Doss-Marlowe: History in Sight
United States
Приєднався 5 бер 2021
Welcome to History In Sight! This is Jarred Marlowe and Andy Doss, and we are two history nuts covering mostly Southern Virginia historical subjects and anything else we think is historical in context and interesting. However, we will touch on some broader historical items from time to time. We love history and like to show how all sorts of things tie together.
We hope to share some valuable "insight" into what we show here in our videos, and put history "in sight" to everyone watching.
Please subscribe and help us grow the channel, so that we can continue producing content, and much oblige!
Jarred does a lot of the research and content; Andy does most of the video editing and production.

The Stone Theater | A Bassett Story
Once a vibrant centerpiece of Bassett, Virginia, the Stone Theater stood as a testament to the boomtown spirit of the early 20th century. For decades, this iconic theater wasn't just a place to watch movies-it was a community landmark that brought people together and reflected a golden era of small-town entrepreneurship and local entertainment. In this video, we take a look into the theater's fascinating history, its impact on the community, and why preserving its memory is crucial for future generations. Join us on this journey back in time to explore what made the Stone Theater a beloved symbol of Bassett’s past.

Outstanding history lesson
Thank you!

Well done sir!
Thank you!
Love the videos Andy and co.
Awesome video
Thanks for stopping by!
We usually went to the Family Drive-in for movies and once in a while to the Rives or the Martin or the Roxy in Martinsville, even though we lived a mile from Bassett. I remember going to the Stone only once. Someone in the balcony set off a firecracker and I thought it was a gun! I wasn't anxious to return. But I dearly loved Bassett, and it pains me to see what has happened to it.
oh my!
Andy, I'm gonna start calling you the "Ron Howard" of Bassett. Love all these documentaries you and your team are doing. A job very well done. Thank you so much for sharing all these stories.
I love their Gaither Christian album
Yes!
Love their music to this day!
we agree!
How sad that these historical monuments have been allowed to disintegrate. This history will be lost unless more is done to preserve it. It looks like many of the homes are already irreparable. Has no one else taken an interest in preserving this history? I read the book that was written about the Hairston family. It was very interesting. I’d love to visit these places.
Progress often has surpassed our desire to maintain history.
Responsible for the 16th amendment, income tax.
Where in Bassett is this?
This is near Bassett High School, adjacent to Collins-McKee-Stone funeral home.
She was, and IS, a true American hero. Thank you, Ms. Lacks.
Incredible...
When I think about all of these countries where people are starving and malnourished, I wonder why kudzu and other invasive edibles, including perennials, are not planted in those places as ever-growing sources of food for the people and animals. If it grows a foot a day as reported, the people in need will always have enough to eat. All parts of kudzu are edible, except the seeds and seed pods. The leaves, flowers, and the tender ends of the vines can be eaten.
awesome
Do Cassius Marcellus Clay next. It’s unbelievable that there aren’t tons of movies about him!
My Great Grandfather was born in that house. Henry Hairston Hurt.
i’m really curious on what the henry county school system used to be and all the schools that’s been used in henry county i was wondering if u could make a video on that is that’s not too much
That is a good idea. We will see if we can figure out how to cover that without getting too detailed, that's probably a deep subject.
Peter TP Hairston is in my ancestry tree as my 11th grandfather or so
I’m a double Hairston and I’m so invested in my roots
This sounds more like the reason that the USA colonies wanted to separate from the Brits.
You may be right!
this is a great story!
Fascinating. THANKS
Thank you for watching!
Thanks for the great information, please keep the video’s coming.
Thanks for the comment, and checking them out!
Beautiful video!!!!❤ Thanks for giving props to one of the greatest composers and musicians of all time🎉
Thanks for checking the video out; I stop by the memorial every time I attend the high point furniture market, it's amazing.
@yourhistoryinsight Glad to hear you have a great time at the furniture fair. On 9/23 tue at 12am WKCR 89.9 FM Columbia University radio will have a 24 hour birthday broadcast of John Coltrane music.🎂 Check it out if you can. ✌🏾
Thought I might have been in this one. I did several of those regional choir things around this time…and I see my cousin Ashley Vipperman prominently in this particular video.
Very cool - I sang on most of the songs, but on this particular song (which unfortunately is the only one I have a video of), I am playing the guitar. - Andy Doss
Thank you so much! I spent my childhood in Bassett and my teen years in Patrick County, with family connections to the Hairstons through my g-g-grandfather Willie Penn's sister Eliza who married Samuel William Hairston. This video has been a wonderful tour.
Thanks for the comment, we are so glad you enjoyed!
Thank you for posting this, Benjamin was my great uncle and he is still missed and talked about. ❤️
Very interesting!
Glad you think so! - thanks for watching!
do you have the raw video of this?
Unfortunately I don't. Wish I did as I would have loved to have seen more footage of my group. I checked some years later, and the TV station had wiped and reused the old tapes for other things - so gone forever. - Andy (I was the guitarist of Total Chaos that ended up winning, that's the only reason I ended up having this copy)
Ok, thanks. I figured. I was in the band that played the 2 Metallica songs and Anarchy in the UK. Thanks for posting!
@@carltonblanks8349 I remember you all playing those, I enjoyed that evening so much and hearing so many different people play was such a joy for me.
My all time hero! 🤘🤘🤘
Incredibly well done, as are all your videos
thank you so much for your support!
My Mom had her nose surgery there in the 90's and I remember going there with her after she stayed the weekend on site in recovery.
Very cool!
Wiley Post taught my Aunt Pearl Carter Scott of Marlow, Ok. to fly his plane when she was 14 years old. Her daddy bought her her first plane for her 16th birthday. She is in the Okey city aviation hall of fame
Wow! That's cool trivia!
I saw a magazine article about my hero, Will Rogers's ranch years ago and fell in love with it. I was living in my little farm in Michigan at the time and seriously thought about emulating Will's ranch there. I'm glad I didn't. Now, my wife and I have a little 60-acre horse farm in the middle of nowhere in Virginia. This place is a better candidate for Will's style, except for one thing, my wife would never stand for it anywhere except my one room in our place. Saddles? Yep, we've got them. Bridles? You bet. Halters? Uh-huh. Being a Cherokee Native too and according to my great aunt, I'm related to Will through the Vann family. I've gotta say, my roping skills have fallen off significantly, and I can hear Will giving me a tsk tsk tsk about it too. LOL! Wado is how we say thanks in Cherokee. So, wado for uploading this lovely presentation hosted by a favorite actor of mine, E.G. Marshall. 👍🏻🪶🪶❤️🪶🪶👍🏻
@@kiasax2 thanks for the comment, these EG Marshall specials were charmers, it's a shame they have been buried.
@yourhistoryinsight EG Marshall's voice and presence lend gravitas to anything. I'm sorry to learn that Mr. Marshall has specials buried out there, but you've given me a mission; to see if I can discover their hiding places on the web. Also, if I may ask should you find any other Will Rogers media, please notify me. I'll be glad to give you my Gmail address if that would be helpful. Again, wado for your kindness, which is in short supply these days, and why I often say we need another Will Rogers in our current day. Be well.
@@sidforbrains6552 That's an amazing story. Wado, as we Cherokees say thank you, for sharing your family history with us, it's very kind of you.
Are you related to them?
No, neither one of us descend from the Hairstons.
Very interesting.
Brigham smoked dude.
Awesome. Thank you for this.
Glad you checked it out!
Would love to visit Stratford Hall someday. James, from Kentucky.
Us as well!
This could totally be built in Minecraft or Minetest, complete with the waterfall and everything! Also, I really wish I could have a crack at cleaning this up, now that it's been digitized!
That's a good observation, I suppose it would be a good Minecraft scenario!
Is this where they hide the kids in basement cages 14 year's going on 15 I've still never gotten an answer Hmmmm
Anyone remember what year McDonald's opened in Collinsville by Biscuitville?
Good question. I am pretty sure it opened in late 1971. I saw your question, looked around, and found a "Now Open" notice for it, advertising itself as being across from the Holiday Inn.
Not sure, but I worked there in high school in the early 90's.
Pronounce Hairston correctly! If you know the history you surely know the correct pronunciation!
When referring to the owners of the plantation, they used the traditional Scottish pronunciation of "Harr-Stun". The enslaved peoples there and their descendants would come to use the more modern pronunciation of "Hair-Stun". Check out our video on the pronunciation we made a while back! ua-cam.com/users/shortsGwowP_-3JNo
Thanks, everyone for the comments - they have been....interesting!
The house probably has termites and asbestos.
This was just wonderful! Thank you for posting it here in you tube.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Well done, as always! Isaac Chrisman was my 4x-great-grandmother Jane Scott's first husband. After he was killed she married Nathaniel Hix and my line comes from there.
Wow - that's awesome!
THANK YOU for the info!!
