Welcome to my Channel with lots of happenings around my little home workshop. I spend alot of time fixing things which sucks because it stops me from what I enjoy doing, making things. When I do get the chance to make things it’s usually to expand the capabilities of my existing machinery. Why have 3 machines when with a little bit of imagination you can have one machine to do 3 different jobs, this is especially so when money and space is tight. Down the track I'll get my foundry up and going again but greatly scaled back from where it was a couple of years ago.

Beautiful job!
Looks good.
Great video. Nice work mister. I need to do something with my lathe.
This sort of content upsets me! I have workshop full of machines but do not have 1% of your inspiration and I do absolutly nothing in it Very Nice!
Great result Cam
👍👍👍👍👍
2 ways of putting holes in felt: A flet punch (yes it really is a thing) or soak it in water, freeze it, drill it... Notching wasn't really an option on mine :-)
Providing it is actually Wool Laser is an option too.
Excellent. Cheers Rob
Nice work Cam. Cheers Rob
Thanks for the rigidiser tip Cam. I have some liquid rigidiser given to me by a viewer which I have yet to try with thermal blanket. Apparently it is simply sprayed on with a squirt bottle. Yet to be tried. Cheers Rob
Nice job Cam, my Dean Smith & Grace had aluminum way covers but Bronze looks much better.
They look great! I must get myself one of those pneumatic chamfer tools. Regards, Preso
Gday Cam, that’s a perfect result I’d say, fantastic job mate, cheers
Good job Cam . Cheers 👍
Show us how
Very Admirable Cam. I have to say after knowing you at work, I'm glad you shared this with me thankyou. I now understand why you are so spot on and full of knowledge. Love the vid and wish you well. Sooo humble mate. Full Respect. Excellent on all fronts👍👍
Gday Cam, nothing worse then a bloody rattle, I’d say it’s more the roads in Vic that course this, cheers
G'day Matty, yep it has been on my nerves for years. Finally got around to doing something about it. Was expecting one of the door locking rods knocking on the body but found the loose anchor. On another note, do you know what happened to Pete from PGS? I remember you donated a lathe to him, the last videos he did were rebuilding his shed. Cam
@ Gday Cam, I was only thinking about Peter a month or so ago, I’m not sure what’s happened there mate, I think I still have his number somewhere, I’ll let you know if I can get on to him…
Thanks Matty, I hope he is OK, let him know a few of us are thinking of him Cam
Really good technique for the epoxy. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Cam, I have a 2016 Nov MUX up here in Philippines. Just added a support bracket to the aircon low pressure hose which goes from compressor to evaporator on firewall. They vibrate being a diesel engine and the aluminum tube at the evaporator is prone to work hardening and fracturing. Dashboard out and install new evap. I fitted a clamp around the tube and fixed it to the plenum, negating the vibration. Also there have been instances of mechanic leaning on hose adjusting valve clearances snapping aluminum tube. 2023 and up dmax and MUX have the bracket. There are posts on oz isuzu forum about this issue.
Hi Willem, the ISUZU's seem quite popular in the Philippines, I think they are actually made in either the Philippines or Thailand . It is a rock solid Ute and I've had no issues other than a pressure sensor on the fuel rail failing and a leak from the rear axle inner seal leaking. Yep vibration is a real issue with the Diesels, the 3 litre unit is their small truck Diesel engine and sounds like one to but it is very reliable. I do all the oil and filter change outs every 10,000 K's and give the Uni Joints a squirt of grease at the same time, all up around $160 AU for the service. I have been quoted around $600 per service but for the 2 Hrs once every 6 - 8 months I'm happy to do it myself. Cam
Good work. We shared this video on our homemade tool forum last week 😎
Well done Cam, after 20 years, and getting back into the heavy casting work, would not be easy. You are also doing great work on bettering your machines to make them easier to use.
Cam could you please tell me the brand and model VFD you have running your lathe? Thanks, Graham
It's a Folinn Brand 5.5Kw Single Phase to 3 Phase, check out the details here - cononmotor.com.au/product/5-5kw7-hp-25a-240v-ac-single-phase-variable-frequency-drive-inverter-vsd-vfd-2/
Nice castings, Cam. I envy your copious supply of bronze stock. My supply is reminiscent of hens teeth or honoured political policies. Regards, Preso
@@Preso58 nice to see we all hang around the same parts of the internet 😉
Hi Mark, yes I was lucky to get all these offcuts and a very very good price. Mind you the Engineering works I bought them off did the bulk of the machine builds I designed in my previous working life so I think they looked after me. Cam
👍👍👍👍👍
Hi Cam, the price of Phosphor Bronze is so expensive these days, good alternative to cast your own from scrap. The bronze way wipers on the Victor lathe will certainly look nice. Back in my refinery days watching them relining our cat cracker with refractory was pure art.
very nice cam, good to see a video from you again. Also nice to see a casting video where the people are not doing stuff that makes you think that they have serious suicidal tendencies... Castings look great, and Ive always heard that phosphor bronze was one of the worst to cast with due to how much it wants to absorb gasses and end up with porousity, plus I didnt think it was supposed to fume like that. It may be a different phosphor bronze alloy than Ive seen before tho.
Hi Chirp, thanks for looking in, yes my videos are getting rather sparse, mainly due to work commitments and family time. Yes this Phosphor Bronze always smokes as soon as it starts to melt hence the need to get it up to pouring temperature as soon as possible. If it spends a lot of time in a melted state the phosphorus burns off. I've had no issues with gassing other than the odd micro bubble that you saw in the video and it is very fluid when it pours. I'd imagine its winter over your way so not much casting going on, we had 43 Deg C the other day and the day I poured it was up into the 30's. Probably a bit to hot for me to cast in but I wanted to get it done so I can get the Slotting machine back together with the new bearing. Cam
we all make rookie mistakes... even me 🤣
Yep, we certainly do Peter and it probably won't be my last. Cam
I really admire your furnace Cam. I too make too many old man noises when I need to bend down low and lift heavy stuff. Your split furnace is a godsend. I need to make one of these. I'll see if I can study it a bit in the video. The over centre mechanism is what I need to understand. The lid is similar to what I have worked with, but also appears to be able to be lifted via pedal. Nice castings. And your hollow bar casting certainly surprised me that it turned out. I kept thinking it was going to leak. Done this enough times to know that you got really lucky there. Mark
G'Day Mark, yes I'm turning 64 this year so all the years of abuse are certainly catching up on me. It was over 16Kg's of metal and it is sometimes a little awkward to get the crucible out of the Furnace if the riser gets stuck to the bottom. If you would like some very rough sketches and photos of the Furnace mechanism let me know and I can e-mail them to you. Cam
Fantastic work. Thanks for the excellent explanation throughout.
No worries Jimbo, thank you for looking in. Cam
I think that you could do with something that is more substantial than long nose pliers, whether it be a set of cheapo blacksmith tongs, or a bug set of water pump pliers, but I prefer the tongs in preference. Great video!
G'day, I do have a number of Blacksmithing Tongs around but do you think I could find them. They are probably over at my mates house (who I used to run the Foundry with) but he is away on holidays. I just grabbed what I could find. I will slowly get better organized as I do more melts. Cam
Nice results. your mature exhalations when moving the crucible souinded very similar to mine. Made me laugh in sympathy.
Hi John, yes I'm turning 64 this year so all the years of abuse are certainly catching up on me. It was over 16Kg's of metal and it is sometimes a little awkward to get the crucible out of the Furnace if the riser gets stuck to the bottom
A bit of a tour of that furnace would be nice. Looks like a very clever design.
Me too, very interested in the design, great job!
Hi Paul, I'll do a quick video of the Furnace and post for you guys to see. Cam
@@theonlybuzz1969 Will do. Cam
It's been a long spell since I last did any metal casting. Probably more than 20 years. Must feel good to be casting again.
Hi Paul, when I packed up my foundry I swore I'd never do any casting again, I guess never say never. Anything I do now will be on a much smaller backyard scale (its the way I started) and only when I feel like it. Cam
Your Kbond sand looks completely different to mine. Did you add coal dust to it? I always thought it was red. Regards, Preso
Hi Mark, yep it is Kbond (starts of cream in color) that has been well seasoned and used over time, it has turned black so no coal dust added. Check out the Kbond recipe here - www.afsinc.org/sites/default/files/inline-files/k-bond%20sand.pdf It was developed by the Kent State University to make a Petrobond type sand but at a much reduced cost, check out the article here - wiki.opensourceecology.org/wiki/Definitive_Article_on_K-Bond. I got a bag of the Bentone from a speciality paint producer in Melbourne arond 30 - 35 years ago (cost a bomb to buy) and have been using Kbond ever since for the finer casting work. I have tried to get more of it recently but can only buy it in large bulker bags. However I have now got a supply of the "Red Oxide" Petrobond at a very reasonable price. You can purchase it here in various quantities along with any other supplies from a foundry supply business in Melbourne. The guy is fantastic to deal with - www.greensand.com.au/ Cam
@@camatbattler2233 Cam, I was sent the raw bentone and the catalyst to make my own K-Bond by one of my YT viewers. I was able to make around 25kg of the stuff. Mine is quite red in colour but it is going darker as I use it. I still find it kind of funny to use. It seems to be a lot fluffier and it rams quite differently to my greensand. Maybe I need to add more IPA when I mull it. Regards, Mark
G'Day Mark, yes the Kbond certainly holds its body and is quite different to ram up. Put it into the Muller and add a small amount of 2 stroke oil. Allow to mix and add the IPA until your happy with the feel. You will find that you don't need to add any additional Kbond for quite some time. Was the Kbond red in color, this is the color of Petrobond due to the red oxide thats added in?
What type of clay is used in your petrobond/kbond? Bentonite? Have you ever used portland cement mixed with 2 stroke motor oil as a casting "sand"? I've tried it as a backyard casting hobbyist, and it gave a really nice surface finish with aluminum. Thanks.
G'day Steelcap, check out the Kbond recipe here. - www.afsinc.org/sites/default/files/inline-files/k-bond%20sand.pdf It was developed by the Kent State University as a cheaper alternative to Petrobond. Check out this article - wiki.opensourceecology.org/wiki/Definitive_Article_on_K-Bond Cam
The Frytol tin took me back to the '70s, my family kept horses and we used those for mixing feed, and for water. In those days the fish and chip shops were keen to get rid of them.
G'Day Geaser, I got dozens of these tins over time from my local Chicken Star shop. Sometimes bought a family meal there and noticed them in the back of the shop. Asked if I could have a couple and was told take as many as you want cause they only get thrown out. Cam
Hi Cam, hope all is running swell at Viva, I’m guessing your foundry was in Melbourne? Enjoy watching the casting of anything metal, never had to do it though. So yes I watch those Pakistani vids on the tube a lot. I’m retired now after the big turnaround 2023, and enjoying life. I have 2 locos I’m building in my little workshop in Geelong West, 7 1/4 & 5” gauge. I’ve caught up but still not making boilers yet. Your vids are excellent, keep up the great content.
G'Day Rob, yep still at Viva and still looking after the Jetty, coming up to 10 Years in June. My foundry was in Leather St out in Breakwater. Myself and my mate Ian ran it as a part time business but it was almost full time given how many hours we spent there, we did Aluminium, Bronze and Cast Iron. My Father built a 31/2" gauge Evening Star which was a 9F Class. He was well on the way to completing a 71/4" Victorian H class and a three cylinder version of an R class with Baker Valve Gear. If you need a boiler built my brother designs, fabricates and organizes the inspections and all certs for Loco Boilers both in steel and Duplex Stainless Steel. His quality is second to none and every inspector who has looked at the many boilers he has fabricated (Australia wide) all comment that they are the best they have seen. He currently has a Heidi, a NSW 38, and a Black Five with a tapered boiler on the go. Cam
Hi Rob, regarding the boilers I make that Cameron replied to you about. If you would like to discuss anything about this, give us a shout out. Also, Cameron has a couple of clips showing him machining some of the Duplex Boiler Barrels and fixtures for me. Cheers Andrew
I can see from the comments below, Pete doesnt have a channel (he should), but does he have a website or is he on any forums? 🤞🤞 I do have that issue of MEW, has he contributed articles to later issues? I'll have to google 'electronic leadscrew'. Wish we could see that engine project he's doing. Great video.
G'Day DDB168, unfortunately Pete hasn't got a Web Site or UA-cam Channel. He is very private and I was lucky to be able to film just a fraction of what he gets into. Some of the stuff he does would blow your mind. Cam

G'Day Matt, yep he is a very good mate and has pulled me out of a few sticky situations when I was running my own Design Business. G'Day Mark, that's just the tip of the iceberg to what Pete does. He built a working replica of the very first Desk Top Computer which I think was operated by push buttons down to building the retro crystal/cats whisker detector radio sets. He's shy on the programming but I have seen him develop some amazing code for operating systems and to top it off he is also a very accomplished Model Engineer. Cam
