. In January 1973 Ray Charles released his second instrumental jazz album of the 1970s: Jazz Number II. This is a sealed copy of the original gatefold vinyl record. Ray released three such albums in this decade, the final coming out in 1975. Jazz Number II was issued on Ray's own label, Tangerine (distributed by ABC).
The band, with Ray as its piano-playing leader, is very hot in together on this LP. Ray co-wrote the opening number, the thrilling eight-minute "Our Suite". To quote the text inside, "He’s the man. He’s got the music. He’s got the band." The gatefold looks cool on the outside as well. This was Ray's first gatefold album since My Kind of Jazz 1970.
No singles were released from Jazz Number II. The vinyl version of this album is one of Ray’s less common ones, but it is generally not too expensive. Sealed copies are much harder to find but could be worth it if you can find one.
