Why I like TMBG's Long Tall Weekend more than everyone else
A firehose of info and reactions for the 2023 vinyl reissue of They Might Be Giants' 1999 eMusic-only album Long Tall Weekend - one I've always had a particular fondness for. Unlike certain people I could name...

TMBG's The Spine is better than I remember (AND it's on vinyl!)
Переглядів 435Рік тому
Here are some thoughts on TMBG's 2004 album The Spine - which I immediately bought when I got the email from the band that it was being pressed on vinyl in 2023 for the very first time. A lost classic of sorts, The Spine comes from an era in They Might Be Giants' career that some fans bypassed and others remember with... varying degrees of fondness.

I like the ‘You must be thinking of some other band’ mug
It is too short, it needed about another minute. To answer his question, it was out around the spring of '71. I may be a little off.
This is my Dad❤
You are a pretentious obnoxious jerk. Have I the Right was hugely popular. They had other hits too. Compare the money made during their careers to the money you make. Too bad that you are the only one who thinks you are clever and witty.
You need to stop critiqueing music you know nothing about and go back to your day job: "Would you like fries with that?"
You are a jerk. Freddie and the dreamers were hugely poular and had other hits. Compare the money they made during their career with the money you make.
Wow a sealed copy, I have my original copy, cleaned it up and recorded what’s in as best as I could. Amazing album.
Spot on review ... a lost gem!
I discovered Cream around 1978. Was not around to see live shows back in '67 & '68, but I did witness the final concert of Black Flag in 1986 in Detroit at Harpos.
You gotta say that piano ending is incredible!
I never cared for Long Tall Weekend. Didn't Like John Henry either. I liked everything from their First Album down to Mink Car with exception of those two. I don't know why I never got into them like everybody else did. Mink Car was amazing though.
I think they just like to keep it secret so that it’s more fun for the fans who do join up. A fun feeling of “being in on the secret” seems extremely tmbg to me. Not that I’d know anything about it. You must be thinking of some other band…
Could we please just listen to Help without your comments? I'd really like to hear this version, nowhere else available. Thanks so much!
A bold take lmao
NC6 started as a garage band and their first releases were in that style, check out their first album, Breakthrough, from 1966. They turned to a more pop oriented sound, which was quite successful, sales wise. Another band from Chicago from the sixties.
The Shadows of Knight were huge in the Chicago area in 1966. They recorded two albums and drew overflow crowds as the house band at The Cellar in Arlington Heights. Both of the albums are must-haves for anyone into 60s music. Their interpretation of the Chicago blues was unique, blending blues, rock, and psychedelia. One of their last records, I'm Gonna Make You Mine, is awesome.
Actually, The Third Booth is from Canton, Illinois, not Peoria. This is their one and only release. The members were all from the small town of Canton, about 30 miles outside of Peoria. Their name was due to the fact that they hung out at a drug store in town and always sat in the third booth. I was friends with one of the members who cowrote I Need Love. My friend's family made him quit the band because they did not like all the attention that the band was getting. They were afraid of what might happen if record producers and such people were to influence them. After all, these were just kids from a small town. Shortly after he quit, the record started to receive air play on WLS in Chicago and became a regional hit. The other members' families felt the same way as my friend's family and the band was dissolved. I think that they had the talent to go on, but it wasn't meant to be.
Funny

always excited to see some respect for long tall weekend! it's my favourite as well, to a degree that i'm surprised youtube didn't show me this until now. its weird ominous vibe is possibly my favourite thing about it; i think it has a stunningly cohesive atmosphere for what are technically "leftover" songs. i liked your takes on the tracks. the idea of dark and metric being about some kind of remote canadian town amused me, because i'm from a remote canadian town and that's exactly what it always makes me think of, lol. also intrigued by the idea of counterfeit faker being about flans' brother; i've never heard that interpretation before, and i don't often consider tmbg to be a band that writes autobiographically, but something about that analysis strikes me as credible. maybe it's a more subtle revisiting of the same ideas from flood's hot cha? i think my one disagreement would be about severe tire damage's version of they got lost being better. i think the slower take on it serves the song better. it just _sounds_ like the song itself is lost, driving in circles, and i consider it a strength when a song's musical landscape reflects its lyrics. the faster version might be more rocking, but i think it's also more generic. (then again, it serves its purpose as a live recording. fun stuff like that is what concerts are best for.) somebody else said this already, but now all they need to do is release this album on cd, for _me_ ...
Great song, really bad audio.
Terry Black - Unless You Care / Can't We Go Somewhere Label: Arc Records (4) - A1074 Format: Vinyl, 7", 45 RPM, Single Country: Canada Released: Jul 1964 Canadian singer, teen idol and radio DJ (born February 3, 1949 in Burnaby, B.C. and died June 28, 2009 in Kamloops, B.C.). Started his singing career at age 15 with his first release "Unless You Care" on Arc Records. His solo career ended in 1970 when he married Laurel Ward, thereafter performing with her as Black & Ward until they divorced. "Unless You Care" is a song written by P.F. Sloan and Steve Barri and performed by Terry Black. It reached No. 2 on Canada's RPM Top 40 & 5 and No. 99 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 1964. The song was featured on his 1965 album, Only 16
These are great!
Thanks for the scrutiny - I almost bought this. You legend ✊
There is no Billy Shears😂
55 years later and idiots still believe this stupidity
Please One of best cover of Winchester Cathedral was made by The Flippers from Colombia.
Billy Shears' main talent was vocal and singing vocals mimickary. Hence his ability, with ease, to sing two different vocal styles on the record.
You have failed in proving to me that you like it more than I do.
TMBG albums aren't even albums. They're little worlds that feel like no other, somewhere between Brooklyn some other dimension that only They belong to.
I stopped keeping track as actively around Glean or Phone Power. I still like a lot of the songs in the last few years, I just don't listen to albums anymore so it's harder to find the same passion for an era.
Would have been good to hear the lyrics for any intel therein.
This song is awesome.
You;re wrong -- this was THE famous version!
Can't hear the Beatles influence re the beat...I was ten at the time & straight off, the beat was Glad All Over by the Dave Clark Five which had been a hit a few months earlier. As for the `Croony, fatuous, singing....I must assume you dislike Neil Sedaka, who you could very easily assume is singing along with the DCF here?
Ain't It So. My favorite RC album. And impossible to find. Just Between Us is a close second.
I think I might like Long Tall Weekend better than even you, because it was the first TMBG album I remember coming out when I was a kid (I was 4) and I was so excited for new TMBG songs. "She Thinks She's Edith Head" and "Maybe I Know" were my favorite songs for many years (replacing "Put Your Hand Inside the Puppet Head" which was apparently my fav song as a toddler...) I didn't even know it was an eMusic album until this video, since I guess my parents must have immediately burned it onto a CD so we could all listen in the car, and I think they printed out the cover art for the CD case too! Great breakdown, definitely an album that holds up, I agree that the song sequencing is really well done! Funnily enough, I did always know "Edison Museum" wasn't Flans, because the song always scared me as a kid and the sudden unfamiliar voice made it creepier to me (and yes my dad did tell me and my brother he'd take us there when we "quarreled")
The Darlings of Lumberland remains one of the wildest tracks in terms of rhythm, melody, and straight up music theory that I've ever heard from a "rock" group. Love it!
All we have to do is watch the Get Back documentary to know that the Paul is dead. Conspiracy theory is total bullshit. The amount of reminiscing from the old days is proof enough. Not to mention that Paul’s family would’ve never gone for it. They wouldn’t have anything to do with the fake Paul.
If only you'd had the French EP as the other 2 songs are great, particularly 'I Can't Keep From Crying' which was originally a 1929 Blues song by Blind Willie Johnson and was covered by The Blues Project featuring Al Kooper. The Random Blues band version is pure snarly Garage Rock and nothing like the godawful Winchester Cathedral.
"Have I The Right" was a massive hit during my youth and I still love it. Never get tired of it. 👈⬅
It would probably help if you would shut your mouth while the record was playing so someone could actually listen to it. Your clueless opinion is not important enough to listen to during the song.
OH THANK YOU FOR TALKING ALL OVER THE SONGS...
They had three excellent singles (actually more but three must hears). Love You So Much was a big hit in Chicago when they were still relatively unknown nationally, then I Will Always Think About You (#1 @ WLS Chicago/#22 on Billboard's Hot 100) and the one you just listened to are their three best IMO and I have them all (central Illinois born and raised).
"Have I the Right?" was the debut single and biggest hit of British band The Honeycombs. It was written by Ken Howard and Alan Blaikley, who were impressed by the group's lead vocalist, Dennis D'Ell, and the fact that they had a female drummer, Anne (‘Honey’) Lantree. The group were looking for material to play for an audition with record producer Joe Meek, and they played the songs Howard and Blaikley had just given them. Meek decided to record one of them, "Have I the Right?", there and then. Meek used his apartment at 304 Holloway Road, Islington (North London) as a recording studio. Three U.K. No.1 hits were produced there: "Johnny Remember Me" by John Leyton in 1961, "Telstar" by The Tornados in 1962, and the last of them, "Have I the Right?" in 1964 Conspicuous in "Have I the Right?" is the prominent part of the drums that carry the song. Their effect was enhanced by having the members of the group stamp their feet on the wooden stairs to the studio. Meek recorded the sound with five microphones he had fixed to the banisters with bicycle clips. For the finishing touch someone beat a tambourine directly onto a microphone. The recording was somewhat speeded up (as were a lot of Meek’s productions), reportedly to the disappointment of Dennis D'Ell, who regretted that he could not reproduce this sound on stage
To all PID Believers watch the "James Paul McCartney" TV special 1973 (here on UA-cam for everyone to see) at the 20 minutes mark there's a McCartney family get together in a Liverpool pub, they're all getting pissed (drunk) calling him Paul singing along with him and showering him with kisses! Now how is it that his Dad, aunties, uncles and cousins, can not see that it's not their Paul, the one they have grown up with, the one they have always known, but he's in fact an imposter named Billy?
....Money & Credence.Did not attend McCartney senior funeral.
@@tgray119I don't know what you're talking about! But I can tell you why McCartney didn't attend his father's funeral, because Jim McCartneys wife asked him not to, she said she didn't want it to turn into a Circus and who can't blame her!
You are right, a lot of studio musicians here, however, on Daydream, Mike is playing rhythm guitar and the harmonics, Peter Piano. Goin down has both Mike & Peter on guitar, possibly Peter on bass (different liner notes state different things)
Paul McCartney (1942-1966) RIP William Shears Campbell (1937-?)
Stop the hoax!
Let’s see the death certificate of Paul and the birth certificate of Billy. What month and day was Billy born? Who were his parents, siblings and relatives? If he was that talented (which he evidently is) why would you not want your real name attached to your songs? You want a guy that’s willing to live a lie his whole life to get credit for something he doesn’t want. Makes no sense
4:07 but I like fun is a different album!
I played that last night, got a reply from a member. Also shared it on Facebook and got a lot of likes and comments from friends remembering it.
T.A. was abbreviation for Talent Associates and was distributed by Bell Records. Other groups on ithe label's roster include Five Flights Up and early Seals and Crofts.
