    Wow love all your Art, tips, techniques, inspirations, ideas and reasons for self evaluation. I'm returning to my art after a long hiatus and I just stumbled across your channel by chance. I'm definitely going to follow you, to learn all aspects of drawing and painting from life. Your art is mind blowing, Costa Rica looks like an amazing place to visit. Thank You for sharing and inspiring Us. One thing I'm going to do, is weekly trip to explore Nature and surrounding areas & draw from real life, not get bogged down at home and getting majority of my ideas from magazines, UA-cam etc. So going to make up a little shoulder backpack bag and go on art adventures. You truly are an out of this world artist and HUGE inspiration to me. Sending hugs and many Thanks for stirring my artist cauldron. Nameste🙏 🎨📓📝💜🌈☀🌹😘

    Nice that you are here in the Bay Area! I enjoyed learning from the way you are learning. Though I am focused on watercolor, I just wanted to say that I appreciate you! I haven't yet tried working in a book, but am slowly warming up to the idea. Thank you!

    Thank you, I have trouble with buying sketchbooks then abandoning them. The idea of rules for each sketchbook might just work for me. It is similar to limiting a color palette or some other restriction in painting, which I use constantly, and which I find very freeing.

    Hi there! Just found your channel, Its very obvious you are a teacher! Most people dont go into depth into the scientific background of each subject. How long does it take you to paint a scene? And do you just paint outside in plain air? Love your sketches!

    • @MelMitchJackArt
      @MelMitchJackArt  5 місяців тому +1

      Aw thank you and welcome! My sister is a science teacher so she rubs off on me a lot! I’m glad you appreciate me geeking out!
      As far as how long it takes me depends mostly on the day and how often I’ve been practicing with my materials. Rough estimate is between 40-90 mins on a single painting. Sometimes I paint a bit faster when using brush pens or simplifying forms!
      The first few pieces in this book were done as plein air paintings! I love that process and think it’s super magic. Thanks again!

    Great video! I think I fall more into self-criticism rather than self evaluation. I will have to reframe my thinking. Also, the whole beginning of the video I was thinking, “those are case for making paints. I know they are. They have to be.” And then you confirmed. The one looks like Coral, which is my favorite of theirs. I’m such a nerd. Anyway…

    • @MelMitchJackArt
      @MelMitchJackArt  5 місяців тому +1

      The self criticism is hard! I relate to that. Used to be an art critic until that started turning in on myself too much. Case for making is responsible for so many gratuitous paint and supply purchases! Their paper and paint are awesome.

    What an absolutely wonderful watercolour palette! Would you mind sharing the brand and specific colours? Thank you in advance & take care.

    • @MelMitchJackArt
      @MelMitchJackArt  5 місяців тому

      oh for sure! That palette is a custom one I created from Case for Making! They are handmade watercolors that are such a treat to use. I primarily use my gouache palette in the sketchbook and I'm happy to share that palette too! For that gorgeous neon palette you see here though, Here are the colors:
      CfM Coral, CfM Fuchsia, Fluorescent Magenta, CfM Lupine, Mineral Violet, Ultramarine Pink, Silver, Ultramarine Blue Light, Cerulean, CfM Lime, CfM Meadow, CfM Cypress Green, Blue Ridge Violet Hematite (my favorite brown of all time!), and CfM Paynes Grey.
      I got this set when I was feeling super uninspired and wanted to paint again. Soooo glad i did!

      Thank you, Mel, for taking the trouble to specify everything!
      Completely agree about the brown (I’ve always loved the egg-planty ones best). And some of the other colours are superb, as well.
      As I’ve only just started out, it seems a bit eccentric 💃🏻 to have handmade watercolours shipped from the US to Germany but if I’m still at it in six months I’ll reconsider - and let you know. Promise!

      @@MentalHealthMatters_1st oh! awesome. If you are just starting out i would recommend Daniel Smith watercolors OR since you are in Germany, Kremer! They are based in Germany and that's the supplier Case for Making sources for their pigments. One of their small primary sets would be a wonderful place to start.
      Best thing you can buy as a beginner is a set of 3 primaries with some white gouache. I'm working on some videos about this concept at the moment but James Gurney has quite a bit on them as well. So much is possible with Azo Yellow, Ultramarine Blue, and Pyrrole Red!

    I don't think that you can evaluate objectively your sketchbooks while you are still in the process of making them. You can evaluate your progress when you look back in your old sketchbooks several months after finishing them because only then you are more objective.
    BTW I'm currently working on a same sketchbook. Same brand, cover, size, and progress. Thank you for showing your version of ...my sketchbook! lol
