Subscribe to Global Travel Stories ua-cam.com/users/GlobalTravelStories and join the adventures around the globe! If you are enjoying this video/series please share us with friends and family on social media.
Join us on South America’s best wildlife experience in the Pantanal! This video is more of a wildlife documentary than a vlog, the Pantanal is known as the best Safari experience outside of Africa and it truly is a wildlife lovers heaven. We explore the world’s largest wetland and floodplain, where we encounter Giant Anteaters, Tapir, Capybara, Giant River Otters, Caiman, an Ocelot and countless bird species on jeep and boat safari’s.
We also snorkel one of the clearest rivers on earth in Bonito, viewing large schools of fish and visit South Americas largest sinkhole filled with nesting Red and Green Macaws. This episode was a huge undertaking for us and we are very proud of the outcome.

Introduction 0:00
Farewell Manaus 1:20
On our last dinner in Manaus we dine at the top restaurant in the city Bistro Fitz Carraldo where we try the fine cuisine of the Amazonas state.
Refugio da Ilha Jeep Safari 1:52
We head from Campo Grande Airport and arrive at the beautiful Pousada Refugio da Ilha, along the way spotting a Giant Anteater and horses. After arriving we have a spectacular lunch followed by an afternoon/evening Jeep Safari. We spot a Tapir, Capybara and many bird species before enjoying a spectacular sunset on the world’s biggest flood plain.
Refugio da Ilha Boat Safari 8:57
We awaken to a beautiful morning where around the lodge we are visited by Giant River Otters, Caiman and Hyacinth Macaws. We head out onto the Rio Salobra by boat where we encounter many more bird species including a nesting tiger heron, we get stuck in the Hyacinths, spot a reticulated freshwater Stingray, and watch a troupe of Azara’s or Brown Capuchin monkeys.
Refugio da Ilha Jeep Safari 2 18:25
After another phenomenal lunch we are greeted by some Blue and Yellow Macaws before we head back out on Safari by Jeep. Another great birdwatching event with far too many birds to list here, many of which we list in the video. We spot fresh Jaguar prints and have yet another spectacular sunset, finishing with an amazing dinner at the lodge.
Refugio da Ilha Jeep Safari 3
This morning we are greeted at the lodge by a large family of Capybaras and Turquoise Fronted Parrots before heading out on our morning Jeep Safari. This time among the many bird species we come across we spot 2 Toco Toucans in the trees, a Burrowing Owl, a crab eating Fox and a Marsh Deer. We also spot an Amazon Kingfisher and a Red Footed Tortoise before spotting the smaller cousin of the Jaguar, the rare and elusive Ocelot. We see a Great Black Hawk searching for prey on the forest floor and a family of White Collared Peccaries before another amazing lunch.
Refugio da Ilha Boat Safari 2 29:58
For the afternoon we head back out onto the river. Our first spot is a troupe of Azaras Capuchin Monkeys, followed by a Black Collared Hawk and a Tiger Heron chick in its nest. We witness a spectacular sunset on the Solebra River and finish with a troupe of Howler Monkeys, the world’s loudest land animal. The following morning we say farewell to the beautiful Pousada Refugio da Ilha.
Rio da Prata 35:01
From Rio da Prata Recanto Ecologico we head to Rio Olho d’Agua which has some of the clearest freshwater on earth. We begin our snorkeling drift tour spotting large schools of fish along the way, including Piraputanga, armoured catfish and the massive Dourado.
Buraco das Araras (Sinkhole of the Macaws) 41:56
On our way to Buraco das Araras we spot a Giant Anteater in the grasslands and an Agouti upon arrival. The sinkhole itself is the largest in South America and the amount of Red and Green Macaws flying and nesting among the cliffs was overwhelming. The perfect place for sunset.
Bonito 48:41
We spend the night in the hub of Bonito where we are greeted the following morning by 2 Toco Toucans and 2 Red and Green Macaws. The perfect farewell from the Pantanal.

Unfortunately we don’t do packing list videos, maybe one day but for now my attention is spent on making the best quality vlogumentary style videos I can. I believe we were both wearing North Face Future Light boots but we have both since upgraded. I have purchased some Mamut Gortex boots for our Everest base camp trip coming soon. The Inca Trail seemed fine in our standard hiking boots though, I wouldn’t imagine you’d run into any issues with something similar. Have an epic time on the trail, it’s amazing!

    Not in South America is Central America! 😅

    • @GlobalTravelStories
      @GlobalTravelStories 24 дні тому

      I know, the southern part of the country straddles the North American and South American tectonic plates. You are correct though the region is known as Central America from southern Mexico down to the bottom of Panama, that’s a regional definition rather than a geographical term I believe. 😊

    Thanks so much. This place is really on the map. I loved your commentary with information about the Keas and glad to hear that they are coming back a bit in some places. The weather you had was sensational. What time of year was it? Your insight about the glacier was a real antidote to the feeling of loss with the retreating ice. It’s the same in the places we visited in Alaska too. The idea that we are privileged to see it now as they will likely disappear is thoughtful. Best wishes

    • @GlobalTravelStories
      @GlobalTravelStories 26 днів тому

      Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm glad you enjoyed the commentary and found the information about the Keas insightful. The footage was captured during February. In the summer months, typically between December and February, the weather in that region is indeed sensational. It's bittersweet to witness the effects of climate change on glaciers, but you're right, it's a privilege to appreciate their beauty while we can. Best wishes to you as well!

    Guys Panama in its entirety is not part of South America, although sounds nice to say the bridge connects north to South America and you just cross them by going over the bridge, it’s not so. South America begins at the eastern border with Colombia in theory and in practice. Glad you enjoyed our patch of land, hope you make it back.

    • @GlobalTravelStories
      @GlobalTravelStories Місяць тому

      Loved Panama, my second time there, the first time I sailed from Northern Colombia where I used to teach English! Interesting you say that, I was lead to believe the Southern part of the Isthmus is technically on the South American continent. It’s certainly part of the South American tectonic plate, this is where I guess it depends on your definition. Geopolitically it’s recognised as Central America as whole but part of it straddles South America along the Darian Gap atleast (if not at the bridge of the Americas).

      @@GlobalTravelStoriesyeah bro, born and raised right here my whole life. Never heard of the city being in South America. Definitely that happens after the Darién gap when you hit Colombia. However I have heard other UA-camrs having that idea, which is kinda nice 😅

    • @GlobalTravelStories
      @GlobalTravelStories Місяць тому

      @@juanluiscarbonepicard-ami5379 yeah my guide mentioned it and google also when you search for the bridge of the Americas says it, but I’d say technically you are right regardless. I just did a search on tectonics after reading your comment because I was curious. Apparently Panama sits on its own micro plate between North and South America which I found interesting.

      Glad you enjoyed it! September you don’t normally need chains but some of the snow shots I got were from a freak snowstorm in Sep which can happen, however it’s very rare that chains are required on that road.. even in winter, they are pretty good at clearing it asap!

    Machu Picchu is the ruins of a city from the Incan empire that was built in the 15th century. The ruins are in the Andes Mountains, over 2,000 metres above sea level. Its walls and other architectural elements are cut into the natural rock. It’s not certain why the city was first built, although some sources suggest it was used as a royal retreat for the emperor, Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui. It is thought to have been used between the 15th and 16th centuries, but was gradually abandoned over time. Today, it is a very popular tourist site, so much so that the Peruvian government has begun limiting the amount of people able to visit each year to preserve it.

    That is an amazing trail with fantastic scenery. Who built it and when please. What was its purpose in the day that it was built. You need to be fit and energetic to tackle that. Enjoyed the video again and thank you for it.
