Critiquing my own Greenland Kayak Rolls - Forward Finishing Roll
I am critiquing my own Greenland Kayak Rolls - Forward Finishing Roll. I record all my Greenland kayak rolling sessions not just for UA-cam videos, but also for me to review my technique and to look for areas of improvement. It also helps that I have friends that can also watch it and share their thoughts and insights.
In this video, I am using the Rebel Greenland T, Gearlab Deck Po Pro to record my videos, and East Pole Paddles.

Going by some of the comments I've seen here, it seems the Pakayak is not suitable for rougher waters or long journeys, more of a recreational boat. Are any of these portable kayaks good for other than flat waters?

Good try! Took me over a year to figure this out, without anyone's guidance. Key thing is to keep the paddle close to your body at all times. As it has been mentioned before, your top hand should be close to your forehead and hold the paddle aligned with your body during the pry, so that it forms an extension of your torso. When prying, use your core muscle and bow downwards while holding the paddle firmly close to your body. It should be more effective than using your arms to push body away from the paddle to lift your head out of the water. During recovery, keep the paddle in water, perpendicular to your kayak and smartly swing your body forward towards the deck.

I loved the idea of the inflatable kayak (as seen in picture) due to it comes in a bag and can go in a car easy, I use it to surf waves included and at sea in Maine sometimes. I challenge it haha. Anyway, I would say that if the shore is not near car. Wheel the bag right to the spot, put it together and then leave the bag in the car. That’s the optimal way to carry it around. When you come back, you go get bag out of car and take it apart and travel again.

Concerning the hydration drinking tube, I use Magnet Tube Clip by USWE to secure it. Two magnets, one mounts on tube, the other on wherever you like (mine is on my PFD). I adjust mine so that I can just drop the tube from my mouth and it falls down and grabs the magnet. With this deck pod, you would do that by hand in a location of your choosing. FWIW! 😊

obvious mistake wrong position of the hands. 1. top hand - keep ALWAYS during almost all the movement back of top hand to your forehead. in contact. 2. bottom hand - stretch down. straight hand. you should form triangle - straight bottom hand away from the body, paddle from the bottom hand to forehead and your body. and move with this triangle during sweep, then break it during pry. best explanation in this video: ua-cam.com/video/pQnmwLeJkAQ/v-deo.html

I like your energy! Always refreshing to see progress with a smile. One tip to get you going easier with the forward finishing, reverse sweep roll: think body, not paddle. You have a good setup but your body finishes in the middle of the cockpit and to do that you have to push hard on the paddle. Instead you should almost touch your head in front of the cockpit when coming up! That way you take the strain off your shoulder and you can keep rolling for many years to come ;) As a bonus along the journey you may find the throwing stick and hand rolls to be easier to master because you learned rolls are more body than blade. Good luck whatever you do!

Thanks for this comparison! It does get me close to regretting grabbing the Pakayak because compared to true sea kayaks, I find that the Pakayak seriously suffers due to how much water it seems to 'smash' rather than 'slice'. It feels like I need to work twice as hard as I would in a sea kayak because of it, and even just going 5kmph on gentle water starts to make it spray the deck. On the other hand, it only takes a few minutes to set up, and being able to get into and out of the water easily is THE major selling point of the Pakayak for me.

Wow!! I'm impressed Chad 👍👍. What a progression with your new and "real" kayak. Keep practising and you are going to be better than me at the end of the year. Next step is to do the rolls on both sides. Also practise balance brace and sculling, that will help you a lot. Congratulations! 👏

Thanks Jonas! Like you suggested, I think I’ll stick with these three rolls and learn to roll from the other side first before moving on to more :)

Awesome job buddy, you hit it out of the park, some bloody good rolls and great to see you're trying out different techniques. You should have a go at the no paddle roll (can't remember the correct name) But let go of the paddle and just use your hips and legs. Something I learned 20 years ago and before you ask NO I can't do it anymore (to many injuries + old man now lol) Great video and a lovely looking kayak.

Thank you! I can’t imagine rolling without a paddle.. something I will aim for down the track!

@@Fishaholicboy to be honest it's not too hard it's just timing and momentum. As soon as you start to roll use your hips and thighs and push yourself to keep going. Now I don't know if it's possible in a sea kayak as I learned to do it in a smaller boat about 8 feet if memory serves. But I don't see why not contacting a sea kayak is not as wide. If you do try it can't wait to see the video 👍

The kayak definitely helped! Having tried a few different kayaks to roll, this one is by far the easiest to roll

the difference is probably in the paddle. Unless that surfski is longer or narrower or both.

I was not used to the narrower surski.. was quite the challenge. I tried it again recently and it was definitely better.

I would have bought the Trak 2, but my butt didn't fit on the seat. I have been sitting on the plastic left and right of the seat. Eventually I have bought the Pakayak Bluefin 142. I have no problems paddling long distances and my butt fits on the seat. Always test a kayak before you buy it. And don't buy it if it doesn't fit. For example I would not have bought the first Pakayak, the Bluefin 14, as the cockpit has not supported persons taller than 1,7 m.

Oh I didn’t realise the first Pakayak had a shorter cockpit. Definitely should try all kayaks before buying if possible!
