Period Wars: Interview with Heather Hendrie and Angelina Jimenez
Join us for a candid conversation about periods, PMDD, and piecing it all together with Heather Hendrie & Angelina Jimenez:
Half of our world’s population will have a period (or 450!) in their lifetimes, and yet the conversation about periods is still pretty quiet.
Heather Hendrie endeavors to change this in her new anthology Awfully Hilarious: Period Pieces. Period Pieces weaves together 26 powerful personal narratives about periods, cycles, puberty, menopause, and yes, PMDD! Heather and her fellow writers bust through taboo, secrecy, and shame to spark a conversation about menstruation that our world needs to have.
Join IAPMD’s Brett Buchert for an illuminating conversation with Heather Hendrie and Angelina Jimenez, another writer from Period Pieces as they share their stories about periods and PMDD. We’ll dig into topics around fault, blame, and control, the notion of a ‘normal’ period, the role of trauma and its relationship to PMDD, with a sprinkle of embracing femininity and unraveling the grip of patriarchy.

Research Explained: Is there more than one type of PMDD?

I feel very sad when no one understands my problems. I want to express how I feel, but no one seems to understand. Everyone just normalizes my problems, saying that it’s normal and that all girls go through it. I can't make them understand exactly what I’m struggling with. The most heartbreaking part is that even gynaecologists don’t understand.

I have adhd and aspergers which I’ve had since childhood, now in my 30s, both these diagnosis of me, and who I am, brings my anxiety and all other symptoms into “crazy”! No longer “amazing”. I feel so overwhelmed and alone with it, with anxiety I even get phobia of sleep. Worse than childhood, just not wanting to go to sleep back then. I occasionally do feel suicidal but don’t ever act on it, yet I fear that one week and a half up coming up to my period is so increasingly scary for me, it can be any day when worse, after my (I forgot the word!) when in the middle of cycle egg thing, just after. Then it can be again for a day. But the days before my period are the worst. I get so scared, I am so okay before, I am a gym goer, I am succeeding. Then, as the time dooms closer in the last few days pre beleding (a whole week) I drink more, I eat more, the next day is even too scary. I really hope there will be groups to help talk about this one day with others that are like me.

I am struggling with this conditions for years now and it's impossible for me to find doctors, therapists or psychiatrists who believe me. I really needed this. My period came on this morning and I was already becoming so anxious and anticipating being rude to the kiddos I work with, but taking this moment to breathe and give myself some grace and compassion for the day I have head and also knowing that I can always apologize and taking a moment to breathe before reacting or responding. Thank you 🙏🏾

My wife has PMDD. She self diagnosed realising it was cyclical, discovered that other women suffer with it, and takes Quetiapine on the really bad days. Day 10 before her period is when it kicks in and in the 2 to 3 days leading up to her period it can get extreme - hallucinations, psychosis, suicidal ideation, extreme paranoid and suspicion. When she's in the down phase she exercises far too much, won't eat, loes weight, becomes very masculine, dominant. For years i thought she had Borderline personality disorder - but it cycled and didn't fit. She was diagnosed bipolar but again it's cyclical. Antidepressants are horrible for her - they put her in an emotional straightjacket. I listened to a podcast by Andrew Huberman and decided to try her on Magnesium Threonate, L-Theanine, Apigenin. This has had a MASSIVE effect. It's not perfect, it really has a lot to do with how much isn't dealt with in her life in the pre ovulation period of her cycle. But the supplements have severely lessened her symptoms, and made it much easier for her to not listen to the negative thoughts. I'm a member of a 12 step fellowship - I'm no Saint and put her through a lot of hell. She's working the Steps now with a sponsor and this is dealing with the comorbid aspects. I'm going to try 5-HTP with her and see if this could be another adjunct to her treatment. I thank the Universe that PMDD is again being recognised after being driven out of western medicine for 100 years, and that we have brave people standing up against stigma and bullying, willing to admit that PMDD is REAL and debilitating to those women who suffer as my wife has. I'm so thankful that I have been shown ways to help her. I have the woman i love with all my heart back. Yes it's hard. But i know what's going on now, i know it's not my fault, i know how it works in her, and I've fallen more in love with her because of it. Thank you for this video - i got a lot of good information from it. Please don't stop what you are doing.

I don't know if there are studies to support this, but my personal anecdote: I have found that taking calcium, magnesium, and the b vitamins help immensely with the irritability, rage, sensitivity, and panic/anxiety. I didn't notice a change with the calcium/magnesium until I had taken it consistently for a month, but the b vitamins work within 24 hours of taking them. This, again, is just my personal experience after my physician recommended taking Optivite PMT. I am careful not to take over the recommended amounts, but I have found it cheaper to buy just those vitamins than the Optivite PMT, plus the Optivite PMT seemed to make me too keyed up.

What a difficult but important speech! Thank you! I'm so sorry you've been through it. It's such a relief to know it isn't me. I've been trying to take control of it, my therapy sessions help all the days except those 4-6 prementrual days. On those days it's like it isn't me, I am extremely fatigued, hypersensitive, depressed, I can't speak. I understand tomorrow is the next day, it always passes, but sometimes it's really unbearable, it's a torture. When I try to explain how I feel, I don't know how to do it, because ithose symptoms don't sound serious or as torturing as they feel. Yet there is hope.
