Thanks for the rigidiser tip Cam. I have some liquid rigidiser given to me by a viewer which I have yet to try with thermal blanket. Apparently it is simply sprayed on with a squirt bottle. Yet to be tried. Cheers Rob
Hi Paul, when I packed up my foundry I swore I'd never do any casting again, I guess never say never. Anything I do now will be on a much smaller backyard scale (its the way I started) and only when I feel like it. Cam
I really admire your furnace Cam. I too make too many old man noises when I need to bend down low and lift heavy stuff. Your split furnace is a godsend. I need to make one of these. I'll see if I can study it a bit in the video. The over centre mechanism is what I need to understand. The lid is similar to what I have worked with, but also appears to be able to be lifted via pedal. Nice castings. And your hollow bar casting certainly surprised me that it turned out. I kept thinking it was going to leak. Done this enough times to know that you got really lucky there. Mark
G'Day Mark, yes I'm turning 64 this year so all the years of abuse are certainly catching up on me. It was over 16Kg's of metal and it is sometimes a little awkward to get the crucible out of the Furnace if the riser gets stuck to the bottom. If you would like some very rough sketches and photos of the Furnace mechanism let me know and I can e-mail them to you. Cam

very nice cam, good to see a video from you again. Also nice to see a casting video where the people are not doing stuff that makes you think that they have serious suicidal tendencies... Castings look great, and Ive always heard that phosphor bronze was one of the worst to cast with due to how much it wants to absorb gasses and end up with porousity, plus I didnt think it was supposed to fume like that. It may be a different phosphor bronze alloy than Ive seen before tho.
Hi Chirp, thanks for looking in, yes my videos are getting rather sparse, mainly due to work commitments and family time. Yes this Phosphor Bronze always smokes as soon as it starts to melt hence the need to get it up to pouring temperature as soon as possible. If it spends a lot of time in a melted state the phosphorus burns off. I've had no issues with gassing other than the odd micro bubble that you saw in the video and it is very fluid when it pours. I'd imagine its winter over your way so not much casting going on, we had 43 Deg C the other day and the day I poured it was up into the 30's. Probably a bit to hot for me to cast in but I wanted to get it done so I can get the Slotting machine back together with the new bearing. Cam
I think that you could do with something that is more substantial than long nose pliers, whether it be a set of cheapo blacksmith tongs, or a bug set of water pump pliers, but I prefer the tongs in preference. Great video!
G'day, I do have a number of Blacksmithing Tongs around but do you think I could find them. They are probably over at my mates house (who I used to run the Foundry with) but he is away on holidays. I just grabbed what I could find. I will slowly get better organized as I do more melts. Cam
Hi Mark, yes I was lucky to get all these offcuts and a very very good price. Mind you the Engineering works I bought them off did the bulk of the machine builds I designed in my previous working life so I think they looked after me. Cam
Good job Cam . Cheers 👍

A bit of a tour of that furnace would be nice. Looks like a very clever design.
Me too, very interested in the design, great job!
Hi Paul, I'll do a quick video of the Furnace and post for you guys to see.

@@theonlybuzz1969 Will do.

Fantastic work. Thanks for the excellent explanation throughout.
No worries Jimbo, thank you for looking in.

It's been a long spell since I last did any metal casting. Probably more than 20 years. Must feel good to be casting again.

Nice results. your mature exhalations when moving the crucible souinded very similar to mine. Made me laugh in sympathy.

👍👍👍👍👍
Nice castings, Cam. I envy your copious supply of bronze stock. My supply is reminiscent of hens teeth or honoured political policies.

we all make rookie mistakes... even me 🤣
Yep, we certainly do Peter and it probably won't be my last.
