For ORCHESTRA: Haydn - String Quartet in F Minor, Op. 20,5 - Finale Fuga
For me the greatest Haydn string quartet Finale! I felt that this must be also be put into a symphonic garment. This movement is full of most wonderful counterpoint as elsewhere I know it only from the Finale of Mozart's quartet K 387 and Beethoven's op. 59,3 - movements which I also orchestrated (see my playlist). I hope you will enjoy that ...

8 Variations in a-minor for Piano on a melancholic Melody Sketch by Beethoven from 1820

Overture on the notes B-A-C-H - on sketches by L.v.Beethoven (1822-25)

In the years roughly around the composition of the 9th symphony Beethoven wrote several sketches on the notes B-A-C-H for an orchestral overture ("H" here the German letter for the note "B" ). On the request of Armando Orlandi from www.lvbeethoven.it I tried to develop these (together with own themes) with greatest pleasure and fascination to an overture (as I have done it with several other un...

Very impressive! The various shades of intensity of the light are constantly fluctuating, like a stream - there is a real sense of finale, and the theme sketched by Beethoven is used in an imaginative and consistent way. My sincerest congratulations on your great and remarkable work!

Very enjoyable; truthful to the musical idiom of Beethoven’s late period. The fragmented sequences create an uneasy atmosphere, a sense of inevitability. To this, the beautiful Trio brings a refreshing and much-needed contrast, like a memory of the carefree youth that is beyond reach. The fragility of earthly life and the peace of the hereafter are alternating - Arietta is like a heartfelt prayer. Masterful work!

What great work you did! I tried something similar with an unfinished sketch by Schumann back some years… I will side with what was already said, horns and trumpets are used slightly too chromatically for that period and the composer. If you want, you can use trombones for that purpose, since they were much higher in pitch than today and could easily take over what you sometimes gave the horns..

I'd just like to point out that trumpets couldn't play chromatically back then. They were restricted to the notes of the harmonic series. If you look at what Mendelssohn wrote, his writing is strictly limited to those notes. I don't think a completion that doesn't take this fact into account does justice to Mendelssohn.

@@gerdprengel7616I'd like to add onto that; horns were also limited to the harmonic series. I would write whatever key Mendelssohn originally set the brass to and have it only play notes from that. Also, transposing instruments don't switch very often within movements, so I would tacet clarinets, horns, and trumpets wherever the key isn't right for them. For example, I see there is a moment where the key goes from 0 sharps to 3 sharps. That would be a moment where the A clarinet could be used instead of the Bb.

I will say, with this and the 4th movement I noticed your F# timpano was an octave too low, as in the original symphony it's a high F# timpani. I know it sounds better lower to be honest, but I do feel like to fit in more it should probably be at that range.

Does not sound like Lou in most passages, sounds like some sketches possibly enhanced. Please do not take this the wrong way, but later in his days he was so good at a prescribed method. I would say this is not anything he would endorse. But however you can clearly see his orchestration values in the opening.

Beautiful work! It's a shame it isn't in the common repertoire of the major symphonies of the world. Unfortunately, they play only the same old, same old. Not that what they play is not worthy, but they leave unplayed such that ought be common names, but are totally obscured.
