Phil Whitley. My Week this Week.
United Kingdom
Приєднався 22 сер 2006
Documenting my workshop , machinery, projects and what I get up to as a retired electrical engineer working 5 days a week on the East Yorkshire Wolds. The wife insists I have weekends off! Never mind, Gives me chance to do internet research on engineering, and machine tools. I like to repair, refurbish, rebuild, innovate and even invent in order to solve problems in electro mechanical devices, and there is no small amount of tinkering too! I served an apprenticiship with a local industrial electrical contractor, and did three years at technical college, culminating in a City and Guilds National Diploma in Electrical engineering. I have been self employed since the age of 21, and have worked in many different engineering and non engineering fields. My last paid employment was as the MD of a wireless ISP company which I set up, which still serves many clients in out of the way places in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. I am 68 years old, and have dreadlocks down to my ar*e!

Roofing at 72! and Holbrook belt guard
Переглядів 4392 місяці тому
Hi folks, This week I make the belt guard for the Holbrook lathe, and make and fit the stop and the hold up mechanism. Some TIG and Mig welding, a bit of milling, but no Rapidor this week! Thursday/froday my old mate Richard Teale comes over, and we fit a new roof to the blacksmiths shop area of the workshop. This morning I am stiff as a board and ache all over, but it is done apart from the la...

Hi folks, eThis week starts with a sidetrack, a sure sign I need a break from the Holbrook project to get the creativity flowing again! I took one look at the cold damp weather and realised I would soon need to heat the workshop, and so decided to get to the bottom of the circulation problem and did just that, but what a game it was, and I am still not sure of the cause, though it was definitel...

Holbrook Drive system comes together!
Переглядів 4783 місяці тому
Hi folks, This week the pulley slipping clutch starts to work, thanks to some input from Gardentractorboy! I fit two belt guides and hey presto, the belt slip clutch works! I get a pivot made and fit a square "cam" to the end, and we have a system that moved the motor from drive to free in one movement! I struggle on through various interruptions, some more welcome than others, but end the week...
Holbrook, mounting the motor and getting it running!
Переглядів 9573 місяці тому
Hi folks, On with the Holbrook B9! I get the motor mounted and start to work on a mechanism to disconnect the drive without turning the motor off. What seemed to be a simple case of a slipping belt clutch, which I have used before many times, including on the 2CV tractor, doesnt work well in this application with much shorter belts and tighter wrap around the pulleys. I learn about the fabric c...

Hi folks, On the Holbrook, I set5 up a double pulley on the motor to give two speeds from the motor, which restores all of the Holbrooks 12 speeds, I get the motor mounting plate sorted, and set up a sliding system in order to select the two pulley positions, and basically, it is all falling into place. A visit to Haxby shed to meet Paul on his home ground, some biographical notes, and a look r...

Hi folks, Another short week due to hospital appointments and daughters returning to university with a pantechnicon load of stuff! We did it! Phase two, the motor mounting, clutch and brake assembly is begining to take shape in the noggin, and I am ready to mount the motor, I finally after much procrastination, fit the starter to the Rapidor, which is now fully automated and I can walk away fro...

Hi folks, Another week in the workshop, not quite uninteruppted, but I virtually finished the belt tensioning mechanism, and fit in a couple of side jobs as well, a quick repair on a part for an astronomical telescope, and watch to the end to see a quick tidy up of the workshop! Holbrook lathe countershaft support!

Hi folks, A whole uninterrupted week in the workshop! I get the majority of the build done, designing it in my head as I progress! The worst part was derusting the steel, the best was the welding AFTER I fitted a new contact tip! Also advanced two tech levels with the Rapidor, got the damper working correctly to lift the saw on the backstroke, and got the vice to cut at 45 degrees! Did an unsch...

Hi folks, This week we complete the final preparations for the annual Wicani Jamboree, which is a get together of dog breeders and owners held annually on the field owned by my cousin Keith and I. Hi folks, This week I strip the Holbrook countershaft and work out the sliding positions for the upper pulley to obtain the 12 speeds on the Holbrook, six selected by belt changing, and the back gear giving another six. Interesting to see the furnace Phil. I wish we could still buy electrical stuff from Vevor. I'd be having a few things, if we could. Cheers Paul
@@HaxbyShed hi Paul, although the Vevor furnace is rated at 220v it is not sold in the uk by Vevor! I though I was ordering from Vevor UK but it came direct from China, did one copper heat and the element failed! Vevor refused the warranty claim and said the element was a wearable component and was not covered! In the end they gave me a refund of about 75% f purchase price and I got a kiln element specialist in the potteries to wind me another element, and the furnace is working again! He did say however that the original setup was doomed to failure because to get the correct length of wire wound at that diameter left the coils too close together and thus it overheated and melted the kanthal wire! Also the insulation around the element, ceramic blanket, looked like it was made up of small pieces pushed into the gap between element and outer cover. When I reassembled the furnace I used one piece of new blanket wrapped around the element. Copper melting is pushing the furnace too its limits, but it does claim to be a copper melting furnace, and you dont expect the element to fail after one heat! It took severs calls and emails to get a settlement, but I was happy with the outcome so I didn’t go into scathing critic mode on them! Overall i is well made, but in this case at least, poorly designed and assembled. Phil
Hi Phil, that's interesting back story. My experience with Vevor so far is they are a pretty decent company overall. They have provided me with a number of products to review on Haxby Shed and my contact in Vevor in China is educated, polite, responsive, and dependable. They clearly don't make the products themselves but in my experience they generally take responsibility. Now I could mention some other companies that have approached me to do reviews, some big names, and they are definitely not like that. Cheers
Good to see you back in the workshop! Great heating arrangement.
Iv just changed my pump 2 days ago for the exact same one you fitted
@@jflwelding lets hope they are reliable! Time will tell, have a good one! Phil
Great that you're back sir! Merry Christmas!

It's good to see you back in harness, Phil. Have a good Christmas and New Year.
Fantastic to see you back. Nice Neil Young quote to open proceedings. Have a great Christmas Phil! Very best wishes to you, Carl.
Good to see you back Phil. That dodgy setup worked a treat. Cheers Tony
It is fantastic to see you back and I hope you are feeling much better. It was good to see the machining. Those starter gears are not too expensive to replace but not a great design. Merry Christmas and a Happy new year!

Welcome back Phil, good to see your still the right side of the dirt !..Del..
Glad to see you taking care of business. Have a wonderful Christmas and New Year. Charles
In my 50 years in British engineering I only saw one lathe having its bed reground and one having its headstock bearings scraped in with blue and scrapers. From1960s I think the accountants got control of businesses and they had no idea of the need for accuracy or quality and just demanded machines be run as much as possible regardless of the scrap and out of tolerance parts. I seem to recall Doxford name on onld factory beside railway line from Manchester to York.
just look how clean their machines are .
Hi Phil, I wish you a speedy recovery - think we"re a similar age - I was at docs 2 weeks ago for examination. Take care - miss your videos. John Johnson

Could you please tell me the dimensions of the brushes?
@@alexxustube I cannot because i am recovering from a surgical procedure and 10 days in hospital! If you measure the brush holder snd buy the nearest bigger size you can find you will not go far wrong! Phil
What was the mast for? I couldn't quite catch what you said... Wondered of it was HAM or CB radio perhaps? Hope you got that roof fastened down well, you can get a lot of suction in a gale. I acquired a brace of Rapidors this week one same as yours and a larger one, may try to get some video of them. The larger one has some problems, the small one suffers from slipping belt syndrome, a little belt dressing maybe?
@@seapy2398 it was originally my brothers ham radio and the also became the villages only internet connection as he had a satellite system which we used mesh to share across the village. I started a company called LN communications(langtoft. Net) which eventually became Boundless networks. Good luck with the rapidors, love to see some pics of them, or video! Phil
