I always thought there were at least 4 moon cycles in the base game: -pre oedon chapel (afternoon/dusk) -post oedon chapel (evening) -post amelia (night) -post rom (blood moon)
I think that is correct, but the first two look similar enough that I only drew one sun for them both
@VGCartography Fair enough! I only remember these different stages because the shop in the hunter's dream increases prices after every moon phase transition.

Dunno something about the map doesn't work. Great work from you but I don't like all the elevated land on the developers part.
I don't disagree, I haven't enjoyed it as much on replays. The dungeons are solid but the open areas don't hit the same way a second time. Didn't feel that way about the other games in the series

the forbidden woods is way clearer from above, i still get lost in the second half of it if im not paying attention. it's a testament to the level design that it feels so big despite not actually being all that massive

I don't think the ashen plain after the Ringed City is "the future." Rather, I think it's _the present._ The world _as it really is._ The world we spent Dark Souls 3 traipsing through is the world _as it was, in the past;_ held together by the dwindling power of the First Flame, and tended by the Soul of Cinder, who embodies the will of Gwyn, the one who committed the original (first) sin by usurping the natural order and forcefully perpetuating the Age of Fire. The ashen plain is the final state of the world, completely run down and devoid of any power the Flame can feed upon. After you defeat Gael, who is the last vestige of real power in that world aside from you, the Chosen Undead, the skybox goes completely dark. The smoldering bonfire at the end of all things is the only connection remaining to the world that was. The world that _is_ has fully succumbed to entropy. The ash has smothered out all flames, and there is not enough kindling to relight the flame.

Ds2 locations are very underrated, the problem is that they don't connect with each other as well as in other souls games

i didn't play Elden Ring but from what i can see DS3 maps lacks DS1 and DS2 complex connections between each other but singular maps are much more complex on their own, i'd argue they're also bigger and better thought out
I think that's fair. I didn't get into it here, but people have summarized an earlier plan for the map that would've connected some of these regions differently via a God's Garden zone near the broken bridge and shuffle some orders around with Pontiff as final boss. didn't get it put together in time, but they intended for more connectivity...
@@VGCartography yeah DS3 got lots of stuff chopped and rushed, like the infamous "God's Grave", iirc that was the name of the Demon Ruins during 2015 development. Archdrake's Peak was another zone full of cuts, including a giant tree boss arena, or the Colossal Dragon Mountain boss (lancemcdonald made a video about it)
man i played through this on release and just following along with this made me remember my entire playthrough more or less. in what order i did things, the areas i struggled with, etc.

Neglected to mention the breakable floor in Smouldering Lake, get the ballista to shoot it and you can go through the demon ruins another way and circumvent the sandworm

@VGCartography Yeah! I actually disabled the ballista before finding it so my save doesn't have it opened. That way in is why the Demon Ruins bonfire has that long L hallway before/behind it. And why it appears earlier in the bonfire list than the Antechamber, that's the "right" order to explore.

I've always applauded dark souls for being so open ended and allowing you to go almost anywhere right from the start. Which is why it's always baffled me that they put 4 completely arbitrary checkpoints that stop you from going the rest of the places. The 3 golden fog gates (Nito, Duke's archive, and firesage), and the gate into Sen's fortress. If it werent for those few roadblocks, the entire game would be accessible right from beginning, though a few places do require beating certain bosses, but notably, those are only skill based roadblocks, not literal "go do something else and come back later" roadblocks like the HMs in pokemon.
maybe they felt the Tomb, Izalith lava, prison section represented challenges that were too tough to retreat from without being able to warp. It would be cool to see routes if those gates didn't exist. I don't mind the two bells for Sen's as much, divides the game nicely
Absolutely fantastic work!
Bloodborne is the only Fromsoft game I stopped playing because i don't know where to go and keep getting lost.
