Trips and tips for saving money on hard up hiking & broke backpacking as well as plein air art videos from my various hikes and camping. The Ceremonial Smashing Of The Ramekins
Apologies for the lack of updates, and this isn't the content you are looking for *hand wave*- as I deal with the funeral (which was last week) and clearing the flat, probate, wills etc. It's been hard to get back to my life, and my work here.
For background, my partner of 27 years, John died just over 5 weeks ago. Here's a video about that: ua-cam.com/video/Eu8_UgqF-I0/v-deo.html
I promised John I'd do this along with throwing away his napkin notes when he was alive.
(The rest of them are on Freecycle/Trash Nothing btw, I thought smashing them all was a bit wasteful, but these are the cracked/grotty ones, I did want to smash more but I made my point)
It was very cathartic after all those years of being banned from throwing away even the smallest useless pot. I HATE ramekins. They are the hangers or empty boxes of the cooking world. Or indeed John had a penchant for keeping expired pens in his Bags and Boxes of Crap. WHY?
I guess this is part of my grieving process - smashing crockery and thowing away napkins with endless lists of words on them?
Well I have a lot of the latter...

Stealth and Wild Camping Hiking UA-cam is full of cliches and tropes - and so we listed them all - or did we? If you think of more please respond in the comments! Wild Camping On Leith Hill and Walking the Greensand Way

Wild camping on the Highest Hill In Surrey? You bet - but I need to get there first...lost in the Surrey Hills, in the dark, will I make it hiking the Greensand Way from Dorking to Leith Hill. Also includes return of the artwork (I did some artwork in the Scottish series coming up but it wasn't time-lapsed as I had no tripod) with a painting of the 18th Century folly Leith Hill Tower, which als...
Epic fail: Midges interrupt Peak District collab

Back to the Peak District wild camping with a bunch of UA-camrs like I did last Feb - but this time, millions of midges wanted some UA-cam shine as well! And it chucked it down. So it went rather wrong, some of us got rather drunk....I blame the tequila and the whisky! Four of us rescheduled to a location near Baddesley Ensor for a more chilled camp where I got to play on the swings and see-saw...

I have a new tent - the Naturehike Cloud Up 2P, a free-standing tent! So I test pitch it in a local park (on camera for the first time! Limited instructions....I live dangerously), then go test it properly with a wild camp on Winey Hill, by the Chessington World of Adventures (where I did the last Live video from). The tent is great, and as always bought with my OWN money, this is nothing to do...
Thames Path 14: Nearly drowned at Clifton Hampden

The final part of Thames Spring, the Thames Path Sea to Source walk from Yantlet near All Hallows-on-Sea, ending up at the bridge at Clifton Hampden. 170 miles! Cold, wet, flooded out, and nearly drowned it got too dangerous to keep going as the water got deeper and deeper...and as I said, although it's Easter Sunday, I'm not Jesus, I can't walk on water. Starting in a cold frozen flooded field...

Day 13 of the Thames Path Sea to Source hike from Yantlet to Kemble, and floods and frozen tents are starting to be a major problem. As well as dodging or wading the deep floods at Goring, Streatley, Moulsford, Cholsey, Shillingford and many more, I visit the castle at Wallingford, explore not one but two Brunel railway bridges at Gatehampton and Moulsford, hack through some hawthorns (hawthorn...

Also a surprise motorbike parade in Purley-on-Thames, musings at Mapledurham Lock, some amazing scenery and some amazingly deep mud at Pangbourne, got some chee...

Just curious how come the carbon steel pan pot pans arent popular in the camping world?
weight mostly. For car camping etc it's fine, for hiking, nope cos carbon steel is too heavy and cast iron is too fragile as well.
I use the previous pump and the zero and never had an issue. I kinda like that it stays in and you can do other things while it's inflating. There's always bad batch for sure but I used mine so many times without issues. Thanks for sharing.
I think your Lighttour is punctured. Others are right, inflate it and put it in the bathtub to check.
I also have this R5.8 and it is in good condition.
The thing that bothers me about the aluminum pans is the pfas coatings. Titanium burns quick, but stainless is heavier
I like Titanium because Titanium is cool. I cook in a Tomshoo plate in my kitchen and it works for mostly any preparation.
To be honest I have seen quite a few UA-camrs say it's no good , fast but now powerful enough and issues with it stopping working
❤
What about the issue with aluminium leaching into your food which is poisonous? Is this aluminium pot coated with something?
A methylated spirits bottle,just perfect
Interesting. Not actually thought of this.
Yes, Trangia gear is expensive but with reasonable care it will literally last you a lifetime.
The zero pump feels like a gimmick for ultra light people. The tiny pump 2x is way better. It pumps to a higher pressure rating, and it has a light. It is a much better device overall. Saying that, I would like to try the max pump 3
The bio ethanol should have a bitter agent in them so you will notice, that is not for consumption unless you use everclear
You really deserve more views. Prayer goes out to the algorithm
Al has 10x the thermal conductivity of Ti, it also 60% lower density. If you can care for and not be rough on your cookware, Al is by far the cheaper and better cooking choice.
If you use cling film around the threads of the top of the bottle where the screw cap screws on it will seal it without leakage,
Good tip!
Mine works v well. Top up with 3 lungfuls, and saves 20 lungfuls .
Glad it works for you. I find it's best taking the air out of vacuum bags....not exactly the best use.
Stainless steel and heat management. Doc
Yes, I think alu or stainless is the way to go. Heat management can be fun with alcohol stoves but I have a simmer ring now.
The reason a lot of race bikes use titanium exhausts, they're extremely light & cold to the touch in seconds after the engine is turned off.
Our loved ones never truly leave, they forever live on within us.
Maybe I could ask for rent? ;-)
Methylated Spirit is available in 250ml bottles. = Solved for that quantity. New Thermo Scientific 125ml Nalgene Narrow Mouth Bottle HDPE, Screw Cap, pk/9 £6 eBay, leak proof = another volume covered, but bought not from recycling. All the best with the search.
i want my £1.25 back ! no camping pon the hill you neak !!!
m8 do u even camp?
Just had a quick look - loadsa places for Trangia 300m bottle delivered to your door for £14. They are bomb proof I never have to worry about splits, cracks, leaks, and I get a very mesured pour. For shoter trips those smal or 100m or 200ml Nalgene bottles. But for ultimate peace of mind - Trangia.
£14 for a 300ml bottle is still very pricey - given that actually a mouthwash bottle will do just fine.
fruitgums have always been my fav while out cycling or walking.. once could find them in nice boxes but alas no longer in Yorkshire.
Yes, I used to love Rowntree Fruit Gums til they changed the formula from harder gums to that current horrible mushy sticky texture. So I switched to Midget Gems (has to be Maynards, the other clones/generics aren't as good, yes i have tried them all) and wine gums. In South Africa I came across fruit gums like that, firmer. You can still get ones that type - Haribo do Roulettes, which are like a cross of wine gums and the fruit gums of old.
Titanium cookware is like carbon steel knives. They are only great for certain things and you should know how to take care of it.
Yup, boiling water, really. Tried cooking in Ti pots on both gas and alcohol stoves now, and the results are the same.,,,it just burns and sticks to the pot!
thats a really nice hammer (i collect hammers, which is a bit odd)
I think that might be John's hammer... We ended up with two when we merged flats
I am 70 years old, an expat living in the USA, I always missed owning a Warrington Hammer, I couldn't find one in the US, after 25 years I now own one, the perfect hammer for panel pins. I treasure the feel of it in my hand, brings me me back to my youth back in the UK.
Gotta do what you gotta do ❤ keep going your doing well by the looks of it 😊
Not sure I'm doing well...it's been a rollercoaster of massive proportions, even the most minor thing sets me off. But thanks.
Hello Tim, good to see you back on the airwaves. I have a similar problem with plastic takeaway containers....I used them till they crack or turn orange. Why not smash one on each camp? All the best, mate👍🏻
I could...if no-one takes them, seemingly no-one wants them on Trash Nothing anyway!
@@harduphiker I remember going into a charity shop in Richmond, North Yorkshire. There was an entire shelf dedicated to all those Güd chocolate pudding ramekins. You always use them to make your own candles?
@@Thats_him_with_the_daft_hat yes it was a lot of Gud ones, and some weirdly bought ones...and a lot more....
All the best Tim good to see you back on your channel 👍
Thanks :-)
This may be the first time I ever heard the term ramekins..... Every day is a school day 😊 Good to see a video of course 👍🫡
THEY ARE EVIL. More evil that slugs probably
@harduphiker not even possible 😬
@@AnIdiotOutdoors Admittedly a ramekin hasn't snuck into my tent...YET.
@@harduphiker There's always time 🤪🫡
Doing what you said and need to do is important. Well done 👏
It felt important for the grieving process,
Better late than never. My apologies Tim
Wow thanks - you didn't need to do that. Very appreciated though...
Great stuff fellas, very true . Some stuff needs to be said.. been at this a long time now and you have nailed a lot of stereotypical outdoors folk so called influencers ..
Thank you!
I ordered a bunch of cheap metal alcohol flasks on Amazon and I use those. 2-3 will fit perfectly in a small Molle pouch
I use aluminum cups, pans and pots…just as light, cheaper… if you are a person who takes care of your equipment, then the durability part won’t matter because you already take good care ….
Very true.
Thanks
Thank you!
sorry for your loss bud
Thank you.
I just got a half decent small none stick frying pan and small pot and removed the handle then got a pan gripper, light and thin just means lots of burn and welded to the pan food.
Exactly.
I know aluminium is bad for you and recently read that titanium is also bad for you. You cannot beat stainless steel for durability and it will not leach heavy, harmful metals into your food.
Sadly some people have zinc and chromium allergies. You can't win either way (btw aluminium isn't that bad for you, it naturally occurs, and Ti Oxide stops Ti from poisoning you but yes, everything is bad in too large amounts).
3:32 Hello Tim, just popped in to see if you're alright.👋🏻 I have a generic version (knock off) version of that twig stove. I like it but it as you said, it can be a bit of a dingo's kidney to get going. Especially id you're fuel is even slightly damp. I have a bit of a fetish for stoves. I like my alcohol hand gel fuel too much...... because its cheap.
Could be better but was out camping this weekend...then came back to a council tax demand in John's name, seems local government didn't get the memo 😞
@@harduphiker Glad to hear you're getting out and about. Typical Local authority, I'm afraid.
Hello, what a beautiful video. You paid a great tribute to your partner, who was clearly a very special man. As for the future, I believe it always manages to sort itself out. Take care, Paul.
I hope so. And thanks.
I have an aluminum six inch pot and a coated frypan I got from trangia. I like alcohol for cooking so far. I've made pancakes already with the simmer ring. Everyone just boils these bags of freeze dried food. Not my thing.
@@fire7side yes I love alcohol stoves!
I have started eyeing the 8oz Ensure nutritional drink bottles here recently. Those bottles seem to be made of pretty heavy-duty plastic and have a nice fitting cap on them and since I drink one of the nutritional drinks everyday I would have plenty of them to use. I am always looking for cost effective stuff to repurpose to save money if it will do the job I need it to do.
Those look like a nice size and heavy duty.
So sorry to hear about your loss Tim! Hope you are ok mate.
Thank you...not OK, not sure I'll ever be OK.
Horses never used to be worried about them but camped on a hill one night and little did i know but a couple of horses grazed in the field , inside the shelter and i heard THUD!! right next to me , was a horses hoof stamping the ground just inches away from me , every time i moved in the tent it startled the horse and THUD !! was so worried id get trampled on if i tried to get out of the tent.. was the longest 20 mins of my life that waiting for the horses to move a bit so i could get out of the tent. had to just leave everything and go back in the morning for it all.
Yeah I camped accidentally in a field with horses on my Chessington camp...it was OK, but they are pretty blind and they freaked out when I appeared out of nowhere from my green tent...
I tried to cook an egg in titanium at home after getting a Snow Peak set. Egg burned terribly and pot was very very difficult to clean. I learned the limitations of titanium there that it works for boiling water and that's about it.
Yes it's really water and not much else. Even going back to it earlier this year I was surprised how bad it was at cooking even slowly on an alcohol stove.
Hi , only just started following you yesterday , watched a lot of your south downs way videos last night and they are really excellent. That out of the way I wanted to say that Black/White Straight/LGBT we all know how loss feels like , its universal. Doesn't matter what a person is or isn't it stings all the same. I don't want to make this about me but as a trans person id just like to say that if people leave your channel because of your sexuality its their loss not yours. the only thing i can offer is love and support for this most difficult of times for you no words are ever enough xx ❤
Thank you, and welcome. I think we need more visibility and to honour John I will do that going forward...as you say, those who have an issue it's their problem, not mine.
@@harduphiker You're most welcome ♥
