    My grandmother, when pressing a seam, like on pant inseams, with the seam side up, would place strips of heavy brown paper sacks between the seam and the fabric beneath. This prevented the seam fabric from making an impression on the main fabric and prevented shine. She also “set” press lines by spraying lightly first with white vinegar. These were old-timey ways of doing things on the cheap. She did laundry for the railroad men until she had enough money to buy and electric stove.

    Thank you for sharing your process. I used to love more challenging projects but I’m finding that I now prefer simpler projects that still give a wow factor and this pattern fits that preference for me perfectly. I’m inspired and will be getting this pattern and some linen to create one for my wardrobe as well. ❤

  •  10 днів тому

    Hi, Cleo! Thanks so much for sharing the process! You did such an amazing job! I will definitely follow your video for instructions! Just one question: what were your actual bust & waist measurements? I’m having a hard time choosing the right size. In the real size measurements I’m size 14. I’m thinking about choosing a 10 or a 12 in the finished garment measurement but I’m not sure yet.

    • @cleow
      @cleow 9 днів тому

      Great question! My measurements can fluctuate so at that time they were closer to 36 bust and about 30 waist. I know my shape tends to be pear shaped, smaller on top, so I skewed towards that. I hope this helps, my memory is a bit foggy on the actual numbers now! 😅💜

    I miss my mom so much she was the fairy with magical hands in sowing she was able to sow a coat in under 3 hours 3 dresses for X-mas in an afternoon in velvet and laces do the entire houses curtains in no time... bed covers, pants etc... and the way people nowadays sow is so weird to me cause my mom didn't sow with patterns, she'd take your measurement and do your clothing and fix them on to you like a tailor and 1 hour later... Tadam! skirt and blouse or coat done... as easy as 1,2,3. and why isn't anyone OVERLOCKING their fabrics edges anymore???

    Also, ping pong tables and folding tables are great for pinning quilts and taking the weight of projects you are working with. You don’t want to put too much stress on ur stitches if you let the fabric fall off ur working table/sewing area while creating ur stuff. I had one friend who used her hubby’s pool table with folding boards laid across the felt. They did however later get a divorce so I don’t recommend that one. Small sewing tables are great for assembling small items and quilt blocks, but when ur project grows so should ur working surface so as not to put too much tension/stress on the fabric/thread. Most ppl are using poly/cotton threads these days and polyester just does not have the give that cotton does as a natural fiber.

    You might have already received help, but when I took quilting classes as Quilting by the Lake they did a demonstration of a master quilter one year where she hung her fabric on the wall using a large quilt hanger and proceeded to copy/draw her design from the projector. I would think that would work great for your purposes too. Just draw a chalk in color you need to stand out on background fabric. So if you have black background fabric your film in ur projector would need to be white or fluorescent or something you can see. A lot of kinkos etc will make the overhead transparencies for you. Office Depot etc. it also works for painting and transferring large designs onto big bags, artistic floor rugs for painting or embroidery or latch hook etc. Basically anything you can imagine. You can create large embroidery pieces that way too. Your imagination is your only limitation imo. Hope that helps. In my day we had the audio visual club. Yes. I was clearly a geek. lol. We had to get trained to help our teachers with tvs , projectors, movies, etc. lol. We even made ditto copies of the tests that would be given out! Obviously we had to be trusted not to tell anyone. lol. I hope that’s helps you on ur way. I’ll be sure to check back and see how you progress. Making the overhead copies is not hard tho and you can easily do it yourself. For books I know I will want to use patterns from I take them to kinkos or else I take them apart myself and use a binding machine on them if they are not in a user friendly format. Used to cost about $3 at kinkos, but generally goes by how thick ur book is and which type of binding you want. I prefer the circle holes w spiral binding not the ugly tab looking thing that makes big ugly squares. Yes. I have OCD. lol. This allows you to lay your book out flat to get great images for your film you wanna make to,place on ur overhead projector. You van buy the ugly binding machine cheap on Amazon. The one that makes the pretty holes is more expansive, but imo worth every last penny. It will make ur books harder to find on ur bookshelf if you don’t keep them sorted b craft like I do and if you don’t make a photo tag or label of the front of the book. I do the same thing for my 8 cube storage things Walmart and ikea sell bc I have fluffy dogs who spray glitter fur like confetti so I keep everything else in baskets. Plus, not find of the disarray of seeing it all at once. Cubbies keep me calm. Labels/tags keep me sane and I can find my stuff quickly and take a new pic of my cubby contents if I change it up. Like when I use the yarn or fabric etc. sorry to be so long winded, but I hope it helps you or others.

  • @justtere
    @justtere 2 місяці тому

    16:27 Why would you not want to use it? The width is exactly 5/8", which is incredibly helpful. I also learned that the hole at the end is for it to be used to draw a perfect circle up to six inches (the length of the gauge) which is up to 12". Perfect for making not just circles, but half and quarter circles. Who needs a compass if you have a seam gauge? Most homes of crafters have a seam gauge, but few have compasses handy. Who needs a plate or something similar? I collect trivia in my head so much there's no room for the important stuff. 😂😂

    Very informative video, thank you. My husband cut a few different sizes of dowels in half lengthwise (or just cut enough off so that it can lay flat) for me to use as pressing aids. It's very effective for pressing inside-out tube shapes like sleeves or tie belts. It presses the seam without leaving an imprint on the right side. They are also helpful for hand stitching so you don't catch the opposite side of the sleeve - not something I use all of the time, but it's brilliant for say hand felling a sleeve seam.

    I’ve used dryer sheets to clean light buildup of interfacing/ Stitch Witchery glue off my warm iron.

    When initially acquiring my tools, I got the Tailer’s Ham and Sleeve Roll as a set. Before then, I’d tightly roll up a bath towel and use it for sleeves and the towel draped over a small pillow was used in place of the ham.

    This popped up on my phone this morning! How did Apple know I am beginning a wool coat for the TomKat Stitchery Precious Fabric Sew 2024?? I’ve had a chunk of Pendleton wool for 30 years that I’m cutting into finally. I’ve made several tailored coats and blazers before and enjoy each step of the process. I found that hand tacking with thread was a great way to mark and bound buttonholes and hand stitched ones were a new lesson for me. I’m in my 70’s and love to learn! Thank you for your coat journey and it was a peaceful morning watching along today.
