A war of attrition. Back to how it should be. I'm very impressed.

This is brilliant fabrication with only partial original reference material to work from. The previous sheet aluminium, pop rivet, expanding foam and brazed, beaten steel all looked very home made. My impression is that these cars were very styling-led when the were produced. I'd be intrigued to know how production engineers translated the shapes they got from the stylists into sheet metal pressings that could be welded for mass production. I think we got a hint of what was involved in this video with the unpicking of the multiple pieces of the sill, inner wing, wheel tub, boot floor etc. It was a bit like archaeology and quite complex.

I like these restoration videos but I hate that crab background noice(music?) the action parts of the videos seem a little blurred.

Typical US repairs, never ever buy a car from the US, unless its dirt cheap, its guaranteed to be full of filler, foam and glass fibre, its not a bodge in their eyes, its how avlot of their body people do stuff. I have had a crashed car from the US, where they filled the wrinkles in the chassis, ffs.

It should be illegal to 'repair' like the ones you had to fix. I also would be sueing the person i bought it from.

Excellent metal working skills, especially in the face of the complex sectional construction. Along the edge of where your primer overlaps the paint, the body filler appears to be 5-10mm thick!

Reminds me of Harry’s Lancia, appalling repairs, rot galore, total mess. Proper repairs start here, a lot of work and cost, but how good would it feel to own a really well sorted 59.. Top quality video and detailed content👍👍

Looks good. While it was not designed for a 60 year life, all that double skinning and water traps was bound to get water from the window pans and boot interior. I often see cars advertised with 'just a couple of bubbles to attend to - quoted £200 from paint shop'. Yeah right.

Hillbillies/Rednecks love that expanding foam , seen it on nearly every american so called restored car video , the only upside is that it saved the car from the scrapheap in the US , can only admire your patience and craftsmanship sorting it all out .

Yes your comment on farms used for restoration programmes , they’re everywhere!! No planning, no buisness rates, waste and plastic materials burnt on site, poured down drains or just left there , no restrictions on hours of working due to noise. Must be very frustrating for you.

As someone in the motor trade I cannot hack these prices per hour . Price the job like they used to . 10 grand for paint crackers .

Tosh, most people don't want a concours finish and a nut and bolt rebuild, just a flop and they will do the haircut. Rubbing down a car body after taking the exterior trim off and masking the windows with welding wire is a days job plus another 2 days of painting and polishing. You want to be at the top of the restoration tree go ahead and fight for the very few customers with more money than you or I will ever have.

It's not easy to do this kind of repair without a jig, but it's doable for an experienced bodyman. The first jigs if I'm not mistaken appeared in1948 and they were very crude with sometimes just the front bolted on the left and right and the rear just sitting on glorified jack stands, and it was like this up to the 60's. When there's a type of car I do often for which no jigs exist I fabricate my jig, if it's a complete build/rebuild I prefer doing it on a jig. But if it's a one off, I do it on the flattest part of the shop, on jack stands, the car is leveled and with a mason plumb and tape on the floor, it makes it easier to take some measurements and visualize. Jag reproduction aftermarket parts are not too bad compared to some other car brands. There are some cars, I refuse to use aftermarket parts, I fabricate them myself because what is sold is pure garbage and a waste of money, for exemple on the big Healey any floor or chassis part, I'd rather fabricate them than buy parts that end up in the trash because they are so far off.

Took me back 50 years to when these repairs were commonplace. I enjoyed, but spotted the deliberate mistake of the Mk 1 alignment drawings on a Mk 2 job!!

As a consumer of the kind of work you do I have a better understanding of the restoration trade. Another thing that comes to mind is that you are able to do the things that most owners cannot do themselves. You also have to work on someone elses car as if it were yours as well as the owners vision and pockets as the requests and desires mount. Therefore the reality of todays costs can seem prohibitive to most people. As I always say " it's not for everyone"!

Much respect to you for the mammoth task of re-crafting the front end of this severely bent Mk 11. As an owner of a pristine 1959 Mk 11 it is hoped that I never have to request your services for such serious surgery, but I will certainly be aware of your capabilities if necessary. I was unaware that reproduction outer wings and bonnets are available. Thank you also for compiling this excellent account of the repair work.
