    Hi your video was very helpful I have been dragon boating for a while, this is my fourth year and my right side is noticeably better than my left. My left I seems to be shoveling in water and I get myself and the person behind me wet even though my left side is much more stronger, my right side far away is much better for Technique. Are there any additional pointers that you can recommend so I can rectify this problem?

    • @dragonboatcoach
      @dragonboatcoach 2 місяці тому

      Thank you for leaving your comment. I think you answered your own question when you say your right side is technically better and your left is stronger. Strength sometimes mean we muscle too much and are not using technique, hence, going too far back and flipping up the water at the exit rather than using the end of the resistance in the stroke (usually not past the hip with the blade mostly straight up and down) to get out of the water. My suggestion is to take note of how far back you go on the right and the position of your blade at that time and transfer this knowledge to your left side. Let me know if this helps!

    Are you using a three zone framework or five? Did you set up your zones off a formula or a tested maximum? The reason I asked is from your voice it sounds like you’re well either way Z2 of 5, which is where I think you’re intending to be (base endurance building). In my experience the formulas underestimate the maximum heart rate of athletes like yourself as we get older. The once popular 220 minus your age would tell me my max heart rate is a number I exceed in training frequently. If you’re using a formula I’m thinking that you might want to test your max weight and set up your zones off the tested max. If my hypotheses are correct you might find you have a little more room in which to work while still in Z2/5 or Z1/3. Abd if so now you have more wiggle room on your SPM. Cheers!

    • @dragonboatcoach
      @dragonboatcoach 9 місяців тому

      Hi! I’d love to know the formula you are referring to as I am not familiar with it by your language. Can you share details with us all?

    • @SettleNow
      @SettleNow 9 місяців тому

      Years ago if you wanted to estimate your max heart rate rather than test yourself you might be told to use 220 minus your age. That formula was so so at best for most people and for active older people could be way off. In my case I’d guess it is off by about by about 23-24 bpm. That’s a big error. If I instead tested it, and also observed my resting heart rate I could then calculate my “heart rate reserve.” Then I can calculate my training zones based on the percentage of the reserve. (Karvonen formula).

    • @dragonboatcoach
      @dragonboatcoach 9 місяців тому

      For those of you interested in The Heart Rate Zone Calculator, this is the one I use as I use a Garmin monitor: Use this an ESTIMATE. Everyone is different so use the zone indicators as a guide but be your own judge. The lower the resting heart rate, the lower the HRZ. The only truly accurate evaluation is a V02Max test. Women: 210 - (1/2 of your age) - (.05 x your body weight) Men: 210 - (1/2 of your age) - (.05 x your body weight) +4 Zone 1: Effort: very easy Target heart rate: 50% - 60% of max heart rate Duration: RPE 15, used in warm up, cool down and active recovery Zone 2: Effort: easy Target heart rate: 60% - 70% of max heart rate Duration: RPE 16+, consider this training for a 2000M race Zone 3: Effort: moderate Target heart rate: 70% - 80% of max heart rate Duration: RPE 17+, consider this a 1000M race Zone 4: Effort: hard Target heart rate: 80% - 90% of max heart rate Duration: RPE 18+, consider this a 500M race Zone 5: Effort: very hard Target heart rate: 90% - 100% of max heart rate Duration: RPE 19+, consider this a 200M race, starts, finishes, powers and turns

    I'm one of the coaches for the Seattle Flying Dragons. I'm also a former Yoga instructor. Your comments about pelvic tilting (sitting up straight) is right on the money. Sitting on our low benches, though, makes it pretty difficult for most people. It's almost as if the paddler has to constantly switch back and forth from anterior tilts to posterior tilts with each stroke. That requires a lot of strength and mobility in the entire pelvic region. Sometimes I have my paddlers sit a little more forward on the bench so they are sitting on their sitting bones rather than the meat of the glutes.

      Right! I get it. However, it could be a coach just reminding the boat to rotate. But video doesn’t lie. Get someone to video while you paddle. Then you can see which part of the body needs to be activated; legs, glutes, etc.

  • @Branjiebelle
    @Branjiebelle Рік тому

    Do you think using a seat pad creates a drag that stops you from rotating properly?

    • @dragonboatcoach
      @dragonboatcoach Рік тому

      Hi @Branjibelle! I have never used a seat pad that restricted my rotation. However, I have only ever used the approved neoprene dragon saddles so Im not familiar with other brands. If you get a lot of blisters I would say your seat pad is too restrictive., in my opinion.

    • @dragonboatcoach

      Hi Cole! I like gunwhal leg forward and inside foot flat in the boat below the knee for stability in the stroke I coach. Bottom line; being able to land the body on the blade and pull yourself up with leg connection is what matters!

      Training in an OC for dragon boat instantly reveals your weaknesses in any aspect of your stroke. Your bad technique can "hide" in a drain boat, but not in an OC.

    • @dragonboatcoach
      @dragonboatcoach 2 роки тому

      Hi Penelopa! I think Lehmann answered the purpose of OC1 training for dragon boaters perfectly. I created these videos for those of us who train solo on our OC and then paddle dragon boat.These are the exact same drills I coach on the dragon boat. The blade mechanics (what our paddle does in the water) are the same on all vessels. But you are correct that how we sit on each vessel varies. Thats when we change body mechanics to adjust.
