    You said “it’s not the normal word for bite”. I’m not sure what you mean, because נָשַׁךְ nâshak is the only word for "bite" in Biblical Hebrew. There is no other word that specifically means "bite" in the Hebrew Bible.

    • @hebrewbibleinsights
      @hebrewbibleinsights 7 днів тому

      Good correction! I should have said it is a word that is only used to describe snake bites except for this verse in Micah. The point being that the Micah verse elicits serpent imagery. It is still noteworthy that this verb is very rare, only appearing 11 times in the Hebrew Bible all describing or alluding to a specific context. It cold be argued that ancient Hebrew had another word or words to describe biting. This is unfortunately a dynamic that occurs with the limited corpus of ancient Hebrew available to us in the surviving texts. Biblical Hebrew does have other words related to eating or consuming types of actions, and those words are not used in this verse in Micah (even though a number of English translations give that sense by saying “when they have something to eat” or something similar). The Hebrew word usage seems intentional to me, and the serpent allusion is missed in English.

      Hagar is typically referred to as the servant or slave of Sara, but she was given to Abram (Abraham PBUH) as a wife (Gen 16:3), but still labeled as a servant and slave afterwards. Evidence: Gen 16:3 So after Abram had been living in Canaan ten years, Sarai his wife took her Egyptian slave Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife most will consider her to be of lesser status than Sara, but that doesn't affect the first born son Ishmael (PBUH) as it says in Duet 21:15-17 that the inheritance is still given to the first born son. From looking at the stories of Ishmael (PBUH) and Isaac (PBUH) its clear there is something fishy going on with the translation of the text. Alhamdulillah for Islam, the great nation promised to Ishmael (PBUH) and a fulfillment of Gods promise to Abram/Abraham (PBUH). I already know I'm gonna get haters and that's fine, your all free to believe what you want.

    This is such a lame video. It's the oldest literature on the Hebrew Bible, written in archaic Hebrew compared to the rest of judges and the entire pentateuch. It lists the tribes of Isreal but leaves out the Judah and Benjamin aka the kingdom of Judah. Chariots indicate the sea people's invasion that coincided with the late bronze age collapse. You didn't talk about any of this.

      Sounds like you are on an epic journey with the Biblical languages! We are glad to play a role in adding some inspiration. This is a tough question to answer. I think there are definitely pros and cons with the different books regarding learning Biblical Hebrew currently. At the moment, the one I would recommend the most is Learning Biblical Hebrew by Kutz and Josberger. There is a textbook and a workbook that are sold separately as well as an online website with additional resources. The textbook can be heavy with lengthy explanations, so don’t get too bogged down in the details if it gets overwhelming. The workbook is great with a reader for the Joseph story. I appreciate how early they get you reading Biblical text. The online resources will be helpful since you are studying on your own. Good luck on the journey! Feel free to reach out if you ever have any questions.

    Absurd. So it’s a “human” regardless of the fact the Word of God says it’s God/an Angel… So I guess Jacob and Hosea were both wrong 😂 No wonder David was not able to find anyone else making such a claim of it being a human opponent.

    Really amazing. Thank you for all the wisdom! Do you think that the lion in Samson’s story can also represent the sin nature? Sin is crouching at our door, hiding waiting to pounce on us. Samson (when the Spirit of the Lord was upon him) represents the man in the spirit. the flesh is at enmity against the flesh (Rom. 8). If the Spirit did not come upon Samson the lion would’ve torn him apart. But the Spirit gave him strength to easily overcome the lion aka the spirit gives us strength to overcome sin. However, in Samsons case, the Lion eventually ended up overcoming him.

The points you draw from it are right in line with the themes of Samson’s story as well. Sounds to me like you have the workings of a great sermon here!

    But when you're focuses on the message and you ignore the historical realities how can you have any validity in your claims. For instance if the flood happened in the world like 6000 years old how did we get Sargon the great and all the kingdoms around him and all the written records we have about the battles that he and other kingdoms at that time had we have cuniform tablets telling us of the battles What about the 6th dynasty of pharaoh in Egypt how did they exist if a flood happened.. what about the Harrapan civilization in the Pakistani region or the Caral culture in Peru (yes South America) these are just two of many cultures that we have evidence for that go from about 3000bc - 1800 bc So how could all of the entire world lived in that area and spoke one language around the tower of Babel incident when we know for absolute fact people spoke other languages long before that live in far away lands Not to mention the tower they believe was the zigrurat in Babylon and it was commissioned and created by the Babylonians for their God Marduk not Yahweh That's just a couple of 100 things that could be listed or history proves the flood didn't happen there's no break in the archaeological record in the civilizations So it dumbfound me how Educated people can still believe it

    Nice video! @ 43 minutes i think it is nice that Nathan brings up the good and evil search. That is exactly what i research in the bible, the source of knowledge of good and evil... The old narratives all set up a moral inside the readers and i personally compare it to my own source of good and evil and notice that it often is not the same. I personally cannot take the flood story literally from the simple fact that i cannot see a snail move from the point of the ark landing getting to the south tip in South America in time and survive in a natural way. But is see that the story sets a moral that if you think you are a good person according to your understanding to God, it is perfectly fine to kill anything else because it is all evil... Same problem i have with the story of Job, it is perfectly fine to kill women and children but not the one that is serving God perfectly... I think that these stories create a weird understanding of good and evil.

A great test would be to see if there is a difference between 1 egged twins and 2 egged twins in communication, do 1 egged twins at any time have to explain their words to the other twin or not? If not, then it will be proof of the existence of a non-material storage of memory based on DNA. AKA.. god. Another way to prove GOD is the knowledge of the future, a pure material world will never be able to produce knowledge of the future. Bit off topic, but maybe someone needs to read it ^^

    This story was just one symptom of those times. What was Israel supposed to be? A country ruled by God through the priest and prophets. However a couple of problems. There was no government so it was total anarchy. We know this from the phrase "Everyone did what was right in their own eyes" With no government there was no one to enforce the laws. What was supposed to happen when someone broke a law they were to take the lawbreaker to the priests who would hold a trial and maybe there was a prophet to consult the LORD about the situation then a verdict would be handed down. But how many ordinary people are going to arrest the law breakers especially if it was a mob and chances are they will kill you? So no trained police force or soldiers to deal with this. Now this story involves someone , a Levite, who has some influence and is probably has charisma. So HE broke the law to get vengeance and sacrificed his wife. The 12 tribes he sent the pieces to showed how dumb they were to listen to this guy. Again this is just one story but imagine that this type of thing was happening daily but in this case a war broke out.

    Enjoyable exchange on the Book of Tobit! Please consider inviting your guests that have addressed or made passing remarks about the Apocrypha on for an installment dedicated to these Deuterocanonical Books of the Holy Bible (which are certainly not canonical nor inspired and, hence, not integral to the canon of the Holy Scriptures-I subscribe to a classical, Reformed, and confessional Anglican and Lutheran position on the Apocrypha) and what possible insights this edifying literature offers and bears vis-à-via your excellent program’s foci and points of interest.

      This is a great suggestion! These books are at the very least immensely valuable for understanding the Second Temple period which is when some of the Hebrew Bible was still being written and/or edited. This is also the time period of the New Testament. These books are controversial for some today. I would hope that people would at least see the historical context value for the rest of Scripture. We have had a variety of Christian and Jewish scholars on the podcast and have a diverse audience who don’t land on the exact same spot on this issue. For what it’s worth, I (Matthew) am a confessional Anglican, so I also have personal interest in these books since they play a role in the daily office lectionary and the church calendar. Our view as stated in the Book of Common Prayer is that the church reads them for example of life and instruction of manners but does not apply them to establish doctrine. So there is a nuanced approach to applying these books. As I stated earlier, we have a diverse audience, and our modus operandi is to first focus on understanding these books in their original ancient near eastern context and then discussing how they work through the New Testament, the history of the Church, and Christians today. That context becomes more complicated with the influence of Greek and Roman culture for the Apocrypha. Be on the lookout for an upcoming interview with a premier Ben Sira scholar named Panc Beentjes! We already recorded it so it should post in the near future. You might also enjoy a past episode we did with a scholar who did his dissertation on Ben Sira. Thanks again for the thoughtful suggestion!

      You’re welcome, and I’m delighted to learn that Pancratius Beentjes will be on! Blessed be the LORD of Israel! The episode featuring Peter Beckman, by the way, was the first one I ever watched. Not only did I immensely relish it, I was edified and encouraged by Beckman’s work, engagement, and testimony. Plus, I was further galvanized in my studies of the Apocrypha and then-new-and-emerging ambition to advance an approach to studying and teaching these Deuterocanonical/Apocryphal books informed by the Reformation and early post-Reformation periods’ Christian Hebraism and the Jacobean Church of England’s rigorous engagement with the Holy Bible.

      (Ben Sira is my favorite Apocryphal book. Indeed, we certainly must adopt and apply a nuanced approach to the non-inspired Deuterocanon per our stance exhibited in the XXXIX Articles of the Church of England’s sound position on this matter consonant with the ancient Church’s catechetical use of them for edification and instruction in manners, acknowledging that they cannot be used to establish doctrine since they are not Holy Writ. (Thank you for keeping it confessionally Anglican by the LORD God of Israel’s grace.))

      Ben Sira is also my favorite book of the apocrypha! It happens to be one of our other primary sources of Hebrew that dates to the time before Jesus that is outside of the Hebrew Bible.

    Samaritans were heavily mixed and intergrated with other foreigners and their religious beliefs. This is one of the reasons why they were looked at as different. But they definitely were not a “Hub” for God. How could that be possible when they were worshipping other Gods to the point God scattered them. The parable of the two sisters highlights this fact.

    100% sure he’s concealing the fact that Samaria was worshipping the devils of the ancient canaanites such as Baal, they set up a graven image of a cow. Since the time of Jeroboam who intially set it up to intercept the worship of God preadventure the children fall back for the king of Judah while doing so. Why can’t the simple truth be told? Why all the obfuscation. Smh

  • @zackmano
    @zackmano 2 місяці тому

    Christians are so detached from Jewish history and traditions and understanding of historical realities of that time. How can you have a conversation about ancient Jews and Samaritans without discussing the כותיים/Kuthiim, Nebuchadnezzar's ethnic cleansing and displacement policies, and the interaction after the return of Jews under Ezra?? Really, it's like you guys have no concept of history or any events or ancient literature of this period... You're literally just inventing narratives to support your religious beliefs without any real historical basis. I respect your right to belief false things, but please stop teaching these things to the poor people who don't know any better.

    • @warmbeergamingdude

      THANK YOU! they obviously have some type of agenda and its not about getting to the truth. This guy said they were worshipping God in samaria and completely concealed the fact that they had been worshipping demons of the canaanites that jeroboam set up. Unbelievable.
