Demystifying Grad School Funding: What You Need to Know
Thank you 🙏 I truly deeply appreciate your video. I've just graduated with an Msc. and I want to get into PhD given that my dream job is to be a professor. The application process is weird for me and overwhelming but this video helped to erase some confusion. Thanks again!
Thank you your explanations. It helped me look for ways to find my potential supervisor.
I appreciate the work you’re putting in, thank you. I was able to get into BI Development and we’re in the process of replicating Qlik reports over to PBI. I’ve been able to use Vega-lite through the deneb viz.
I wrote an email with your template to a past professor and they were elated :) Thank you!
Great news! Good luck with your application 🤞
Hello Dr Padila. This is an excellent series on data visualization. Where can i get a more comprehensive online training course? Do you offer one?
Thank you for the kind words. While I don’t currently offer one, I recommend checking out a course by my colleague and friend, Dr. Enrico Bertini, which starts on January 4th. There are other asynchronous courses that I could recommend as well if you prefer that format. Here's the link for more details: maven.com/p/1ae5a5/rhet-vis-course-preview-and-q-a?
@@DrDataVIS Thank you so much. I will certainly look into this.

Thank you for mentioning that I might not have discovered a gap. I was racking my brain over that.
Prudence... I chose selling away B because stock A has shown better growth from 2010 going from $10 to $25..... So it just made sense to me ...selling A a felt like a gut punch.....why would I sell a clear winner today where as stock B is volatile. Stock A represents consistent growth. You don't penalize the good kid because of the bad kid
Very insightful, Thanks alot
The tooltip might seem like such a minor advantage but it adds clarity and depth to complex visualization.
Thank you for the support. I created my sop in the format you described in the video. Now waiting for the result next year early February. 😊
Hello! First of all, Merry Christmas! I just wanted to come by to say thank you. I don’t know if you remember my case, but I wrote a message about the professor who never answered me after the pre-interview (she still hasn’t 🤣, and I haven’t sent anything else either). You were so attentive to me and gave me the advice to apply anyway, and I did. Last week, the director of the program sent me an email saying that all the faculty were impressed with my application, and he selected me for the next interview. Maybe, if I hadn’t listened to you and taken a chance despite the “ghosting,” I wouldn’t have done it. Thank you. Now, I’m doing my best to prepare for this interview. Know that your work here is valuable. All the best to you, and I’ll keep you updated with any news about it. 🙏
Congratulations!!! That is great news. Please keep me updated on your process. Good luck with your interview!!
Thanks a lot mam, Would you please share me an email format for doing bachelor degree(Csc),, As i don't have any research or a project so i can't write it ,, please mam.
thank you for this 😇
Hi Dr. Padilla, can you advise on steps to take to transition from Software Engineer to a top CS PhD program? I have no research experience and I attended a so-called "no-name" college for undergrad in CS. I think my situation is a little niche so perhaps making a video on this wouldn't be worth it? Based off your other videos, I know I should contact professors to get research experience at their labs, but I know these are extremely difficult to get in and I will need to build my profile up to a level where I can get hired into these labs as a research assistant. Then I can stay on for a few years before I eventually apply for a PhD program. To raise my profile so professors I contact ignore my undergrad institution and GPA, I watched your video "How to Contact a Professor for PhD Opportunities" and came up with these items to showcase my potential for research. I plan to complete over the next 2-3 years: 1. Rebuild my mathematical foundation by going through Math Academy and AOPS(art of problem solving) book series. I will build up to a point where I can study and understand AI research papers. 2. Reproduce multiple research papers authored by the professors I want to contact. Write about them, and build a project based on my understanding. I have already begun working on #1 during my spare time before/after work. I do actually look forward to the items and some of them I have been looking forward to for a few years now. They aren't just checklists. I look forward to them regardless of whether or not I get into a top PhD program. I would appreciate any pointers I can get from you.
Thank you soo much, your videos are very helpful for my applications. Please continue to do more 🥰
It would be helpful if you can guide us on government scholarships options and university research scholarships, thank youuuu
You are an amazing human being!
How closely do their research interests need to align to mine? Does it need to be an exact match?

Thank you ma'am. Love your content!

Could you please talk about specifically how to get into these universities from a lower ranking universities? What have you seen in the past that has worked for other students?
Love your videos. Please post the video on curating online programs especially on platforms like X when I also want to share my Christian faith
Great point about “taking your work with you”! I didn’t really think of it like that before. And the fact that you have more flexibility in who you work with. Sometimes I take these things for granted.
Hello Dr. Padilla, I have no publication and my only research experience was during my undergraduate project but I’m interested in applying for a PhD program. As a Professor yourself, would you be willing to work with any student similar to myself? I want to know if I stand a chance for a PhD program
Blue and green are reversed in the equation.
I have no publications and not the best grades - even coming from a masters. This cycle will be interesting because I’m applying with funding (was just awarded a fellowship). Don’t know how much this helps.
This is a great video! I have a few questions: 1. I am currently in high school and want to pursue further education, I have also gotten enough credits to graduate with my bachelor's in 2 years. Is it worth doing that or double majoring and staying at an undergraduate program for 4 years? 2. How do you build connections with professors far away? I want to be at one of the top Ph.D programs but connecting with professors seems like a challenge any tips?
These are all excellent questions, and the fact that you’re thinking them is actually a good sign-it shows you’re deeply considering your next steps. Here are some thoughts to help guide you: One potential path is to graduate with your bachelor’s degree and then volunteer in a research lab or pursue post-baccalaureate positions. You don’t need to be an active student to volunteer in a research lab. It’s often easier to start working in a lab while you’re still a student, but you can continue to do so after completing your undergraduate degree. If you’re already working in a lab and a post-bac option becomes available, that’s an ideal scenario. Many programs have opportunities for recent graduates, like lab manager roles or post-bac research positions, which can significantly help your career. If you’re considering this route, try to prioritize a larger lab with existing lab managers, as it’s more likely they’ll have a role available for you after graduation. Another option is to stay longer and pursue a second major. The same advice applies here: aim to work in labs while pursuing your additional major. Depending on your field, a second major can be very beneficial. For example, if you’re studying sociology, adding a second major in quantitative statistics could set you apart from other candidates. However, this varies by discipline, so it’s worth considering how the second major aligns with your long-term goals. As for making connections with professors, I should probably create a whole video on that topic! For now, my top advice is to take classes with professors whose research interests you. Do well in their class, and then ask if they have any volunteer research positions available. Most professors are hesitant to take on undergraduate students who haven’t taken their class, but if that’s not an option, the key is crafting a compelling introduction email. In your email, mention that you’ve reviewed their website, explored their materials, and read several of their papers. Show genuine interest in their research and highlight any relevant skills you could bring to their lab. I’ll work on a detailed video about how to make connections with professors and share tips on writing that first email. I’ll link to it here once it’s done. Stay tuned!
@@DrDataVIS Thank you very much for the detailed response! I appreciate it a lot.
Thank you very much Dr. Padilla.
Thankyou for the information dear Padilla, but the point on discontinuing phD and mastering out is for US or around world?
Thanku mam , Is it necessary to attach a research proposal in my first mail? I am mailing without a research proposal.
It's sucha realistic and thorough vedio. But I've a question, as you mentioned in the vedio, that we should ask professor if he is accepting students or not, that's essentially cold emailing, but if phd positions are opened in their lab, and we want to get acceptance from the professor before applying, then should we still ask for the vacant position or what? I'd be much obliged, if you answer that! Thank you!!
An Amazing piece. Thank you, look forward to implementing this.
@@ademolaakoredeadejare2708 I’m glad this was useful!
Thank you
Thank you a lot for useful information🍀🍀🍀
Do you have email where we can communicate? I would need your guidance
This is a great alternative that i didn't think of. Thank you for demonstrating. For such situation, I generally used dynamic sunburst chart from tableau to present information in layers. I felt that makes the chart interactive and informative if formatted correctly.
Thank you for these videos
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I think the general advice is good, but I do not think candidates should focus too much on their supervisor's work. Mainly, because at the end of the day, the candidate will be working on his own original contribution to the field of study. A Phd. is mostly about the candidate's work, not on the supervisor's one. Thank you.
Thank you for this video! I'm sure these tips will be very useful in my application journey.
What about sankey diagrams?
Hi I am in my late thirties and a CAM practitioner with 10 yrs of experience. Currently doing masters in psychology from SNHU online. It is research oriented and loved it. Thinking of applying to phD after completing my masters. Do you think age could prove the effort and time invested go waste?not enough chances for a fresh start of profession? In academia or industry ? Thankyou Dr padilla for your insightful video
Can i just send an email regarding my topics and how it is aligned with the professor research? Thn later if he demands i can send the CV/Resume and a simple paper?
That's an insightful video, Professor. I have got most of my queries cleared through this video. Thank you so much, Professor. I just want to ask one more thing that how the subject of the email should be written which will be precise for the Professor to open it?
That's a great question. From skimming the emails I've received, I don't see much variation in the subject lines. It doesn’t seem to affect whether I decide to open them or not. I’ll reach out to other professors I know to see if they have any thoughts on this.
Thank you so much Professor for your guidance. If you get to know any more information on this, please do share.
Thanks for the video, it was really helpful! I would like to ask you if you could deepen about the application to PhD projects which are not specifically connected to a specific supervisor. In this case, how should we proceed to write the statement of purpose if we only know the research area but not a specific research project? Thank you again! I really enjoy your contents!
If you’re unsure about the specific projects or funding the professor is currently working on, it’s best to focus on framing your previous experiences and education in a way that supports the general aims of their lab. Highlight how your past work aligns with the professor’s previous publications and research themes. Additionally, mention a few unique aspects of your background or expertise that could introduce fresh perspectives or ideas to their lab. Even if they are not immediately interested in these new areas, demonstrating your ability to contribute to their ongoing work while potentially expanding into new directions can make you stand out. The goal is to position yourself as a valuable asset to the group. I hope that helps!
Hi Dr. Lace! I enjoyed this very much. Could you please make a video on how to write a diversity essay on this subject matter?
Your videos have been an absolute game-changer for me-thank you sincerely for creating and sharing these resources. If a student is certain they want to work with a specific professor due to the perfect alignment of their research goals, how can they express this professionally in their interaction? Additionally, what steps can they take to maximize their chances of securing a position in the professor’s lab without appearing overly intense or limiting their options?
Thanks so much for the kind words! I'm so glad these videos are helpful. Per your question: Beyond simply stating your interests, which most other candidates will also do, consider taking steps to demonstrate your commitment through action. For example, you could offer to volunteer in the lab without pay, showing a level of dedication that sets you apart as exceptionally motivated. Alternatively, you might ask the advisor if they would be willing to serve on your undergraduate thesis or master’s committee, further demonstrating your interest in collaboration. If you’re a U.S. citizen, you could also express your intention to apply for an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) prior to applying, highlighting your willingness to secure funding to join their lab. If you apply to the GRFP before starting the program, you gain an additional opportunity to apply later, allowing for two attempts instead of just one. These proactive approaches go beyond what most applicants do and clearly communicate your commitment and enthusiasm. Good luck!
Thanks for all this information I sincerely appreciate you. Your channel has changed the landscape of my application
I am so glad they are helping! Please let me know if there are other topics you would like me to cover.
Thank you so much for this new insight in emailing professor particularly when people can easily use ChatGpt nowadays. If i may ask, if there is no response from the professor for about 1 month, is it fine to send another email to the same professor, with different and (maybe) more interested email? Or can i send email again but this time i just want to ask some questions about his/her research to start the conversation? Thank you
