Darby with dead pigeon
I’m wanting Darby in motion when I toss the dead pigeon. I want her reaction be to hup (sit) on the toss without me giving a command. The quick movement, running around , isn’t the priority. The hup on the toss is. I’m also working on her delivery. If she drops the bird, I will not fuss at her. But when I give a Peep in the whistle, she hups and holds the bird. Nice delivery

This drill was to see if Darby would pay attention in a new location. Also she is consistently hupping when I toss a bumper. The “hold” will clean up but not concerned right now. I like the reaction to hup on a bumper in the air and be patient until sent

I call Birdie to me and toss a bumper while she is in motion. I want her to stop when I toss the bumper. Wait until I send for the retrieve. Just a fun drill. Also add coming to heel before sending. Will add gunshot and pigeons to the drill as well progress

I’m working on a few things currently with Darby. I would like for her to Hup (spaniel language for sit) before I toss the bumper. I would also like for her to hold the bumper until I take it from her. She is starting to offer a Hup before I toss a bumper. If she doesn’t, I wait until she hups and I then toss the bumper immediately. As she gets better, I will add duration before I toss the bump...
Darby getting to chase pigeons.

I like to give pups a lot of flyer pigeons being hand released. I let them chase as much as they want. But when they come back, I have another bird for them. As they start back, I can add a recall whistle. After a few days of this, I can add a clip wing pigeon for the reward in not chasing the flyers. High drive dogs quickly learn how to get the clip wing bird.

Birdie has come a long way. We have progressed slowly and she is getting cleaner on her delivery . The bumpers were tossed out while she was in her crate. she knows the location and will run to the spot to get a bumper. Here deliver to the stand and sit while continuing to hold bumper is a cool part of the progression
Darby learning placeboard and treats 8 months old

For several reasons, this was the first time either Darby doing this drill. Typically this would be done early in the pups life. This video shows how I quietly get the dog to do what I want which is to get on placeboard and look at me. As she offered a sit action, I started holding out the reward until she sat. I walk away to get her off the placeboard and then reward her when she gets back on....
A drill I like to do practicing honoring another dog.

This is a drill I do since I have multiple dogs. If you only have 1 dog , find a friend with a dog that can train with you. You handle your dog and friend will handle their dog. Spread the dogs a distance apart and reduce temptation to run in on the others retrieve. Where one tosses the bumper is important. Start wide and each dog on that side gets the retrieve. Gradually bring the tosses more ...
Darby and pigeons

This is a fun exercise with any age dog. The pup learns to come back and I have another bird. I will eventually give a clip wing pigeon to retrieve as a reward. This also introduces the pup to me being important because I have the birds. Also this drill will be something I build on. It also has the pup/dog responding to my whistle or verbal command. I can control the response by having birds. I...

Great video! I just subscribed. We have a similar channel if you want to check it out, "Hunt and Gather with the Chatters". Thanks!
Very difficult to hunt..
What an adorable and smart baby
thank you. She's learning skills and polishing them
Bad training way do you do this?????
please explain...
At that age (with very little training) my springer made a nice delivery to hand, both dummies and game. I thought that labs are supposed to be natural retrievers. 😯
When I raise a springer pup, it is doing a nice job by this age. This is an entirely different scenario She would chase and carry bumpers in her previous yard but the owner didn't develop a nice delivery. Here, she is getting used to me and the environment. She looks a little uncertain as to what to do. I will post videos of the progress. I bet she will be fine in a short time. ALSO, there are general comments about breeds but specific dogs might require more attention than others. Delivery to hand is a developed skill more so than a natural skill.
@@Nottinghamkennels I agree that delivery to hand is a developed skill. I've seen your other videos and I know that your springers are outstanding examples of their breed. You certainly know how to train gundogs. So I was thinking that this lab must be your client's dog. Actually I'm in the process of choosing my next gundog. Due to the fact that I like waterfowling (also during the cold season) I've been considering a retriever. Something more weatherproof and calm than my springer has been. But when I saw this young lab I thought maybe I should stick to the springer spaniel.
So cuteeeeeee
Tim, quick question. Why do you use fetch over the dogs name or “get out” which I have often read in books as well. Does it come down to personal preference, or does fetch communicate something more to the dog that you have been working on? Thanks in advance!
I use Fetch with Mr Tom because he responded better to Fetch than his name. My Spaniels go on their name so using Fetch doesn't confuse anyone if working them together. Sorry for the delayed reply.
Terrible dog work by Spaniels in the US these dog wouldn’t make it in to Novice in the uk
Please explain the "terrible dog work". I have seen plenty of spaniel work in videos from the UK that wouldn't make it in the US either. different games.
Musky bait?
We used raw grab hooks with fluorescent orange tape wrapped around the hook shank, and had some "encouragers' rocking the water downstream to keep them coming your way. Usually kids for that. West Sugarloaf Creek near Lead Hill, Ark. is one place we'd go there or Jimmy's Creek off of the Bull Shoals Lake there in Arkansas.
Wow, Good for you for not losing your patience! I love your videos keep them coming!
I enjoy your videos! Glad I got to meet ya with Ken at the shoot for bass pro
I know I’m a little late but I just saw this video and it helped me so much! Thank you!

Very Good *Video* Congratulations Fisherman! Have a great week. Hugs and good fishing.👍🎣🐠
Great therapy is right! How relaxing that must have been! Awesome day on the creek! You guys brought us through the whole process of getting the bait to catching the fish! Excellent job. Tight lines from R & J Bass Fishing
R & J BASS FISHING CHANNEL thank you! Can’t get stories like this sitting at home! Got to make it happen!
Great video.. Those creek smallies sure are pretty!
Nathan W. Thanks! Used iMovie on phone to put the clips together. Shows a typical trip. The sun was “right” to get some great pics showing the colors.
I thought noise was not allowed? at the start the dog got yappy.
but otherwise great job keep it up should be good hunting buddy
The dog did get a little yappy at the beginning. Noisy dogs usually do not place. This dog did not place. Not my dog. This dog previously had earned its AFC title and probably was quiet on the days he placed.
Can I ask were this trial was wat state in america
Darren Martin this trial was in Kansas. In the western part of the state.
Timothy Baker I was in Colorado 2 years ago I came from ireland and stayed a week with a friend who trains springers it looks like the place he took me shooting
Cool. Does your friend have a kennel and raise puppies? I may know him.
Timothy Baker yeah his name is lynn
I know him. Do you have terriers like him?
The Dog is typically disqualified if it fails the retrieve. If I'm not mistaken that is Mr Morgan Haglin judging, a very good judge and professional trainer. At the end of the video you will hear Morgan say, the bird fell down a hole, so in that case the dog was allowed to hunt on.
Correct. Failure to make a retrieve is typically a disqualification. However, this bird hit the ground and fell into a hole. The dog went to the spot and tried to get into the hole to get the bird. Being a reasonable judge, Morgan checked the situation, then after discussing with co-judge, they carried on. I don't think the dog placed in the trial but it wasn't because of this particular retrieve issue.
He can fish but doesn't fish streams. Had light line and I know where the obstacles are, most folks reel in too much line which makes landing the fish awkward. Stream is in SW Missouri.
In SW Missouri.
Where in the ozarks are you?
Awesome! Thank you Tim Baker!
Thanks
do they get point deduction if they don't find the bird? i couldn't tell if she/he found it on the first round.
Awesome!
