that the new mixes of the first two albums, Camel and Mirage, are more “in your face” that is to say a tad harsher as well as louder. The volume increase alone can be deceptive when compared to the original mixes in my opinion. What I did object to was, in a few places, the addition of some extra delay and worse, some flanging most noticeable on the drums. I get the feeling these effects were not on the original recordings but were added to the new mixes… my question is why bother doing that? In conclusion, as a big Camel fan, I have to say I am delighted with the entire box set…I will, however, be sticking to playing the original album mixes!

great review of a great box by a great band. You really did your homework on the comparisons, you dont see that kind of depth much with other reviewers!! 😊 I love the 5.1 mixes!!

Thanks! I'm looking forward to getting the box, especially for *Snow Goose* because that one has never "come alive" for me, either on my old Passport LP or the UMG CD special edition. Something is sometimes lost when an album is mixed onto 1/2" stereo tape & Steven Tayler's remix of the BeBop Deluxe albums certainly gave them a richer, more immediate sound much like what I heard on your sample from *Nude* . I'm assuming the remixed discs here were the ones where the multitracks still exist. I'd say no remix of *Stationary Traveler* was needed anyway (LP or CD it has always sounded exceptional), but it would have been groovy to hear it in 5.1 surround!

great video, well spoken and I liked the pacing of it with the commentary and then the examples. Although not part of this set, I'm curious, what do you think of the re-recorded version of Snow Goose? That's actually the one which I discovered first so naturally I gravitate towards that, since it also has a more modern sound.

Thanks for the thoughts on the video! I did enjoy the re-recorded Snow Goose but honestly don't remember feeling like there was an enormous difference. I'm interested now to go back and compare in more detail though.

I liked the newer Goose pretty well, but I miss David Bedford's orchestration. *Harbor of Tears* is my favorite of their later CDs (great sounding too) & I was fortunate to see them play it live here in California.

So far only listened to Mirage remix in full and I think the remix of Mirage is miles ahead to the original compared with the remaster. My only complain would be the compression on some of the remixes. But luckily it is mostly not so severe.

Camel 🐫 is a firm favourite of mine, however i already have the remastered album's plus many great versions on live concert releases so at the price they are asking and the sonic improvements so slight i'm giving this one a miss . I sincerely hope that someone will purchase this set ,well worth it if they haven't already got the back catalogue

I think you also have to take in to account that many buyers will not have the quality music systems that will allow you to appreciate these remixes, remastering etc

There is only one reason they are remixing these albums- the multichannel mix. If they weren't doing that, they would just go with the old mixes and spiff them up with new remastering. The stereo remix is probably just a two channel fold down of the multichannel mix. They give it to you in case you don't have a multichannel system, but that isn't the reason they're remixing. Multichannel mixes are a whole new thing compared to the old mix. 5.1 is to stereo as stereo is to mono. You should be reviewing the multichannel mixes, not the stereo ones. It's clear that they started by recreating the original stereo mix, then they split that up into surround channels. Folded back down to stereo, the differences are minor and mostly involve the reverbs and EQ of individual elements, particularly the vocals.

seems some sonic improvements but at £182 the box set is too expensive even though that equates to £.5.68 per c.d (32 c.ds in the boxset). To plough through all that material requires dedication and extensive time which, for me, is not an enticing thought. There seems to be a propensity for record companies to overload these boxsets with unnecessary material often duplicating with endless live recordings, demos and alternative takes. Another example is Caravan's 'Who Do You' which contains 37 c.ds. A friend purchased this boxset and he admits it became a 'job' to plough through all this material of which he stated 90% will not be heard again. I believe these record companies are attempting to monetarise as much as possible as, i suspect, this business model has a very finite time before the upcoming generation who are, in general, more persuaded into listening to favoured tracks and less inclined to invest in albums as sales in recent decades confirm.

I have all the albums remastered, the difference isn't enough for me to pay so much for this set. I have the music so would sooner pay for new music. It's for the big dedicated fan, am I one of those? Well I've seen them four times during Moonmadness, Rain Dances, Nude and once later on around early 2008-12, can't remember the year at Birmingham Town Hall UK and as said got all the albums so, do I need this. No. Does any Camel fan need this, questionable.
I'd like the surround sound but only a few of the albums are done, so it's still no.
It's just far too expensive for so much duplication that won't ever get played more than once, even that.

I picked up a copy of this. I was on the fence initially but I succumbed into getting it. I was really curious on the 5.1 mixes plus the live material. I'm very glad that I got it now. This set is beautiful and sounds fantastic. I cannot recommend it enough to a Camel fan. To me this is the be all end all of the sets. I do not find this set to be overwhelming to listen to really. I can see myself coming back to many of these discs again and again.

@@stuartraybould6433 It is costly (I have Amazon credits!) & I will probably never play all the CDs. I'm sure I'll play the BR surround sound discs quite a few times, though. If you follow the folks at SuperDeluxeEdition, they have issued some solo BR surround discs at about $35USD each, so this set is competitive for just those 5. Also, I was never happy with several of the original recordings, so stereo remixes are quite welcome. But, yeah, it's overkill.

obviously you guys dont listen to the 5.1 surround mixes. these are worth the price of this box alone!
