How To Make Basic Damascus Steel
Переглядів 3,6 тис.4 роки тому
This is a how to video on making simple damascus steel. By alternating layers of steel a damascus pattern is created at forge welding temperature. This pattern can be called wood grain damascus or random pattern damascus. There are many ways to make steel but this is how I do it. You'll hear early in the video that I mistakenly start calling the 1075 steel 1080 steel. Normally I do use 1080 but...

An example of how easily 52100 steel resharpens after loosing its edge. No knife lasts forever. But how easily can a customer resharpen it?
Domed Pin Tutorial in Honor of Tim Hancock
Переглядів 2,2 тис.5 років тому
When Tim Hancock passed away I was in the middle of making a Dog Bone Dagger. Tim was famous for these daggers and taught me everything I know about making them. In honor of Tim, I made this video as a tribute to him as I put the final pin in this knife.

Awesome tutorial! Can i ask wich kind of torch did you use?
I remember when you posted this video, and UA-cam magically brought it back in my feed. Testing an already broken blade because it's what he saw his dad doing... Great example!
How long do you keep it in the jaws before taking it out and tempering it?
Nice work.
Well Josh life sure has changed for you over the last few years since putting this video out. Super stoked for you and all your success and hopefully 2024 is your biggest year yet. I really enjoy seeing these old videos of tips and tricks.
"Basic " .... I came away from this video with the basics. Basically I need $10,000 worth of machinery plus 3 or 4 years experience in blacksmithing . to make Damascus . OK.... It,s a place to start I suppose.
Damascus steel actually isn't all that strong. The true purpose of damascus is a form of art and creativity, where the metallurgy of it only includes standard carbon steel. In comparison to other low alloy steels tool steels and high alloy steels, the ratings of hardness, toughness, and corrosion resistance of Damascus steel are low.
Interesting. Looks like a cool stiletto
Josh, great video - keep up the quality work! I’d love to see a dedicated video on that rolling mill with some close-up pictures of the motor transmission/gearbox in some rough sizes !
🍻
Mice
Just found your channel! Thank you for mentioning some of my heroes so many younger guys don’t know about. Great video!
Good work Josh. I wonder if you could drop the annoying loud music. I don't care for the scratchy music so I mute the video but then you come along and start talking. I enjoy metal working and you are doing some cool stuff but I don't understand why it is so important for you to blast my ears with loud music. If I wanted to listen to music I would just tune in to a radio station. Thanks for the rolling mill demonstration.
It's a shame that those rolling mills/twisting machines aren't being made anymore. I want one. That thing is friggin' awesome!
This a great and clear instruction for people who want to make Damascus, without all the smoke and mirrors and showmanship. Thanks man , this really helped me along.
Nice vid! Where can you get a new rolling mill nowadays?
This is just brilliant. I haven't been making knives for all too long but even i managed to straighten two bananas within minutes. Thank you so much
need more of these!
Thank You Sir for sharing your knowledge and Honoring Tim!
awesome! I'd love to see some more details about the roller mill. I'm hoping to build one similar
Awesome work and thanks for sharing. So glad I found y'all on Instagram!
I tried this on a warped 2 mm 1084 filleting knife. The blade warped in quenching and had been tempered so was very springy. This method worked with MAP gas (equivalent) torch - took it slow, kept sanding to keep eye on the colors. Trial, without error. Brilliant. Thanks for the lesson.
Hey all. Looking to purchase a rolling mill for my San mai and damascus. Can anyone make some recommendations? I'm new to them and haven't had any luck finding anything yet. Thanks!
Great tip on getting the center not to tear
Good video this is gold thanks .
Love the book got it at Travis hammer in.
Love your work Sir! To what grit do you sand and polish Damascus before etching? Is it higher polish for higher layer counts?
Now that's lit
great video what psi do you run your forge at when forge welding damascus ? im new to this but love knife making and forging im hooked i cant wait to make a forge press this coming year its alot of work forging a damascus billit by hand with just a hammer
I recently purchased a rolling mill from a guy in Apache Oklahoma. It has been a game changer. Love it
Lol. Did not realize i was on my wifes profile. Jason Wilson
Does the guy make them or was it just the one? We want one too!
Any reason you went with a structured abrasive belt as opposed to a typical abrasive belt? More uniform finish maybe?
I’m gunna have to try leaving the mill scale on with the next billet- that would be awesome if I could skip grinding all that steel before welding
Ive been a knife maker for around 5 years now, bonds creek knives, and I think its worth saying a lot of us younger makers see you as a legend as you saw Tim. Funny how the world works. Thank you for the lesson. I’m about start my first frame tang and I was a little lost on how to do the domed pins.
Insane!
So cool to watch you work & see dad's big green monster power hammer behind you. Glad you got it up and running! You're a stud dude!
Had a bad bow in a chef knife and I couldn’t get it out after quench or with over clamping during the two temper cycles... also tried the vice-3 pin approach for days...nothing... watched this video and tried it... Amazing... just a spot of heat near the spine and a bit of pulling, straight as an arrow!! Thanks for sharing !! Life saver!! Looking forward to next July’s hammer in !!
Great video and insight! All your videos are awesome!
Great video. Now I need a rolling mill....lol
Would be super cool if you did a more independent video about the rolling mill, it would a really cool project to make my own!
i built/am building my own rolling mill atm, it dosent have a thickness guage though its just a 20 ton press jack that i jack down a jack or 2 a pass(each jack is about 1/3 of a mm), then 2 roller plates that fit in where the press plates used to go and a drill running into a 45 tooth worm drive i dont have a lathe (or want to try and harden cylinders) so i got local metal shop to make the rollers for me, 12cm of mine is flat then other half has a 5 cm wide grove sloping to 2.5mm deep next to a 2mm high 4mm wide v ridge in middle other one is a 4cm wide groove thats 2mm deep on one side and wheel diameter on other with the top wheel only having a 2mm high 3mm wide at base ridge 8mm from edge so i can roll in basic blade bevel & fullers on various sword styles easily i live in suburbia so i try to keep hammering to a minimum, its nice and quite as well as being fast, although maybe my gearing is to high mine seems to turn a lot slower than most, u could probably use a 30 tooth gear and drill would have no problem, its something i plan to test some time, but so far its been pretty nice, i had to modify drill to have its forwards & back on a much larger lever and the trigger i hooked up to a foot pedal just with a few pullys some rope spring ect, some day ill pull drill appart and extend trigger wires put trigger under pedal just so its a bit less boddgy/its my next priority thing to fix up now its actually running then wiring forward back onto a switch or another foot pedal, then the gearing maybe :P but even only 1/2 finished, its great
Would love to see you build the folder with your piece of Damascus.
Great video!!
That's awesome 👍 love the videos keep them coming
Great to see you posting back on UA-cam!
