Stump the Stars
Приєднався 18 сер 2016
Created by producer/host Mike Stokey, STUMP THE STARS can best be described as "celebrities playing charades." Under the title PANTOMIME QUIZ, it began life in 1947 as a local Los Angeles game show before becoming a yearly summer replacement on CBS in 1950. After two summers on ABC in 1958 and 1959, it went on hiatus until returning for an entire season in 1962-63 with the new name of STUMP THE STARS (there were also brief runs during the regular season on NBC, Dumont, and ABC throughout the 1950s.)
When the season started in the fall of 1962, Pat Harrington Jr. was the host, but he was replaced by the show's producer/creator Mike Stokey on December 10.
Stump the Stars lasted only a single season on CBS, unable to compete with the popular Ben Casey on ABC. It returned for brief runs in syndication in 1964 and 1969-70.

Compare this 1964 syndication print with the original 1963 broadcast found here: ua-cam.com/video/XgmhQd8anSI/v-deo.html In 1964 a STUMP THE STARS syndication package was offered to TV stations comprised of 16 new episodes combined with 10 reruns from 1962/63. The sponsor for 1964 was Colgate-Palmolive which meant that reruns from 1962/63 needed all reference to Ralston-Purina's Chex cereal rem...

Love Sebastian Cabot ❤
I didn't know how smart Ross Martin was until this show. He and Hans were genius together!
Yeah, those two are pros at the game. I read an interview where Ross said he routinely played throughout his college years. ...and it really shows!
Sadly we haven’t seen any version of Stump the Stars or Pantomime Quiz since 1970. Goodson-Todman did simpler games like Showoffs and Body Language, but these kind of games don’t get audiences, for some reason.
Robert Clary and Ross together. I watched this years ago on UA-cam. I still have a crush on them.
This show needs to be revived. C'mon Fremantle!
The way Pat Harrington pronounced Lima, Ohio made people in that city fume, I’m sure.
This would be an enjoyable, light video to watch if all these commenters would not drag it down by making political speeches pining for the supposedly better times because people are wearing formal wear on this set. Nothing is preventing any of you from dressing this way if you wish to. Meanwhile, realize that Raymond Burr and William Tallman had to hide who they were, living under cruel stress. Burr even had to make up a story about a wife who had died. Today he would be allowed to marry, and be publicly true to himself. That says a huge amount more than what people are wearing about whether then or now is better. Now, enjoy this show.
Ruta Lee is still with us today! All the others are long gone.
Actually Connie Stevens is still around , going on 85 in August, cheers!
Been watching episodes of this show, and I love it!
Two catty old women watching this in 1963: I think Miss Garland makes a more credible Queen of the Nile. Especially the plump part.
Ruta Lee had a real toughie - hardly anyone ever knew that nursery rhyme.
Why does UA-cam have to put ads in the middle of the charade?
What snatched me as a teen was they all wore formal wear and looked so sharp.
Ill health knocked both Roger Smith and Richard Long off 77 Sunset Strip. Smith had a stroke and Long had a heart attack, neither of them 35 yet.. Very weird. (Smith got myasthenia gravis but lived until about 5 years ago in his 80s. Long died of his heart problems in 1974, age 47.)
I can't believe these people can actually act some of these things out and the guessers actually get them. Some of them are HARD. "Pine scented cockroaches???" And Long on his knees and his eyes so big trying to get them from roaches to cockroaches is hilarious.
they're so hard😢
Pat Harrington was awful as host. Forgetting a panelist's name?
Raymond was so handsome.
Thank you 🙏 for sharing
I love the way they just immediately light up cigarettes during the closing credits.
🥰🥰💗💗😍😍
So addictive, what a delight
This show is addictive, what a delight
Boy, was Barbara Hale, alias Della Street, smart as a tac!
So love this with Diana Dors
Why this is so entertaining,,,,it includes intelleigent banter done by intelligent people, quite a difference from today
Is there any way to get the episode from 10th December 1962 with the cast of Rawhide?
Excellent all around 👏 ...excellent commercial creation ...sells a "Boat Load" of cereal 😊
21:52 lmao them flying into the living room
Wow this is hard
I can't believe they deleted the Beverly Garland pantomime in this video!
I love it. I love Raymond Burr as well. I don't think they would get away with describing a Chinese person that way these days.
Hedy Lamarr was either extremely dense or temporarily deaf. It took her forever to realize her team already said Executioner. Hedley Lamarr would never have made that mistake.
Cedric Hardwicke was one of the worst players to ever appear on the show. He never even ventured a guess.
Beverly Garland was so charming and sexy on this show. Having her and Barbara on the same episode doubled the beauty and sex appeal.
They don't make shows like this anymore. What a fun and hilarious show that had its roots as a local show in Los Angeles before becoming Pantomime Quiz as a perennial summer replacement show throughout the 1940s and 1950s. Mike Stokey was a great host, keeping order among the celebrities.
Never seen any of these shows, terrific. This should be revived!
It's amazing how quickly the celebrities can convey difficult words with a minimum of action.
Mike Stokey was the producer of this show and had hosted all previous versions (which were known as "Pantomime Quiz"). After this version had been on for thirteen weeks, Stokey replaced Pat Harrington as host. Reportedly, CBS executives pressured Stokey to fire Harrington and take over the hosting duties again. While this version was on CBS for only a single season (1962-63), the show was revived with new episodes for first run syndication, first in 1964 and again in the early 1970's.
Pat may have been a little strident for the network‘s taste.
"Stump The Stars" was originally known as "Pantomime Quiz", and ran off and on (but more on than off) for many years. Although this version ran only one season (1962-63) on network TV (CBS), episodes were produced for first run syndication in 1964 and again briefly in the early seventies.
When this version premiered in the fall of 1962, Pat Harrington (today best known as a co-star of the late 1970's sitcom "One Day At A Time") was host. But Mike Stokey (who produced this version and hosted the previous versions) became host after thirteen weeks, supposedly because CBS was very dissatisfied with Harrington as an emcee and wanted a change. Stokey apparently had no choice but to fire Harrington and return to the host's role.
Perry Mason team won I think. Unless I'm wrong by 8 points
I. Never saw this show before it’s fun
Julie would totally be me playing this game. Silently observe and say little. 😂 When it was her turn to play though she did good!
Oh my, this is too good a show! On the last one when Beverly was doing the clue for the opposing team, it seemed like Richard and Michael gave up at that point. 😂
Hard to tell. They weren't on screen.
I enjoyed this!!
I loved Sebastian Cabot. 😻 💋
Never seen this before. It was fun! Thx for posting. Ross Martin was great! Mason cast too. 😂👍
Ruta Lee is the Most Gorgeous woman, such Class --God bless her-
How in the world did Ross Martin get Sebastian Cabot’s rhyme so quickly?!
Ross is amazing at this game. He played for years among friends while at college. By the time he was on Stump the Stars he had reached next level skills!
@@Greathall75: I had read Ross Martin was a very intelligent individual. Seems the same goes for Sebastian Cabot. I love this show.
Out of everyone on this episode, Mamie Van Doren is the only still with us.
