    Almost identical to twenty five years ago when a Sainsburys lorry veered off the A1 near Dishforth and killed six people, including a man and wife who had stopped as good samaritans to help out. Sadly a lot of people can't even pass a parked car nowadays without clouting it, let alone a crash scene. Sparing thoughts for the emergency services and the bereaved families. It must have been a very traumatic incident to deal with.

    Very sad news indeed Dave. Rest in peace P.C. Rosie Prior - you served with honour. The various state and territory police services in Australia all have a common ode, which is recited at police funerals and during National Police Remembrance Day ceremonies across the country each year. It was written in 1995 by Western Australia Police Chaplain Barry May. I'd like to include it hereon, I hope that's okay: "Police Ode" As the sun surely sets: dawn will see it arise, for service, above self, demands it's own prize. You have fought the good fight: life's race has been run, and peace, your reward, for eternity begun. And we that are left, shall never forget, rest in peace friend and colleague, for the sun has now set. We will remember. We will remember. Hasten the dawn. 🥀

    A history of Norton that jumps straight from OHC racing singles to - Commandos??? Have you never heard of the Model 7, 88, 88ss, 99, 99ss, Manxman, 650ss, Atlas 750…. All ignored. Tut tut, Sir. Try looking up “Norton Dominator”. You’ll find rather a lot about them, without Dommies there’d be NO Commandos!😊

    Royal Enfield just trademarked the name Bullet 650 Twin in the US. So a new Bullet 650 based on the 650 twin engine should be close to production. If this follows earlier name trademarks by the company, the bike itself should follow within a few months of the tradename application. At least according to Cycle World.

    My first BSA was a 1967 BSA 441 Victor which I used extensively on the forest trails of northeastern Minnesota in north central USA. It was the third motorcycle I had owned and the second of a "scrambler" variety but, unfortunately, it had followed a Honda 250 Scrambler CL72 which was vastly more durable and dependable yet I continued with two more BSAs including a 1968 BSA 441 Shooting Star and a 1969 BSA Rocket 3 which was NOT slower than a Honda CB750 and in fact had gobs more personality but did drip more oil😎British motorcycles have always been my idea of what a motorcycle should look like.

  • @worldofameiso5491

    Decline in our domestically manufactured Motorcycle industry, if not inevitable, was probably predestined because of a number of factors, mainly: lack of investment (both from the companies' owners and governments) a mentality within the companies which suggested that they had a 'right' to dominate the domestic market, lack of innovation and over-reliance on old technology which they were loath to update or replace. These characteristics are sadly a huge issue in the UK, where we continue to place too much faith in our once dominant position in the world of engineering. Lack of innovation and investment will always catch-up with a company - I think the Japanese big four are potentially entering that situation in respect of emerging Chinese and Indian dominance in the market with good quality, cheaper exports. Apart from Triumph, which thanks to its billionaire owner who is willing to invest heavily, has bucked the trend, the UK M/C manufacturing sector is now made up of very niche brands with very small numbers made. Royal Enfield has shown us how it can be done, produce good quality, well-priced bikes that cater for their target market and what do you know? They are successful.

    An interesting history lesson! You did omit a short period in the life of BSA, though. One of the owners prior to Mahindra was BSA Regal based in Southampton, who acquired the brand in around 1994. (I remember passing their offices in West Quay on my way to the Honda dealer, Rye's.) Between 1997 and 2000 they did a limited run of their version of the Gold Star, which used a Yamaha SR500 engine. Quite a handsome machine - do a Google search and check it out. BSA Regal is still in Southampton today, although it is now solely an engineering company and not involved in bike production.

    The BSA bantam was a German design that was acquired by BSA as war reparations following WW2 and quite a good bike for its time. The Norton Commando was not a good bike, an engineering by the name of Doug Hele ( spelling ? ) arrived at Norton to be asked to bump the 500cc Dominator twin to 650cc . Having looked at the idea he refused on grounds of reliability and vibration so quit Norton and got a job with Triumph and was part of the team that developed the Trident / rocket three triple cylinder bikes. When Norton & Triumph merged he was asked to take the 750 commando up to 850, this engine had its origins in the 500 dominator ! Eventually it got as far as 830cc but the crankshaft whipped about so much that barrel shaped main bearings has to be used to stop the whip breaking crankshafts. The vibration was so bad that the engine was mounted in a very clever isolastic rubber mount isolating the rider from vibration but working around the fact that the engine was doing its best to tear its self apart. Back in the day I owned a commando very briefly and considered the engine akin to a hand grenade with a chocolate pin. The Triumph Trident / BSA rocket three was years ahead in technology but suffered from lack of investment in the machine tools to simplify the design with a horizontal split crankcase. I think the lesson is just because something is a classic it does not follow it was very good even for its time.

    • @SteveInskip
      @SteveInskip 22 години тому

      You sort of nailed that. I once saw a Commando vibrate from one side of the road to the other on the centre stand. Norton even admitted that they made more money on spares than on the original bike. Always lusted for a Norton but opted for a Z1R instead. Never regretted that. Smooth, fast, oil tight, didn’t need the tappets checking every month, started on the button etc, etc.

    Wonder why it is that Royal Enfield under Indian ownership seem to do everything right and BSA under Indian ownership seem to not be able to match this performance. The GoldStar launch seemed to go from one problem to another and now the launch of their scrambler seems to be following that trend. Enfield have successfully launched their scrambler and will be in showrooms shortly whereas BSA seem to be all over the place with theirs, now quoting June, possibly. Their pricing was all wrong with the GoldStar I'm betting the scrambler will be the same.

      @ianhalliwell8604 still grinding that axe are we? You chose to dump an apparently excellent bike due to your perceived issue with, an admittedly, drastic price reduction by BSA. Long term ownership of motorcycles is acknowledged as the best way to minimise the cost of the initial investment. Further to that, doing as much maintenance oneself as possible also recovers more of the investment. I politely suggest you take responsibility for your choices and stop blaming BSA with your frequent axe grinding.

    A friend of mine had three BSA Bikes in his stable. an M20 ex military dispatch riders bike, a RGS and and a road Rocket. l never got to ride the M20 but the Road Rocket was a lovely Motorcycle ....to look at as well as ride. The RGS has the kudos of what it was/is, it wasn't very 'comfy', built as it was in full 60s Cafe Racer mode.... had l been in my late teens, with a more supple body perhaps l could have ignored that fact...However, once kicked into life, like all Beezer big twins they sounded wonderful...The Norton, the famed featherbed...stuff of legend....if any one piece of design transformed a motorcycle it was the Featherbed chassis..
