Confession: I completely forgot to mention that this chap was painted in one day. It was a long one (started at 8:30, finished at 10, but on and off painting all day), but I thought it was worth mentioning you can do pretty passable characters fairly quickly, so don't feel intimidated! Anyway, hope you enjoyed the 'old-school' inspired Eldar content. See you next time! 🥰 Patreon: www.patreon.co...

I'm giving the slap metal technique a go right now
You and marco sold me on using this over unvarnished Acryllic! Awesome! So much stuff out there says its impossible... sounds like they just didn't let it dry enough?
Absolutely friggin FIRE. Great work
Tried this. Total mess unfortunately. Im using black oil paint on a teal tank. The oil and white spirit mix goes into the grooves ok, but when i try to clean it up with a brush it comes out again. Its left smudgy stained grey black bits on my teal paint
I had the idea for a “Ravers of Slaanesh” Warhammer army with a psychedelic paint scheme. This was IMMEASURABLY helpful as a basis for the color scheme and overall aesthetic I want for the army as a whole. Thank you! Beautiful work! 🤩❤️👍
Love to hear it! Do tag me on socials if you post your chaps. Would love to see them! 😁
What paints did you use for the Gasmasks/Boot wrappings?
Best big knight model I've ever seen I think. What were the specific Scale75 metallics you drybrushed?
Thanks so much. It's Black Metal, and then you can work your way up to Thrash metal and even higher depending on how bright you want it :)
@@GRGMiniatures Thanks! I've only painted one Poxwalker, still very noob. So I'm not really sure what I want yet. Just browsing guides for things that look good. Hopefully I can combine all the different elements from people who inspire me into something coherent. The only Scale75 in stock in my country is like £19 per bottle for some reason. Any idea what else could give a similar effect? Edit: Ordered from another country.
Yes, start talking about that. Been trying to wrap my head around why Purple and Yellow aren't complementary.
This would be great for Battletech Alpha Strike
Very cool
I'm currently building this finicky little team and will definitely be trying out this style. Really lovely work. Hope to see your take on more blood bowl teams. Thank you for taking the time to post.
Man! This is a great education in painting and color theory. Thank you for this. I'd like to ask, which Liquitex Acrylic Gouache colors would you use for your cyan, magenta and yellows if you were trying to recommend a core set of colors for someone to start using?
Love these so much! I don't play 40K, but your painting videos are really run to watch.
Thank you so much! :)
What's your experience been with priming using the molotow paints via airbrush? I tried them once after hearing good things, but didn't have great results, and they seemed to not stay on the mini too well. Probably user error, as it was my first time with an airbrush and it was just an airbrush that came free with the compressor, but yeah, curious to hear the thoughts of someone with a bit more experience!
I've always had really great experience with them. The only time I've found they didn't stick was if there was dirt or grease on the model. Normally just wiping with some kitchen paper sorts that, or in extreme cases a bit of isopropyl alcohol (another great product to have on hand, by the way) Another common issue with airbrush priming from beginners is being too far from the model when you spray. Of course you don't want to be flooding the mini with too much paint, but you do want to be close enough that the paint it going on wet. If you're too far away the tiny particles can partially dry in the air before they hit the mini, which obviously inhibits adhesion! Let me know how it goes! :)
Thanks so much for the advice! I tend to be pretty cautious, so high probability I was spraying too little from too far away!
Great introduction. I hope you made all the next parts.
Not yet! But soon(ish)...!
Nice video with great narration!
Thank you!
What grit sanding stick do you use?
Sorry for the slow response! I think everything from 400 to 2000 depending on what I'm doing and how important that smooth finish is. The packs of modellers sanding sticks you can get always have everything you need in them!
Great video ! Can’t wait for the rest of the series.
Thanks, Keith!
Molotov refills for the win. Too bad they are bad with the brush, at least some of them. Molotov black goes smoothly with brush.
That is SO MUCH WORK and it looks dull as fuck. That gold is just weark and has no reflection whatsoever.
I d love a video on how to prep 3d printed figurines. I hate this step of the hobby and often realise there are marcs on minis after i m done with the paint job 😢
Great list, very comprehensive. I know it would likely get covered when you get around to a paintbrush dive deeper video, but I struggled to get hold of a WNs7 size 0,1 or 2 for quite a while a few years back. While WN are very nice brushes, I would advocate the Rosemary & Co s33. Half the price of WN and in my opinion just as good. They also do sable/synthetic blends which so far have been great workhorse brushes for me.
Thanks so much! Yes, I hear lots of good things about R & co! Artist Opus too! In the end, it's just a good high quality sable brush we're after! :)
Really solid list. You could go on forever adding items to it, like a water pot and cloth for cleaning brushes between paints, an empty jar for all your sprue offcuts (to save for making goo!) a mask when priming, etc etc but for just getting a new painter off to a good start this nails it all.
*looks around room* Yup, you can definitely go on forever when buying hobby stuff...... 😂
Have to say a Roseamary of Co brush ain't that Moreton cheap acrylicsand oh what a difference definitely bang for buck.
Plastic putty is way easier to use and more effective than Milliput
i used to play Malifaux during 2nd edition. When Wyrd had their working of 3rd edition leaked it kinda died out where I'm at. Haven't seen things for it since I tried preodering my factions cards. Good to see a Malifaux model again.
It is IRRESPONSIBLE to practically demand your viewers get a wet palette! In extremely humid environments, they actually are WORSE for painting with. When extremely humid, the paint will rapidly wash out, and two brush fulls five minutes apart will be VERY different in opacity and behaviour. In very humid environments, a cold porcelain tile is absolutely better than a wet palette.
Relax, holy shit, it's not irresponsible of him. How is he supposed to know that? Literally every minipainter on UA-cam recommends a wet pallette, not a whole lot of them live in tropical regions / super humid ones
If I were you, I'd stop using your wet palette in your bathroom immediately after having a hot shower.
Great video and great opinions. I don't share your point about GW paints. There are more expansive then others, true. But the whole Pot-Gate-Nonsense is overblown from my point of view. It isn't that hard to simply keep your Lid clean. The range in general is super consistent for me and had a superb choice of colors. Vallejo, AK or (the new) Army Painters are perfect choice as well. The old Game Color Starter Set was the perfect mix of colors I think. The only thing this set was missing was a nice magenta and a Black and Brown wash. This set could carry you very very far.
Yeah, I don't want to come down too harshly on the GW paints, but my point is simply that other paints are at least as good, without either of the drawbacks at all, so it's not a 'these are terrible don't buy them', more of a 'what's the point of buying them, if other options are available?'. At any rate, if that's what someone has, or that's all they can get, they're perfectly fine, of course!
Some additions/thoughts: * A sharps container for spent blades-I'm using an old pill bottle. * Super glue debonder if getting super glue-stuck fingers are no fun ever. Debonder is more important than activator imo. * Band aids, because even the most cautious (definitely, definitely me) of us slip-and *on top of the hobby desk*, not buried in the bathroom or the kitchen junk drawer or the back of the hobby desk where you need to go rummaging while trying not to bleed everywhere. * I would say getting *nice* nippers specifically is so much better than getting bad/cheap ones that feel like they crush more than they cut that it's best to just buy a good one at the start. I'm not sure how expensive the one you mentioned is but Tamiya wasn't *too* painful. I almost regret buying the cheap ones I got at the hardware store, except that I can still use them to do things roughly, like cutting wire or chopping up sprue, which has saved them from getting tossed. * I'm gonna make everyone mad and say you don't need to clean mold lines when starting.
Blade disposal is definitely something I'll touch on in the next video! It's a toughie though -- it's different everywhere you go! Even within the same city (looking at you, Tokyo). We can have a fight about mould lines elsewhere :P
Medium to dilute the paint. Buy less paint if necessary.
Great video! Can't think of anything you've missed
Thanks so much!
I’ve spent way too much on stuff I don’t use that seemed like a great idea at the time.
Amen, my friend, aaaaamen... 😂
This was an excellent video. Especially the part about the history. Would you then say that picking R, G, B + C, Y, M + Black and White as the 8 basis to mix colors a solid way? I'm picking rgb+cym, because I watched a video that stated that some colors could end up dull when mixed just with 3 colors. Especially green is a color that the eye perceives better than the other colors, it shouldn't be mixed. I'm just surprised why paint companies don't release a color wheel with ratios for their colors (or maybe it's a financial thing). Your video makes me think about getting some really high pigmented brand and mixing the color 8 colors in between and see where I land on the color wheel. Maybe by putting strokes on a piece of paper and scanning it back to see where they land on the wheel.
Thank you! You should always ask yourself what you're trying to achieve. Being able to freely mix colours and get the results you expect is skill every painter should try and develop, and using any kind of limited palette will grow your skill. CMY (plus RGB) should give you the biggest gamut to work with, and pure pigment paints will get you the most consistent results. That said, ultimately the goal is a well painted mini, and for that, often just using the premixed colour of your choice (at least for the base layers) is efficient and consistent! At any rate, good, single pigment paints of (roughly) cyan, magenta, yellow, red, green, and blue are an excellent thing to have in your collection, and really fun to play with while exploring colour theory and mixing!
You can also use the same color as the base if you don't have any clear.
Absolutely! But if you've worked on shading etc already, the clear is super handy :)
Good stuff!
Thanks!
What about molotow white signal as white primer. Anyone already tried and have some clue ? I wonder if any contrast style paint would reactivate the white 🤔
Absolutely gorgeous model. Wonderful and engaging teaching! Liked, subscribed, and excited to check out your channel. About to sit down and paint most of the savage keyword and this video helped immensely.
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed!
This series pushed me to buy an airbrush! Wish me luck.
Love to hear it! It takes a while to get the knack for most people, so don't let the initial hurdles get you down! Keep persevering and it'll become one of your fav tools :)
Been going through and watching a bunch of your videos, and I gotta say. It is fucking criminal that you have such few subs and views. Your underpainting vids and color theory work are amazing
Thank you! I'm sure there's more I could do to pull views, but at the end of the day I'm happy with slow sustainable views :) There'll be plenty more colour theory stuff down the line as well :))
ohh hoho yes please! Been hoping for something like this ever since I saw this glorious creation on reddit. Amazing work and thanks for the inspiration!
Thanks so much! Really means a lot when people take the time to leave a nice comment :)
No part 3? A shame. I know that colour theory and all its various applications arent algorithm friendly or great value for most youtube audiences looking for their 200th slapchop video. But thought id put a comment of appreciation towards you for the effort just to put this out there.
Thank you! I'm not so much of an algorithm chaser. It's nice when vids do well, but not the end of the world if they don't, so long as I like them :) There will be more colour theory in the future!
a colour mix video coming? :)
Definitely!! Can't make promises on timing, but we will certainly be returning to theory! :)
What kind of oil paint did you use?😊
Any kind of artist's oil paint will do! If you want to try but don't want to spend too much, I recommend the Windsor & Newton Winton series, but the Artist Oil range is higher quality if you want the good stuff. But as I say, just go to your nearest art shop and pick up some mid range oils to get started :)
@@GRGMiniatures Cheers!
That looks so awesome!!! I love the cultists, and especially the banners! And I always love seeing Family create together, that’s the best!!!
Thank you so much! :))
That Molotow Petrol is gorgeous. It would have been a shame to cover it up, if the end results weren't so good!
It's still there, lurking in the shadows ;) :P
