If it's not for a job like medical doctor or engineer, research scientist etc, university is in general an MLM in this day and age. I wanted to go into equine. Parent says I can't take the local apprenticeship and wants me to go to uni, for equine. They sell it as "oh you can be vet tech, equine sports masseuse, event groomer, event planner etc from here, this qualifies you for any of that"... Each new subject started with "you need this other degree or course to be that job, the degree you're doing is just introductory". One of the women became a nutritionist after going for her masters, the rest didn't use it. I went into textiles because it all just turned me off so much.

as someone who didnt go to art school, and opted to practice + learn + sell work on my own, this video rules. you're so real. thank you for speaking on how broken these institutions are. we need a new art world that is less intersectional with the 1% - and more intersectional with the real world everyone else lives in.

Nearly everything you said here reminds me of how much and why I’ve also suffered from near default workaholism and am slowly getting out of that mindset. Doing animation has become a secondary aspect of my life in lieu of adult responsibilities and it’s only getting worse. Society continues to inform us these problematic habits of forcing change in our lives that do not benefit us as much as it says otherwise, and I’m always happy to see people share their alternative views to benefit their lives. Keep up the great work.

lol art schools are definitely a joke. We have an arts institute in my city and the same people are 30 now and still look ridiculous, aren’t professional, and don’t make art worth anything. I feel like low class art comes out of these places so much. They don’t teach you the business side of being an artist. It’s a business if you want it to be your full time job.

So sorry you have to face this ! Renting is honestly so difficult for our feelings and anxiety : I had to leave my flat last year, and travel across the country because I lost my job (my university decided to close off several jobs in my field to save our salaries, it overworks the people who are still employed, and it's detrimental for the students too) ; I'm safe, living at my mum's place who was nice enough to rescue me for the duration of my job hunting, but it has been so frightening to loose everything overnight.

I don't think that you can evaluate objectively your sketchbooks while you are still in the process of making them. You can evaluate your progress when you look back in your old sketchbooks several months after finishing them because only then you are more objective. BTW I'm currently working on a same sketchbook. Same brand, cover, size, and progress. Thank you for showing your version of ...my sketchbook! lol

@@MelMitchJackArt Yes it sucks because I don't have only to find a new place, it is that I have then to pack my things and move. And what is driving me crazy is that I'm evicted because my landlady wants to turn my apartment into an AirBnB. It is very hard to find small apartments for long term rental in Athens ( Greece not the US one).

As an artist and independent artschool consultant who was an art student I agree with part of your message. Artschools are not the only resource for a successful art career. If artschool won't teach you about business, you'll learn it starting in retail jobs and it doesn't have to be that way. Also, keeping your creative practice active after graduating artschool becomes a real challenge and that doesn't have to be that way either. I think art schools need to reframe expectations of creative careers, art students are not just capable of technical skill and feeding the art career expectations of the traditional 'artworld' but artstudents are creative enough to make a new artworld that's sustainable for artists.

We have the exact same issue in the academics 😂 i'm now out but have been in the publishing or perishing game for a decade and there is a really big gap between researcher that are genuinely using technical terminology the correct and educated way and those who are using big words to hide how empty their paper is! Sometimes, big names of a field do that and sometimes they are published on their name only before being retracted by the journal that published them 😅 Now i see that as a way for people to flash their ethos and symbolic capital to the others. It's a bit of "adhering to the idea the outsiders have of scholars or artists" but i totally agree with you : it makes us isolated from the general public that would benefit from having access to art and knowledge 😢

Best advice given to me in my BFA program was get your BFA at the cheapest place possible, work a few years, then spend the big bucks on the MFA. And throughout the process its networking thats most important. I ran into a former director my senior year and he said the university was setting up all its students for failure by not pushing business/marketing. He tried to be the change and the pushback was so extreme he quit. I looked ahead and double majored in Education and after meeting him just continued down that path to be an art teacher.

I graduated ACCD in Pasadena as overseas student back 2014. Even back then, I thought tuition was ridiculous, and seems like things got even more crazy. In my opinion (and I am not very sure why it is not a popular opinion, but probably I am missing something because I am not from here), US schools need tuition cap.

I've been to art school 4 years ago but never finished it due to burnout/c0vid. And when you mentioned your friend who stopped doing art after their degree i felt so seen! Because it was only RECENTLY that i felt like i wanted to pick up art again. It took me 4 years of art burnout to finally pick up the pencil again and that is just a horrifying reality. It's saddening to hear how many people just get burned out on art from ART SCHOOL of all places.

    • @MelMitchJackArt
      @MelMitchJackArt 17 днів тому

Before I say this, I wanna say that I had the luck of landing in the classrooms of some good faculty who did not tolerate bullying and bad behavior. BUT that was not always the case. The bullying that was allowed to happen and encouraged by certain faculty when I was in art school was really gross. This was 09-13 though, a much different time and many of the old guard from the 70s had yet to retire. Some of those folks were great, but there were unfortunately so many critiques I witnessed that were downright abusive in hindsight. So sorry your friend had a similar experience

And I'm working a full-time job in Communications, doing gigs on the side, and struggling due to skyrocketing rents. So much of what schools place their value in are just a mirage. A lot of art schools also don't fully teach the skills that are needed for certain jobs. I went in wanting to get a concept art job, and when I graduated with an Illustration degree I didn't have the skills or portfolio I needed to get into the concept art world. I also largely didn't get any contract work because I was so busy working to live during college, so I've had to pivot to business (and take an associates degree). I think a lot of schools need to evaluate their curriculum and connections to see what they actually can do for their students- because the college I went to did nothing.

You can fix your markers by adding a bit of alcohol into the feeder sponge that they have inside their handles. Neocolor I crayons can be put back together with a bit of heat, your hair dryer, and Neocolor II ( the water soluble ones ) with a bit of water. It seems that you sketching on a very dry environment. This art kit is a bit maximalistic. Way too many art supplies that it is a somewhat impossible to use in one go. You can minimize it further.

Hi. The super expensive but not relevant with the market needs higher education applies to all schools. Not only the Art ones. It applies to every school out there. It seems that Academia exists with the single purpose of providing qualifications. But it doesn't provide useful and realistic skills which have to be taught and practiced after graduation from the school. This is not also a contemporary phenomenon. And I'm saying that as a professional artist that graduated from a European art school back in 1989. The situation was exactly the same back then as it is now. The school that I've graduated from, taught what you've described on your video. Subjects irrelevant with the application of fine art in real life and market conditions. So you have to realize that this is not something that happens just now, that it is not something that happens only in Art related studies, and it is not something that happened only to you. What changed is that people got poorer in the process and it is harder or even impossible now to justify the extreme tuition costs with the complete and utter lack of useful and applicable skills and knowledge.

This is the expectation: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alma_de_Bretteville_Spreckels Starving art school student that ends up nude modeling the goddess of victory atop the Dewey monument in SF's Union Square. I went to Pratt. And there was always an undercurrent of thought that because it was by BedStuy and Fort Green (before it was bougie) that the mob propped up the school cause it would have cratered their property values if the school had closed its doors. If I've to do it again, two or three art classes is enough. Screw MFA

I am so grateful that my mam gave me a reality check when I finished high school, I briefly had considered doing fine art but chose to do computer engineering. Almost 15 years since then, I've moved countries twice on my own dime, bought a house with no mortgage and have continued to write and paint to my hearts content. Oh! You know I think you're really fair in being nervous. I am a part of a few groups for backpacking beginners and solo backpacking for women folks on Facebook. Facebook is weird, but i LOVE the groups on there. seeing other people stories/tips are helpful. Starting with a group trip can help build your confidence and I reccomend going with an experienced friend for your first time!

Your friends were getting offered jobs at illustration firms? What’s an illustration firm? Even design houses would make more sense but that’s graphic design, different from illustration. Fully agree with a lot of what you’re saying, but I think you have the wrong idea about how well students of the applied arts are being set up for post-uni life. We’re also getting no business training, and the market is horrendous.

hey thanks for this correction, I misspoke, they were getting hired at design companies alongside folks from graphic design. I was in Kansas City so Hallmark was a big opportunity for folks in both majors. This was also 2013 and I know that most agencys and big companies now work with agents and treat EVERYONE as freelancers as often as they can to avoid paying benefits 🫠

I like the idea of romanticising the writing and the art making. That jargon is so dry, unevocative and sterile. It’s weird because artists and art are anything but boring most of the time. I subscribed to Artforum for a while but I unsubscribed because the writing was so removed from the art and art making: The writing was about other unrelated ideas and using the art at hand as some sort of pretext. Also too many lists of cities LOL. Thanks for the video and thanks for inviting us in your new reflexions, it’s very exciting. Also : Do you like Jerry Saltz? He writes about art but I’m not sure it « art writing ». I like what he does.

hey thanks! Yeah, it really removes all of the love and tenderness out of the art, which I KNOW is there for so many of us. Art forum is particularly bad in its use of this lingo, as is pretty much anything from e-flux. Do I like Jerry Saltz? I go back in fourth on him. When I was starting my art blog in 2013, i thought his writing was really inspiring. He wrote in sensible and approachable language and I found that refreshing. He had some takes over the years that pushed me away from his perspective but I think revisiting his writing now might be an interesting exercise!

Art is learned through practice. At most at an attelier/workshop. It shouldn't be a degree. That's a scam. I learned everything I know by myself and with online courses/workshops.

I remember getting an associates in photography and all my professors wanted me to get BFA and Masters. I was a non-traditional student and my mind was questioning how I could go to a school catered to people who don’t work. I kept asking how I was going to fund my housing. No one had a straight answer for me. So I only have an associates and it’s deemed not enough because I was too poor to take on more debt.

So glad to hear you stayed true to your boundaries regardless of how others were pushing you! I was REALLY pushed towards an MFA and I’m so glad I didn’t take that path. I don’t think I would still be making art…

@@MelMitchJackArt I have a lot of mixed feelings about the traditional art world. I've experienced a lot of situations where award renowned professors write me recommendations for opportunities. To then be told, the positions I'm recommended for are wanting people with masters. Let's have a conversation about how often employers want people with masters and only want to pay $15/hr. I was recommended to apply as an assistant for Light works at Syracuse. I was excited to assist and learn from other artists. The job role didn't specify a masters. After my interview they rejected me and adjusted the job position to require a masters. Who wants to be paid $15/hr and have a masters? 🤣😭 I've seen this time and time again. The sad part is, this isn't just an issue with the art world but with the workforce too. I have seen so many majors guarantee jobs that only pay $15/hr. Can you imagine being a science major and the best you're offered is $15 starting? I have a math/science associate, plus I graduated from Ranger School. I still only get paid minimum wage with all my skills and knowledge. Currently I'm studying marketing and e-commerce and working on hiring myself. Because the current workforce isn't really working for me and I think most people.

What's the obsession with studying in the United States? Goldsmiths in London charges around $25,000 a year for overseas students, so you'd be saving $1000s there. Meanwhile the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris charges less than $500 a year no matter what country you're from or what courses you want to do. Yes, $500. Of course you need French to B2 standard minimum (in British terms that's basically A Level French). Even I have French to that level. If I can do it, anyone can. My advice: if you want to study fine art, take a close look at the opportunities out there ー worldwide. PS: how did that professor even know you were working a job? Don't tell him!
