Decided to use up the V730s, the rear left was chunking and this seemed to be the last session for the set before the grip levels plummeted. Corded the tires this weekend, so got full utilization of 13 track days. RE71RS is next for this set of wheels.
Damping was modified to induce some quicker response on corner entry and to allow the car to point quickly for corner exit. Seems like the gamble to make the car very oversteer-biased paid off for this session. Drift sessions later in the day turned this car into a drift car. Hope to be able to do 1:25s and dip into 1:24 optimal times soon.
Lap Analysis:
- T1: Same excuse as always for braking into T1, fighting with ABS while threshold braking is pretty distracting. Sometimes I think I'd be faster without ABS, as my tires are still locking even with ABS.
- T7: Quite timid on the entry, had a massive slide on exit in the prior lap.
Ambient: ~60F, cloudy and recent rain/drizzle
Mods (Speedsf Challenge S5 Build):
- 5-speed stock power (besides Roadstersport Race Muffler)
- Shaftworks Bilanx on 650 [lb/in] front and 450 [lb/in] rear
- 13 clicks from full soft in the front
- 10 clicks from full soft in the rear
- 27 psi front hot
- 27 psi rear hot
- Progress front and rear ARB
- PFC 11 front and rear pads
- AWR Brake ducts
- Kumho V730 225R17-45 on 17x8
- 12th track day
- OS Giken LSD
Alignment:
Front
- -3.5 deg camber
- 6 deg caster
- 0 deg toe
Rear
- -3.0 deg camber
- 0.15 deg toe in each side

Not a PB, messed up pretty badly by playing around in traffic as this was the only non-scorching hot session today. Also need to not be lazy and actually tape down the microphone. Seems like the PFC11 front and rear do not bite as hard as the GLOC R12 front R10 rear combo so the heel-toe downshift from 4 to 3 was very manageable. Also experimented with staying in fourth but being able to do the...

Not sure why I keep PBing here in blazing hot temps. Probably a high 1:54 with this setup in the Fall. Overall, need some tuning of steady-state behavior with ARBs. Sonoma doesn't have any crests such as Buttonwillow's Phil Hill or Thunderhill East's Cyclone so perhaps the Progress rear ARB can go on and won't cause the inside wheel to lift. - T2 is lacking some finesse, not holding wide enough...

Brought the Nankang CRS out to West and they were pretty good. So good that I was getting brake fade due to pushing the car too hard. Lap Analysis: - T1 still going in too tight on the first apex, causing the car to be pinched and requiring excessive steering angle to complete the turn. Scrubs off too much speed. - T3 can probably try no brakes, just a lift - T4 overslowed, should be able to hi...

Today was pretty hot, didn't get any quick laps in during the first two sessions because I was getting accustomed to the track due to reasons. Sonoma is moving up in my list of favorite tracks. 62.087. More messy driving and forgot to start the Gopro until I already started driving. The CRS is quite unique in that it has a large slip angle operating range. 55.553 Not my best driving but here's a bunch of excuses. The Nankang CRS ran a bit wider than anticipated which caused rubbing. Rear ride height was increased by an inch from the ground to the pinch weld (motion ratio is ~1 in the rear). The Catalyst didn't record my camera footage. T2 definitely needs some more finesse, I think I need to downshift to second while trail braking. Accelerating out of the turn at 3500 RPM is awful. Amazing driving! How are you reaching 90mph on 3rd? Did you change diff gears ratios? On my NC3 I can only get till around 70ish mph on third before I have to hit 4th gear. My buddy has an NC1 it’s about same for him; up to 70ish on 3rd gear.

    • @joeyzhu7139
      @joeyzhu7139 День тому

      The car has a five speed, so the ratios are super long compared to the six speed. It makes things simple but the car falls way out of power band in the low speed corners.

    Feels like you held back through t4. And how necessary is that downshift through t6

    • @joeyzhu7139
      @joeyzhu7139 2 дні тому

      Probably got like 1-2 more mph through T4 on the V730s based on previous laps. I think the downshift is necessary in T6 because I experimented with staying in fourth and it loses like a quarter second in the corner exit. This engine seems to love high revs and the five speed ratios are pretty far apart with third as 1.0 and fourth as 1.33. I'd dip to ~4300 RPM in fourth for min speed on V730s and the car just feels gutless at that rpm. I think the tradeoff gets more interesting though with CRS as there's a hypothetical 81+ mph vmin in good conditions where staying in fourth would be a bit higher in the rev range.

      @@joeyzhu7139 yeah I just realized you're able to floor it for quite a while in 3rd. That downshift is absolutely not worth it in my car, but I have way more torque and less grip. You should experiment with basically burning the clutch to slowdown instead of braking, shifting, then getting back on the gas

    wow, that is pretty soft on the suspension set up, but I dont see much obvious bodyroll. I have the xida with 11k front and 7k rear. • @joeyzhu7139
      @joeyzhu7139 3 місяці тому

      Setup and spring rates are in the description. I am on the softer end of the adjustment range because there's 27 clicks of rebound adjustment on the dampers. The car is intentionally set up to understeer steady state and has very quick rotation while trail braking. My philosophy for tuning has been to first figure out whether it was my inputs causing understeer or oversteer by reviewing data and then making changes based on whether there was something I didn't like on corner entry, steady state cornering, or corner exit. For me, my understeer biased setup works pretty well if I can manage my inputs well.

    looks like you are also rev matching early from 3rd to 2nd to prevent grinding? is this a common issue on the 5 speed? cuz I have the same issue, too.

    • @joeyzhu7139
      @joeyzhu7139 5 місяців тому

      I've been trying to do the 3->2 shift as late as possible recently but before I start turning in and the grinding seems to happen less frequently (I suspect due to lower RPMs). I also changed out my rear differential bushings for poly bushings from Mazda Motorsports (it's just the Whiteline bushings) and that helped quite a bit. I think it's common between the 5 and 6 speeds when quickly shifting as a few of my buddies have this happen as well. I also noticed that slowing down my shifts helped mitigate a lot of the grinding. This day I was using some redline fluid over the ford motorcraft and seemed to have less grinding but the shifts are much notchier with the redline fluid.

    • @joeyzhu7139
      @joeyzhu7139 6 місяців тому

      I'll work on letting the revs get lower before blipping. Any ideas on what to do for the straight to T6 after the esses? Slamming into the rev limiter for several seconds is probably not optimal for engine health. I'm wondering whether I would lose a lot of time by just upshifting into fourth and staying there for T6, then doing 4-3-2 at T7. Makes things a bit busy though. I'm also thinking that I am overslowing for T4 and fixing that would make my speeds a bit higher resulting in the need to upshift to 4th on the straight to T6.

    • @IanKorf
      @IanKorf 6 місяців тому

      @@joeyzhu7139 It's not about letting the revs drop. If you clutch in too early, you end up waiting a long time before shifting. If the revs drop and you feed the clutch, you didn't match revs. Keeping in gear longer before using the clutch keeps the revs in the transmission longer so that when you blip shift you don't have to feed the clutch. But you can't do this early in the brake zone or you will wreck the engine. Just brake a second longer before blipping and shifting. Riding the rev limiter isn't going to damage your engine. Driving a higher gear is sometimes faster and often instructive. Similarly, shifting 4-3-2 in T7 and T4 is also instructive. Do some sessions where you're just "practicing" and not as focused on lap time. Practice one time with higher gears everywhere. Practice another time with lots of shifting. Then overlay the data traces when you get home. BTW, I also have an MX5 (PRHT and auto), but I haven't even taken it to the track. I've sort of retired from real racing. I like watching you enjoy your MX-5 while you get faster. You're doing great.
