Have the DD X-Mid 2 and it's the weirdest thing. Even though it can be difficult to pitch, there is just something about it that makes you love using it. It's really novel and an absolute palace for two people. Would highly recommend

I wanted a second tent that was a bit easier to setup though and you actually got me to pull the trigger on the TarpTent Rainbow Li. I would like to see the lanshan and paria arches tents on this video. Both are under 200 for the 2 person versions and great for the price. The Arches is slightly wider and longer than the Lanshan.
I've been looking more and more into the lanshan for a tent as I prefer hammocks but would like the ability to go above the timber line sometime. I hear great things but not from many of the bigger UA-camrs like Dan Becker or outdoor Thor
Just recently got the x-mid 1p. I love it so far. I’m 6’2” and thinner framed, and it is a bit cramped, but it works fine for me. You could be a few inches taller and still work with it. The size of the vestibules are great.

I have both the Lunar solo by Six Moons and the X-mid 1 by Dan Durston. My old Lunar solo is silnylon which will retain some moisture. ( The new ones are Silpoly ). The X-Mid 1 is 100% polyester with a silicone polyester coating which does not retain moisture. That lets me pack a dryer tent in the mornings. I also use a Tyvek groundsheet in the DD X-Mid 1.
I got the X-Mid 1P because the polyester fabric does not stretch and absorb water the way nylon tents do. Also you can see on the setup video on the Dan Durston YT site how to roll the doors so they don't sag much.
I was also going to suggest taking a look a the discussions and Q&A sections of the Drop site for the Durston 1P and 2P. He makes some very compelling, well thought out arguments about the selection of materials used in the X-Mid tents, along with comparisons of may competitors. Really worth the read. (Disclosure - I’ve been happily using the 2P and just picked up the 1P. I expect both to last for many seasons!)
I have the X-Mid 1P and you can stake out the ends and sides more. There are loops already there, you just need to tie on the cordage. My recommendation for anyone who buys the X-Mid is to replace the tie out cordage with longer lines. It makes setting up easier and you can use better reflective cord (just a personal preference). I routinely stake out the ends just for better airflow.
the difficulty he's having with xmid is actually a benefit. you have the ability to customize air flow, and accommodate for uneven ground. but just like any tool you have to learn how to use it.

On these cold winter nights I find the frozen condensation on single wall tents a real pain to deal with. I’ve decided that my 6 moon design solo is on the shelf until around April here in The Virginia mountains. I do pay a weight penalty with my budget 2 wall, 2 person tent but my dog and I are much more comfortable at night. And the extra room is nice on the long winter nights.
Great video and break down of each tent! Super informative. You're the third one I've heard that digs the 6 Moons Designs Lunar Solo. Jeremiah Stringer and Huck Outdoors (affiliate) also have it and love it. I'll keep it in mind if I ever snag a single tent. I personally go with a 2p even when solo but I'd entertain saving weight for sure!

I've been in the market for a sub-2 pound tent for a long time and I somehow lucked out into a Mountain Hardwear 1-person tent on sale for about $200 total shipped, including the added footprint. Totally stoked on it (the Nimbus UL-1), though it retails at $350 so would be over $400 shipped with the footprint.. definitely would be beyond my budget. Cool to see there are some options out there that don't require lucking into a sale like that.
I ordered a Gatewood cape when they first came available and wasn't impressed. I returned it to their offices in beaverton Oregon and although they were easy to work with...I came to understand their products are made overseas. I was a bit disappointed they were designed in the USA yet made elsewhere. Has that changed?
I second the luner solo, i've never used a ground sheet and don't go out of my way to treat it nice and it has held up excellent. it also holds good in high wind situations with the tie outs or it will be noisy, moisture have not been a problem as long as you pitch it correctly and be mindful where you pitch the tent. overall best bang for your money.
There are two other tents that spring to mind. The Gossamer Gear 'The One' which meets all the criteria here, and the SMD Skyscape series (which miss, barely, one direction or the other depending on version). The Scout version is 40oz but is currently only $130 (holiday sale, normally $160) for a very durable sil-poly tent with MASSIVE ventilation, two doors, two vestibules, and is really long. The same attributes apply to the Trekker, but this one is currently $229 (holiday sale, normally $270) but only weighs 28oz. I had an older version and it was phenomenal (and particularly well suited to very tall folks). As another option, which IS truly ultralight, the Deschutes Tarp when combined with the Serenity Net Tent gets you what amounts to a double-wall tent and that meets all your criteria.
Couldn’t pay me to sleep in that MSR one man lol, seems like those msr tents kinda defeat the purpose if you have to carry a tarp anyways. Great reviews though I bought a tape tent rainbow two, your review pushed me over the edge on it lol. Trying it out tonight for the first time

It’s almost identical to the Lunar Solo, it’s cheaper & comes with stakes but there is no factory seam seal option. I don’t know if I got lucky but the quality is surprisingly good, xpac reinforced tie out points, YKK zipper and the stitching is really neat. The biggest difference as far as I can see is the SMD is silpoly vs silnylon for the Lanshan, I think the latter is stronger but stretches more when wet.
I got mine through the Mier website. But I did hear they were hard to come by. Also the Lanshan is double wall so condensation is less of a problem. I love mine. My favorite budget tent so far.
Thanks for highlighting the two tents that were my second choices. My first choice when I plugged in the weights, was just too heavy. I'm leaning heavily toward Six Moon but one size up for the dog factor. The only thing I don't like is the bottom edges being 6" above ground; seems drafty. Nevertheless, seeing it set up is pushing me in that direction. Thanks again!
I hike with my dog and 6 moon solo. Now he is a 20 lb terrier, but there is nice dog space in the corner of the triangle and I think a larger dog could cope (up to maybe 50 lbs or so). And I’m 6’4.
It is a possibility to drop the trekking pole a little bit to bring down that door to create less draft. But, that being said I’ve never had any issues with being being too drafty

Admiring your on-point tent pitching skills! I've used high end 4 season stuff (Rab Ascent bivi or Macpac Microlight tent) to this point, but will be trying my new 3-season Lanshan 2 this year, once the law allows.
@@outdoorthorbackpacking here in the UK it has been illegal to camp overnight since January. We should be back out there from next month. I had a big winter trip planned that was a no-go: but as they say, the mountains are still there.
Should check out the 3F UL lanshan 1(double wall) and 1 pro (single wall). They're a bit lower in cost on AliExpress but shipping takes a while. They also updated the double wall version to have the same dimensions as the pro.

A few considerations I can think of as ideas: Comfort (shoulders, back, back sweat), durability, convenience/packability, cost/value, materials used, how wet will they get in a down-pour (pack rain covers may not always work?), ability to customize or not, are any parts easily replacable (example: hip belt), various features and "bells and whistles" (and are they worth it), vendor guarantees/warranties. Could span over multiple videos.
the xmid isn't difficult to setup. i get a perfect pitch every time. Most people try to eyeball the setup. There are more precise ways to stake out the four corners. like all things, technique is important. Also i never have a problem with sagging vestibules. again technique is important.
Thanks for that solid review. could I ask about the stitching on the six moons lunar solo. Looking for something light for more multi day hikes. However I ve seen some comments about stitch quality and durability on the six moons. just missed the drop on the x mid looks really good ATB mate simon
“Budget” would indicate a thought out approach, some amount of looking at options, considering value to the consumer with cost to the consumer. @@outdoorthorbackpacking It's actually more now. When I bought mine last year it came with 8 shepherd hooks and was $20 US less than it is now. The problem here in Canada is the tent comes from Vietnam, and so there are multiple boarder fees, because the tent arrives in the US first. It was still worth it for me, and I know that Canadians that have purchased it are really happy with the tent, regardless of the price.
I’m doing research on a 1person tent to purchase in the near future, and have zeroed in on the Durston and Lunar Solo. I like the extra floor space of the SMD, but it’s so humid where I live, I don’t love the idea of single wall. The Durston double wall and big vestibules are appealing. If the inner were a few inches wider, it would be a no brainer, but 28” is pretty narrow. At least there’s the option of removing the netting, and sitting under just the tarp to wait out a storm with the Durston. Your review matches my likes and concerns. But, being in Utah you probably don’t have the condensation issues I would in VA. If heavy condensation were an issue all the time, would you still prefer the SMD?
@@jonsanford2515 You know I think you would be happy with either tent! But you’re going have plenty of room in the lunar solo if you decide on that. If you’re not too concerned about weight you could check out the xmid 2p as well

Thanks for your thoughts. I’m not overly concerned with weight, but the Durston 2p is a little more than I care to spend. I’ve read that Durston is considering making a 1.5p. It would either be a modified 1p with a wider inner, or a shrunk down 2p that would fit a person and a dog without as much extra space as the 2p. That seems like it would be perfect for what I’m looking for. If I decide to go for the Durston 1 or the lunar solo, I’ll do if through your affiliate link.
The 3F UL GEAR Lanshan 1 pro cost me less than 110$ and it worth every penny I paid for it. Basically this is a clone of Lunar solo, and I don't see any drawbacks: the quality is very good. Also the Gossamer Gear The One is a great tent. Maybe not so budget (299$), but it should be cheaper on sale.
Except it isn't. There are plenty of other options in that weight class for half of the price if people are willing to do some research and import from overseas. For that matter, I have a 10 ounce tent that cost me $30. You are doing exactly what the video accuses others of--gatekeeping the backpacking world as some sort elite sport that only people with a lot of money can enjoy. Which is simply untrue and perpetuated by this myth that you have to spend $250 to get quality items. It's why I commented in the first place, downvoted the video, and told UA-cam never to recommend the channel tome again.

I have 2 Lanshans, paid less than $100 canadian for each, 1 kilo each, waterproof out of the bag. They are awesome.

The tent is from China. The big UA-camrs don't make any money doing reviews on theseproducts, as they would with American companies.

Yes it’s my year round go to tent. Winter camping and all. I make up for the airiness with an extra warm sleeping set up.

You can pull the prussic knot up to the apex of the tent, by turning doors of the tent inside, leaves tons of air space.

A few considerations I can think of as ideas: Comfort (shoulders, back, back sweat), durability, convenience/packability, cost/value, materials used, how wet will they get in a down-pour (pack rain covers may not always work?), ability to customize or not, are any parts easily replacable (example: hip belt), various features and "bells and whistles" (and are they worth it), vendor guarantees/warranties. Could span over multiple videos.

the xmid isn't difficult to setup. i get a perfect pitch every time. Most people try to eyeball the setup. There are more precise ways to stake out the four corners. like all things, technique is important. Also i never have a problem with sagging vestibules. again technique is important.
Lanshan 1 pro is the best budget tent atm.
Thanks for that solid review. could I ask about the stitching on the six moons lunar solo. Looking for something light for more multi day hikes. However I ve seen some comments about stitch quality and durability on the six moons.

“Budget” would indicate a thought out approach, some amount of looking at options, considering value to the consumer with cost to the consumer. There is a difference between “less expensive” and “cheap”. Cheap has the odor of poor quality. Less expensive may - or may not - have that odor.

@@outdoorthorbackpacking It's actually more now. When I bought mine last year it came with 8 shepherd hooks and was $20 US less than it is now. The problem here in Canada is the tent comes from Vietnam, and so there are multiple boarder fees, because the tent arrives in the US first. It was still worth it for me, and I know that Canadians that have purchased it are really happy with the tent, regardless of the price.

I’m doing research on a 1person tent to purchase in the near future, and have zeroed in on the Durston and Lunar Solo.
I like the extra floor space of the SMD, but it’s so humid where I live, I don’t love the idea of single wall. The Durston double wall and big vestibules are appealing. If the inner were a few inches wider, it would be a no brainer, but 28” is pretty narrow. At least there’s the option of removing the netting, and sitting under just the tarp to wait out a storm with the Durston.
Your review matches my likes and concerns. But, being in Utah you probably don’t have the condensation issues I would in VA. If heavy condensation were an issue all the time, would you still prefer the SMD?
Personally, I like the lunar solo for a 1p shelter. That being said humidity as a whole different factor your overall experience. How tall are you?

@@jonsanford2515 You know I think you would be happy with either tent! But you’re going have plenty of room in the lunar solo if you decide on that. If you’re not too concerned about weight you could check out the xmid 2p as well

Thanks for your thoughts. I’m not overly concerned with weight, but the Durston 2p is a little more than I care to spend.
I’ve read that Durston is considering making a 1.5p. It would either be a modified 1p with a wider inner, or a shrunk down 2p that would fit a person and a dog without as much extra space as the 2p. That seems like it would be perfect for what I’m looking for.

The 3F UL GEAR Lanshan 1 pro cost me less than 110$ and it worth every penny I paid for it. Basically this is a clone of Lunar solo, and I don't see any drawbacks: the quality is very good.
Also the Gossamer Gear The One is a great tent. Maybe not so budget (299$), but it should be cheaper on sale.

Except it isn't. There are plenty of other options in that weight class for half of the price if people are willing to do some research and import from overseas. For that matter, I have a 10 ounce tent that cost me $30. You are doing exactly what the video accuses others of--gatekeeping the backpacking world as some sort elite sport that only people with a lot of money can enjoy. Which is simply untrue and perpetuated by this myth that you have to spend $250 to get quality items. It's why I commented in the first place, downvoted the video, and told UA-cam never to recommend the channel tome again.
