Try to engage the muscles as if u could push/slide the floor forward under your hand, but without actually moving the hand.

could you do a practice on how to do halasana. I am too stiff to bring my legs to the back and even when I use a chair i can't bring my arms close - they tend to go in a 45 degrees line from my body. thank you
If u r stiff in hamstrings, you can also try bending the legs and taking a version of karnapidasana (keep feet on the chair). For the arms, this is because of tightness in the shoulders. You won’t solve this in Halasana, you need to practice other asanas to help loosen up the tightness. That said, you can place a bolster or a rolled mat so that your elbows touch down on something when the hands are on your back.

Thanks for sharing this interview, I hope we meet one day Stephanie! My story is very similar to yours re: debilitating back pain from a young age (Grade 11 for me), grad school, backbends being the most painful poses….. Iyengar yoga is helping but I haven’t dedicated as much time to my practice as you have so it’s slow. Slow but steady. Grateful the pain is lessening though, over time.
Oh wow, I didn’t realize your history with back pain went that far back Rebecca. We are similar, indeed! It’s interesting because although I do see students who improve relatively fast, that was not my experience, AT ALL. It took me years before I could confidently say I was improving. BUT… I feel strongly that all the work I put in during the years of seemingly little or no progress contributed directly to the massive improvements which came later down the road. I often think back to the analogy of filling up my internal cup with practices. I needed to reach a certain water line (yoga line) before I could start rebuilding/restructuring/transforming myself, from the inside out. Anyway all this to say, please don’t be hard on yourself and please know that your efforts are worthwhile. These things take time. As Patanjali says, consistent practice over long duration - that is the key.
