Hello and welcome to Lake*Trotter. Fishing.
Having mainly fished for course fish over the years on local lakes and canals I am now learning to catch fish in rivers using a Fly Fishing setup.
In future videos I will be mixing my fishing adventures with wild camping & catch 'n' cooks (permitted catches only) in woods and mountainous regions once I have a better idea and more experience of catching trout.
This year (2024) has been the start of an exciting journey with a fly fishing rod.
I hope you enjoy my videos.
All the best!

Welcome back to Lake*Trotter. Fishing. Ealier this year I said goodbye to my Grandad, Bampy Des. Today's session, 28th September 2024, would have been my Grandads 90th Birthday. The past 3 or four days have not been good for fishing on the Afon Lwyd so just before midday I decided to check the conditions as I really wanted to put a few fish in the net using my new Wychwood Drift Nymph MK2 befor...

Fly Fishing isn't easy with so many tree's and a 10ft fly rod

Well, I didn't have the best time snagging in tree's overhead when the hook pings out of the fishes mouth. There has been a lot of tree growth over the past few months which made the fishing difficult even more so using a 10ft fly fishing rod. I did catch many fish but maybe I'll try again with my 7ft rod. I hope you enjoy this video & thank you for watching!
How I Euro Nymph to Catch MORE Brown Trout On My Local River - The Afon Lwyd

Since I was shown how to do this by Nathan my fish numbers have dramatically increased even on those short evening sessions. I really hope this vid...
The River Was Extremely Low

Firstly, Welcome to all of my new subscribers! This session was a spontaneous "I'm Going Fishing" moment. As I drove over the bridge by the skatepark I could see a huge pebble beach area...The Afon Lwyd was running very low! I wasn't expecting much this evening in terms of fish numbers but I was happy with the amount of fish in the net. Lower water levels mean less oxygenated water for the fish...
Wading Boot Felt Sole Repair (Update)

This is my wading boot felt sole repair update to show you how the boots are doing after 5 uses after the repair was made. I am happy with the outcome although I do need to apply more pressure on the "transition area" between the heel & toe as parts haven't made a good contact but that I believe is down to my own errors in not applying enough pressure to that area of the boot. You really should not have to do this, after all you paid good money for them. Do these companies carry out any tests
@martincorcoran8263 Hi Martin, i bought these in a used condition as I was desperate to get back out in my local river which I probably should have mentioned in the video to be fair. Reason being, I had another pair of these whilst out in the river on a previous session when the pair I was originally wearing the whole mid sole came off the left boot and floated away down stream. I had an extremely difficult and dangerous time getting back up stream to say the least! I do like the look of these boots and they are comfortable to wear but I won't be buying these again. Im new to fly fishing and my own fault for buying used and the same pair that originally caused me problems 🤦 I agree with what you are saying though. Types of boots is definitely something I need to brush up on though so I can choose more wisely. Thank you for commenting and watching. It's much appreciated! All the best 👍
Thanks for doing the review but can you fit 2 people fishing doing nights over the winter in it?
@Cavanpikefishing Hiya, bud! Personally, I wouldn't buy this for two people with the assumption that you have two beds going in there. This is a single skin brolly system, not a bivvy, and it doesn't have a front panel to close up just in case you wasnt sure. I can't be 100% as I didn't try 2 people in it, but I think you could squeeze 2 in there depending on the width of your sleep systems, but it would be a squeeze. I have a video called "fishing a South Westerly Wind" where you can get a better view of the width, depth, and height in comparison to my chair, at least. I was using this as a day brolly, but I sold it as I was rarely using it. I'd get the dimensions of both sleep systems if you are using them, add the widths together and find a shelter based on the total base width compared to the combined bed width and the longest bed if that makes sense? Hope that helps your decision and thanks for watching and for you question! All the best! 👍🏼
@@laketrotterfishing that's great thanks for your help no i think a 2 man budget bivvy i will go for i will look at that other video on your channel but i do need something big for for the gear and other people and my sons i have 4 and one girl so something bigger thanks again
@Cavanpikefishing yeah i would mate. You can get a decent 2 man bivvy for only a little bit more money, so I think you'd be better off paying that bit more. Plus, you can get an overwrap for the bivvy which will help keep some heat in and reduce condensation when its cold. I hope you find what your looking for!
@@laketrotterfishing thank u🎣✌️
Hi just came across your channel, very nice video. Can I ask what kind of line and leader set up you use? Oh and what nymphs. Keep it going
@martincorcoran8263 Hi Martin! I am using an 8lb Maxima Chameleon line straight through (no fly line just mono), tied to a 2mm tippet ring, then I have 4lb Wychwood Ghost flurocarbon from my tippet ring to my point fly. Nymphs really depend on the conditions but the nymph I was catching on in this video was a home tied Caddis larva imitation on a size 14 and 16 jig hook. If you can find the community page on my channel, you can see the fly there. Thanks for watching and for your comment! All the best 👍🏼 ✌🏼
What's up man! This is thefishtracker! I sub to your channel bro! Word kept as I said. Keep casting as long as the bites hot! 👍 🤜🤛 💪✌️

What nymphs you using mate? I have bought loads from the tackle shop and not bite. Even watching them slide right in front of the fish.
@dj-fattman I have a couple of home tied patterns based on a Caddis Nymph. When are you out fishing next I'll pop down with you and bring some nymphs for you to try

walked the lwyd yesterday to see what’s about might have a crack on the weekend haven’t touched my fly rod in forever, if i see anyone spinning ill send them for a swim 🤣
@dominicbarne5218 Yes mate blow the dust off and give it bash! It's good fishing on our river...hope you don't catch as many tree's as I do and yes send em in! 😆 thanks for watching and commenting! 👍🏼
There are lots of people spinning and lure fishing on the river lately. We need NRW to get down there and sort it out
@FlyfishingLwyd Yes! Your right there. These kids walked past me while I was on the glide by the fallen tree. They asked tips, I said there's no spinning on this river and to check the rules for each river you plan to go to. They apologised and moved on. Last year I saw a guy with his kid spinning using a carp or sea rod upstream of the skatepark!!!!!!! I'm not sure what he was expecting to catch in the lwyd but it's not good for the fish and certainly not necessary.
@@laketrotterfishing I caught three guys up by chapel lane lure fishing smoking weed and drinking strongbow. I challenged them and they tried to claim they were not fishing even though they had a rod. And I had seen them fishing the most annoying part is they were just dumping their empty cans on the river bank.
@FlyfishingLwyd some people need to get a grip. Especially "grown ups"! Even if signs were put up people will still ignore them. If the angling clubs patrol their waters maybe this wouldn't happen as much at least. P.S. still waiting on my rod :(
The robin was probably Bamp watching over you and giving you luck , which is what you had x
@debrascott5005 Yes I definitely think that too 🫶❤️

Another interesting video, well done and the underwater footage was excellent. Keep up the good work
Thank you ❤
Excellent thanks for sharing mate
No problem 👍 hope this gives you more of an idea
Hi I have exactly the same boot and the same issue can you tell me if this process worked please if not I may just buy new boots great instructional upload by the way Thanks
Hi Matt! This process did work. I have used the boots 3 or 4 times since this video and I've had no problems so far (my river is very rocky too so my soles are at all angles wading upstream). The only issue I can find so far is the gluing of the heel transition where the felt sole didn't stick to the mid sole for what ever reason but hasnt caused a problem yet. Some people tack the felt sole to the mid sole. Not sure if that would solve the issue but for the price of some glue I'd say it's definitely worth trying to fix them. Just soak the soles in hot water for 5 or 10 mins to make it easier to remove the damaged sole. I will get an update video done this evening if I have time so you can have a visual of what I mean. Thanks for viewing too much appreciated 🙏
@@laketrotterfishing hey that’s fantastic news and much appreciated I have subscribed to your channel as you were good enough to take time out and upload the video and share with others and that’s awesome all the best mate will watch your updates
Some nice fishing there mate! I'm sure there were a few Sea Trout looking at those colours. What lines setup is on Nath's Nymph Rod? And What knot do you use to present the two nymphs, or is it wet fly to nymph? I am completely having no luck on the fly on the river. But had a few trout parr on bait the other day. Good to see after pollution we have had recently.
Thanks bud! Yes I thought the last fish was definitely more sea Trout looking with it being more silver, dotty and off colour fins. I only have his rod. On my reel is 8lb mono to a tippet ring with a fluro tippet at 4lb and a water knot to attach the dropper 👍🏼
@@laketrotterfishing Nice one bro, wasnt sure if you just had a real long leader or if you had a streamline sinking line. Might have to give it a go with one of my light lure rods and just use one my reels with mono on it. That deffo looked like a Sea Trout with the colours, as I was watching your video Charlie from Rapala put some pics up of ST he has been having. When I compared them both they looked very similar! Was down the river yesterday two more parr on further up by the Oasis and then a larger one down on the pool where you had the Otter on camera. I actually had an Otter come up from my feet the other day, that was pretty cool! Have you noticed there isnt as many Minnow as usual?
Keep up the great work. Laketrotter happy fishing

Hi Brian, this is the Afon Lwyd in Torfaen, South Wales. It's my local river. A river that's not very wide but has a good pace to it. Torfaen means "breaker of stones". Thank you for the comment and for watching 🙏👍
Lovely to see an otter on the river mate, last time I was one was up in croesy. What nymphs you using? Haven't had chance to hit the river since it opened.

They can say goodbye to the tench they have stocked in the boating lake 😢
@scottpreece7879 well I read they can feed on many other kinds like eels, frogs, moorhens and crustaceans so I'm praying that the Otter doesn't have too many fish locally and finds enough other food sources

Nice fishing it's not easy to get a fish on the dry this early in the season especially on the Lwyd. You said you missed a few fish? Can I suggest you control the line more with your left hand will control the slack and help you keep more in contact. Top fishing
Thank you for that tip! I will definitely work on that. I find line control tricky because I want the fly or nymph to look natural in the flow. When I try keeping in contact, I find I disturb the fly making it not look natural. It seems such an art. The river is fast I find retrieving line from upstream and letting line out down stream yo match the flow difficult too. It's all practice though and just happy to be back out after a long absence this time around. Appreciate your view and input 👌 👍
Try a furled leader 5-6ft with plenty of gink to help it float. And having a 2-3ft of tippett should help with the drift. And because you are using a 6ft rod break the runs down into smaller sections is always going to be difficult to correct the fly line with a short rod.
OK I'll get a furled leader. Can that also be used while nymphing? Shorter drifts make sense too. I did lose a fly and straightened out two hooks due to my nymph getting snagged under rocks. May try an indicator next time to help control depth too
Tight lines✌️

I keep saying I'll buy a fly combo to give it a go on my local canal, then I go and buy another lure rod instead 🤣

Love it. Last year I made a single hook wire trace leader to fish those Jack's. Using double worm, make them look like an X with a stick float so I could quickly change the depth. Chuck it to the side of the jack and bang on it. Had 4 of them competing for the bait, lol. Yet to catch the jack with the white tail though. He gives you the look of 'yeah right, seen those numpties fall for it, not me' lol

Still didnt catch anything, LMAO. Hit the Brecon Basin and had Chub on the fly though, so happy with that one. When you out next?
I would recommend getting a nymphing rod you will catch more on the nymph
Cheers Nathan! I've just bought a 6ft 3wt rod for small streams so will have to be next month hopefully. What lenght and weight do you recommend for the nymphing? I think this rod is too heavy for the smaller fish being a 7wt but its got me out there having fun for now 😁
I use 10ft 3# rod on the Lwyd it's perfect. There are a lot of god rods about and some really good deals. I sometimes use a 6ft 3# it's really good for getting in the tight spots for dry fly or even dry droppers.
@@FlyfishingLwyd I currently have a 9ft rod so the 6ft rod I bought will be good on here too then based on what you say. Are nymph rods stiffer or something?
No the tip is softer so you can feel the nymphs on the bottom. And the but sections of the rod are stiff which is where all the power comes from.
I get you. Thank you for the help and Info, very kind of you 👍
P.s between us I haven't got a clue about fly fishing 😂😂😂 I know that fish was a belter for that river 😍
🤣🤣 I thought you did. Seems this style would be right up your street. Yes was well happy with this. Don't think they go a great deal bigger in here
@@laketrotterfishing Some belters in the river man, especially in the swim just above the waterfall. 11lb Salmon caught recently down by the boaty too.
@@dj-fattman 😮 jeez man I was told the trout only go up to the 2lb mark apart from the odd salmon and sea trout
@@laketrotterfishing They do vary in size mate, had 3.5lb out of there before. Pontypool angling stretch they seem to be bigger again. Some big ones in the Brook too. Think we have it tougher due to the people / dog pressure around the park.
Oh don't talk to me about the dogs 😂😂 people can see I'm fishing and still let their dogs run in the waters I'm fishing like they have priority. I don't mind if I'm setting up or packing up but when they can clearly see I'm actively fishing I think its just inconsiderate of them. If im out with my dog and someones fishing I respect their right and move to the next available point of entry. They'd soon complain if their pup got a hook in it. What are the stock levels like because pontypool is strictly c&r but I believe cwmbran stretch is/was to keep 2 per angler per day with minimum of 8"? I'd be lucky to even catch 2 😂

Good to see you yesterday mate.
Hiya mate! Good to see you out n about too bud 👍✌️
Why cut the video in 10:39? That I was looking forward to see! Where is important.... You just press skipped because you encounter some unpleasant situation!..... What more is to see ... I can't press skipp in real life! So useles video! 👎
Because I didn't realise that there was a cap inserted on the thread which I was supposed to take out before fitting the centre pole which I did mention before and after the cut. I wouldn't go as far as saying its a "useless" video just because I didn't show the removal of a small unscrewable cap which can be seen on the floor in the next frame and mentioned. Wasn't something that was unpleasant at all I just didn't think it was important to show myself underneath a brolly removing a cap which took about 5 or 10 seconds to remove. If that is what you was looking forward to seeing then I'm a bit concerned for you but thanks for watching 👍
Edit: you know what I meant! No need to be consern after, be consern before and show all the actions if you really want to make a review etc. Show the whole true! All the situations! Try an unboxing before filming and then show and film the actions properly without cuts and stuff that are confusing! Just an advice. You may do as you please but accept all opinions than. Good or bad. Cheers.
@@inSaNe_44 that's why I explained what I was doing and showed the cap that needs removing before the insertion of the centre pole. I don't know how it was confusing as I explained what I was doing. It's not like I completely missed it out but thanks for your input!
