WHY MY BACKPACKING GEAR LOADOUT IS BETTER THAN YOURS | WHY DO WE DO THIS!?
Переглядів 2,4 тис.3 роки тому
As backpackers, it’s very way to get carried away in the gear load out and gear list videos. Backing gear is so much fun and is a necessary part of hiking on the trail. But, when the backpacking gear lists become our main focus we have to re-align. We also compare ourselves to those such as Darwin on the trail, Dan Becker, and many others. We need to find the gear that we have and what works an...

In this video I will cover what I feel is the BEST BACKPACKING TENT UNDER $200 and let you know why I chose this tent specifically. In my opinion ultralight backpacking videos confused me on what is most important to backpacking. It's not all about ul gear and how much your backpack weighs. Great video. I have the Six Moon Solo and had some experiences that made me question using it. Last fall I nailed the set up and I love this tent. It is super light and has tons of space inside. I use my vestibule to store my boots, water bladder, stove, etc. All of my other gear is in the ten with me, nice and dry and bug-free. I use a S2S Ether Light XT pad and have PLENTY of space. Love this tent. I keep looking for free standing tents with the same weight, yet they just are not out there at such an affordable cost. Happy hiking

I'm 6'4" and overweight and I use this with a 3.5" thick sleeping pad. It CAN work for larger people, its not going to be as comfortable as my Litefighter tents but its also a fraction of the weight. I wanted to do what I could to cut weight without spending thousands of dollars and this product is perfect for that. Yes, you do need to be more careful when using it as a rain cape because of its dual purpose uses, but I rarely hike through rain and the ultralight disposable rain gear I've used in the past is so fragile it is practically a single-use option so I already learned to be careful with capes, ponchos, and rain jackets before ever using this one. Ideally I'd love to replace this with something larger with mesh encapsulation but the options right now are to spend $650-1400 to gain weight and lose cape functionality in doing so, or spend triple what this cost to lose 5oz and lose the cape function while gaining nothing else from the alternate product.

I've hiked thousands of mile with a Gatewood Cape and the inner Serenity NetTent as a shelter. It sets up fast and is very versatile. It never leaks, is storm proof and doesn't have any condensation problems. The hole at the top is great for creating a top vent for ventilation; just put your hat on top of the pole and create a little protected top vent with the hood. I still carry a lightweight raincoat and an umbrella but I have used the shelter as additional rain protection in monsoons.

You can't blame a product that you have chosen to be multi-functional, for being unuseable if you have been careless with it (you know it's 15D be aware when you "walk past some brush"). Think it through for your needs before purchase.

I own this tent, but I can tell you that it’s not a double wall tent. The condensation liner is just that, a liner. It’s not going to increase ventilation. It’s simply helps stop dripping, condensation from falling on you.

Funny story from Germany. We have a new national trail, the NST - North-South-Trail. It’s about 3600 km and a few young men did their thruhike with fancy ultralight gear. But than came a 58year old short woman with a 38 pound-pack and she did it. 💥 They ignored her…..

Doesn't look like it's meant to be a tent. It's a poncho that can be used as a tent in emergency. Probably a nice addition to a day pack as one of your 10 essentials.

Some people really do use tents just like that. Search for "trekking pole solo ultralight tents" and you'll see a whole class of products just like this (except this is the only one that's also a poncho).

MSR would not rubberize the handle because many users of backcountry pots cook over an open flame (not just controllable gas or canister stoves), and it would melt.

Way late to comment but I am still rocking one of these after 30 plus years. IMO depending on your winter weather it even excels in extreme cold. Vestibule easily let’s stay in your bag and cook, as well as leaving room for gear. I have been looking for a new tent but my older stuff is still as viable as it was years ago. Ty for the review.

Get Out Gear Blanket Thoughts: I initially bought a Horizon Hound GR-20 down blanket (Amazon). It was orange, which is cool, but after a while I wanted a green one to blend a bit better in the wild, because I'm weird like that. Anyway, I decided to put the GR-20 in my wife's vehicle for emergency use, and went looking for a green replacement. I bought the Get Out Gear that you review here. It is nowhere near as effective as the GR-20. I then realized that the GR-20 came in green, and ordered one. I did side-by-side testing of these and also had my wife review. We both independently realized that the GR-20 was miles better. And it's only a couple of bucks more. I highly recommend the HH GR-20; better fill, better stitching, and packs as small and has such a similar weight that the delta is not worth worrying about, even for an UL guy. Cascade Trekking Poles: These are also available at Costco. Almost everyone knows someone with a membership if you don't have one. I picked a pair up last summer after realizing my REI and Black Diamond aluminum poles were not up to the task of working as structure in tarps or tents without deforming. They were $32 an because of the cheap price, I'd dismissed them. After finally buying them, I realized how outstanding they are. I'm not sure if they'll sell single sets next season, however they're advertised on Costco.com for $79 for TWO pairs, which is about what I paid for my garbage aluminum poles, and the Cascades come with cork handles and a bunch of different tip and basket options. Solid win.

There are two other tents that spring to mind. The Gossamer Gear 'The One' which meets all the criteria here, and the SMD Skyscape series (which miss, barely, one direction or the other depending on version). The Scout version is 40oz but is currently only $130 (holiday sale, normally $160) for a very durable sil-poly tent with MASSIVE ventilation, two doors, two vestibules, and is really long. The same attributes apply to the Trekker, but this one is currently $229 (holiday sale, normally $270) but only weighs 28oz. I had an older version and it was phenomenal (and particularly well suited to very tall folks). As another option, which IS truly ultralight, the Deschutes Tarp when combined with the Serenity Net Tent gets you what amounts to a double-wall tent and that meets all your criteria.
