POV 1 Good Lap - Thunderhill East 24-05-13
Great to get back on the track. A little rusty and a little slow, but there is nothing like a track day to sharpen the senses and make you hungry for more.
I was able to keep my lap times consistently a few seconds below 2min 30sec, barely into B-Group pace, but as long as I was predictable and smooth the faster riders could pass me safely and I always find that riding with faster riders is a good way to learn.
S04 L06 Lap time 2min 27sec
My final lap was on pace to improve that time by about a second, but it was cut short by the checkered flag. Looking over my logged GPS data, I have plenty of opportunities to improve. But that's why we go to the track, right?
Bonus points for telegraphing my plans and holding my line when passed by better riders:
1:50
3:07
And for adjusting my line to allow an instructor and rider to pass safely on Turn 05:
1:02
It's not a race, and practicing good track etiquette is just the right thing to do.

Zen of Riding Goat Trails

Goat trails are challenging, technical roads to ride. They can be a little scary, but they are great for practicing precision riding skills, trail braking, being smooth on and off the throttle, and for sharpening vision skills and reaction strategies. What is a goat trail? A goat trail is a narrow, one-lane road used for 2-way traffic. This kind of road is still common outside North America, bu...

One reason why I prefer the back roads over the freeway is the comparative lack of nimrods out for a Sunday drive. This white car had been shadowing me, pulling up behind me, deking into the lane beside me, zooming ahead, then falling back, for miles and miles. Didn't matter what lane I chose. Same story. I mean, come on, little white car. It's Sunday. The weather and roads are clear and beauti...

A beautiful day for a ride on Skyline Blvd, going south from San Francisco. We had some heavy rain recently, so the roads were slippery with runoff and mud, here and there. the funny thing is the jeep was probably trying to accommodate you by going faster than they're used to because they can see you on their ass. they're trying to make it more comfortable for them because they have to deal with lateral forces so they are cutting corners a bit to keep their speed up... for you.

first of all, illegal pass. second, why were you in such a hurry to pass the jeep when they were doing the speed limit, just so you could break more laws and feign persecution? thirdly, it's quite a stretch for you to attribute malice to this person who was just cutting corners and not attempting to prevent you from passing. they probably didn't expect you to attempt to pass on such a dangerous and illegal stretch of road. i've been riding for a really long time and i'd put my riding experience up against yours any day. i've never encountered this mythical cager who won't let me pass.

You need to learn lane-blocking. When you ride in the far left lane, you need to position yourself in the right-side tire track, so that cars can actually see you when they look in their mirrors. Opposite for riding in the far right lane, you should ride in the left tire track, so drivers can see you in their mirrors. Don't hang-out in the middle lanes because you cannot lane block (can't be in both tire tracks at the same time).

I’ve have been thinking of making the change into B group, how are you liking it? Does it seem like riders are more predictable? Is it weird going from being one of the quickest in C to slowest in B? Sorry for all the questions just some of the things going around in my head

    • @jdp0rter
      @jdp0rter 2 роки тому

All good questions! I like riding in the B Group because of the things you mentioned. -- Riders are skilled within a similar range, so you don't encounter huge variation in speed or skill on the track. That's pretty huge because it allows me to shift focus away from always trying to read and predict the path of the rider ahead to just riding and figuring out what's going on with me, and what mistakes I may be making. Really positive in terms of allowing me to focus. -- Everyone is a better rider than me, which means every rider that passes me can teach me something in that moment. That's also huge. Just observing lines and just trying to follow people who passed me was a big eye opener and really instructive on my first couple of track days in B Group. Plenty of examples of "I had no idea you could go into that corner at that speed..." I worried about being a road hazard before making the change, so I made sure I was capable of riding a 2:30 lap on Thunderhill East before changing groups. I use the GoPro recordings to time laps after the fact. Once I met that bar a few times it was just a matter of being consistent, predictable and courteous myself on the track. Sure, I'm now the slowpoke and everyone passes me at some point in a session, but holding my line and keeping my speed changes smooth has made it OK for me to ride with B Group. So far, B Group riders have been very patient and courteous on the track. People have chosen good places to pass and I haven't had any negative feedback from other riders telling me I don't belong. And I have learned a lot, quickly, and have made improvements quickly, too. So far, it's been a great experience.

I Don’t have an app for data or have never used my bikes lap timer, but the last few times on track I’ve had some breakthroughs in break application. I know I’m going faster now and suspect that I’m close to your numbers. Following someone who’s talented is where I’ve made some huge strides. I think next time I’ll try and hook up with an instructor and see if I’m ready for B. Small safe steps.

Well, at first I thought it was rear wheel braking but after watching it more closely it looks like the front locked up. Wait for the weight shift I guess? Always lots of lessons to be learned in the C group on a track day. Bummer. Glad only ego was hurt.

If only a NORMAL commute still looked like that...

That was a pretty damn close pass for C Group.

Thanks. We were both lucky it was just a tire-to-tire clip. I was surprised how far right the front tire slipped before it regained traction. Didn't hit the dirt, though, so it's all OK. Hooray for traction control!

Hey bro do you have to take off your mirrors when riding there?

Depends on the track day provider. Thunderhill doesn't demand mirrors be removed. Most providers will accept mirrors taped off, to eliminate distraction. Personally, I prefer to remove my mirrors because checking them is a hard habit to break.

Ha! Maybe so. They help me learn from my mistakes, so I find them useful.
