    The Millie you have is maybe an ex British Army hybrid, the cab, headlamps above the bumper are civilian and non standard as is the wheels and tyres. I think your Millie is a one off hybrid built by AEC Southall to special order for a customer in Australia, hence the civilian cab with sun visor and lack of slinging flanges on the rear bogie hubs. Prior to the 1970,s very few Millie Mk 1,s found their way to civilian applications, but AEC offered the Millie as a 6x6 off road quarry dumper, . Crane maker Coles also used the Millie for their lorry mounted mobile crane . Douglas Engineering of Cheltenham UK built a limited number of 6x6 timber tractors based on Mk 1 Millie mechanicals, engine gearbox transfer box front axle and winch, only difference is Douglas bought in from John I Thornycroft of Basingstoke Hampshire the rear bogie from their 6x4 'Big Ben' Tractor.

Do you have any information regarding the Millie,s bodywork or what work she did on the project, a water, fuel tanker ,flatbed lorry?. Only the long wheelbase Troop Supply Transport Millies have the short cab, while the Gun Tractors have the larger cab for the gun crew plus driver.

      i think its a Ruston Hornsby 3VRH. it runs on 3 cylinders sometimes and one 1 other times. one cylinder is worn out. other issues are worn injecto pump and the gear drive to the pump is also worn out. it jump gears once before and stopped running and i think its done the same not long after that video i took. the Jaques 15J shovel to the left has a Lister of the same size in it and runs rather well.

    I picked up a Bucyrus 22-B a couple years ago. I truly thought I was going get it to scrap but I got there and bought a battery and figure let me see if the motor will turn. Mechanic said it hadn’t ran in 18 years. Was missing radiator. When I bumped starter I like to cut the one in half with me bc he was standing by the fan blade and that 1 bump cranked it. Never spun over once. I bumped starter and it cranked. I immediately killed it and drove back home and got a radiator off a broke 22-B and went back. Installed radiator, filled w/ antifreeze, greased for hours and sprayed a case of penetrating oil while working levers. It had oil & diesel. Tracked on Low Boy and took home. If could paste a photo here I would!

    What you have rescued and coaxed to smoky noisy life from the bone yard , is a a late Mark One AEC Militant, short wheelbase civilianised artillery tractor originally designed to tow the 5,5inch medium gun.. The rear bogie ,hubs wheels and tyres are non standard , commercial, lacking the sling flanges on each rear hub as specified by the British Army for quick loading unloading by ship mounted derricks. On another video detailing the chassis and axles, I noticed the wheels are not standard for this model, being plain off centre discs, the Millie would be shod on military pattern' split rims' , easily identifiable by a ring of small studs just inside the rim. This unique feature enabled REME mechanics to quickly change a tyre and tube with the wheel rim still on the hub, important on makeshift, repair and servicing depots close to the front line. Millies engine is AEC,s A220 ,a 150hp 11,3 litre direct injection diesel, based on the 9,6litre A204 of 1938 designed by John Rackham with technical help from Harry Ricardo. Chassis is pure Matador apart from the rear bogie and gearbox, five speed instead of four, a bit of a handful due to its odd driver unfriendly gear gate , reverse ,second ,and fourth gears on the top , first, third and fifth on the bottom. Rear bogie is adapted from the 6x4 Marshall Mammoth, using spiral bevel primary reduction gears , double helical 'herringbone' spur gear secondary reduction with built in differential . The axle casings are the same as a Civilian Mammoth that use a single reduction overhead worm differential designed by David Brown of Meltham Mills Huddersfield. Millies are popular in UK as Timber Tractors, ex army Millies converted for that role by Douglas Engineering of Cheltenham, and make very good breakdown recovery tractors, a number of bus operators including London Tr- ansport used them to tow, recover failed buses and coaches. An old Millie will out perform any modern 6x6 on the rough stuff, and loved by fairground owners for their on site mud plugging ability.

      @@user-sc8dh4vn4v Thanks ,AEC is my fav lorry maker, Dennis Brown a local timber haulier has restored a rare Douglas 6x6 Timber Tractor based on Millie mechanicals, rare in having a Thornycroft 'Big Ben' rear bogie regularly shown working with a steam driven mobile saw bench at my local steam rally. To start, drive, and do a bit of tree stump removal is testament to AEC,s seriously quality engineering. That same quality engineering saved Australia from being invaded by Japan in 1941-42, a single AEC 8x8 Colonial Tractor built in 1933 by AEC Hardy Motors kept Darwin in the fight supplying vital military material ,guns ammunition spare parts food ,and fuel. Its three Dyson trailers grossly overloaded and with basic maintenance , AEC,s Colonial Tractor clocked up hundreds of miles on terrain you have second thoughts driving a newish SUV, on 20 less of the Millie,s 150hp. Some trips the gallant AEC ColonialTractor hauled four trailers over axle breaking dirt tracks that would defeat a Toyota Hilux .

    It's an AEC Militant Mk1 6x6, hence the 0860 on the plate, the 6x4 were 0859. The SWB, like this one have 12ft 10 in wheelbase, and the LWB version are 16ft. The SWB version were used as gun tractors and tippers. The LWB were mostly cargo & tankers. The cab on this isn't an AEC one, lacks the side windows behind the doors. I believe that the handbrake is of the multi pull ratchet variety, which flies off once the lever is pulled and the trigger actuated. Some were later fitted with Atlas folding knuckle cranes. Power steering wasn't fitted, hence boot marks on the dash as drivers fought the tendency in low gear to go straight ahead. There was no inter axle diff on the rear bogie, so some preserved examples have the last prop shaft removed to stop wind up. Like the Matador, best described as 'go anywhere - eventually'.

    • @hurricanedaniel
      @hurricanedaniel 2 роки тому

      Thanks for the info Robert. Im not sure who made the cabin for it. Ive been told it was possibly import to Australia for the snowy mountain hydro project and used as a offroad water tanker. It has signs that some thing was running off the PTO shaft via chain drive. Its defantly not a fast truck thats for sure haha, but it looks cool.
