Headed up the harbour fishing just after sunrise. I'm using bait (kahawai) and barley to catch snapper in the shallow water (2 meters) in the harbour using the stray line method. After letting the barley soak for a while things start to pick up and I get some very good eating size snapper. Great day fishing in NZ! I've been boating for about 3 years now and I've owned two different boats. I thought it would be a good time to put together a list of some of the items I've purchased that have helped make boating a better/easier and safer experience for me. The items are listed in no perticular order. - Life Jackets are a must have. My favourite is my Hutchwilco Fisher Pro 150N. Perfect to add a bit more sto...

your vids make me bloody jealous mate :) . .i didn't see you burley up? . .you got all that action without it?
Thanks for watching mate! Na no burley with soft baiting. Just drift fishing. That was a really fun day out. Thanks again. Thomas.
Hey mate, those shorts are an absolute abomination and an affront to all that's decent in the world. Love 'em! Keep up the great work. I really enjoy your videos.
Haha love this comment! Thanks heaps mate and glad you’re loving my abomination shorts. Cheers mate. Thomas
Two year old video but I enjoyed watching it. Motor oil seems to be the one alright according to all the comments and other channels.
Thanks mate. Glad you enjoy this one. Yep they’re still my go to when things are a bit tough. Love them!
I just bought myself a 12 foot tinny, absolutely loving your videos. Very informative and relaxing.
Awesome mate! Been out fishing yet? Thanks very much for your comment. Glad you’re enjoying the videos. Cheers, Thomas
You're a lucky fella having all that on your doorstep. Ka pai.
I sure am mate. Gotta respect it and enjoy it while I can. Thanks for watching. Thomas
At least you are honest.
Not totally sure what that means sorry. Thanks for watching. Thomas.
Small bottle of fresh water (drinking and washing wounds), and a high calorie snack would be good too.
Yeah good call. I always have plenty of drinking water on the boat and normally those protein balls for a quick hit of energy. Thanks for the ideas mate. Thomas.
Normal conditions for Wellinton lol
Haha thanks for watching mate. Thomas
Hey dude, thanks for all the effort you go to with these videos. I really enjoy your laid-back approach to fishing and your genuine love of the sport. You make me jealous. I only get out salt water fishing a couple of times a year. Usually in the Marlborough Sounds.... One question... What is this "Spot X" that you mentioned?
Thanks mate. So glad you’re enjoying the videos. Glad you find them laid back. That’s totally my style out there. Just loving the day out really! That’s cool you get out in the sounds. Mainly blue cod, snapper and kingy fishing? Spot X are just my special spots that are either marked on my charts or locked away in my head. Places I’ve had success in the past really. Thanks heaps for watching. Thomas
Love your videos mate. Would you recommend the smartwave 4200? Im pretty interested but there isnt a seller in my sate here in Australia so I would have to travel to lay my eyes on one
Hi Craig. Thanks so much and I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos. I really would recommend it. So stable and very tough. They also have a very nice ride because they’re not as stiff as other boats. Really comfortable. Let me know if you need more info mate. Cheers, Thomas
@chasingacatch6017 Thanks for your reply. That's what attracts me to them is the fact how stable a safe they are for their size, very similar to the Australian made polycraft. Do you ever take anyone else out with you? Is there room to fish 2 or more people?
Max I’ve been out with is 3 adults and it’s been completely stable and while it’s not a massive amount of room it’s still been very comfortable. Strangely I also hit my top speed ever when I had 3 people onboard (27 knots).
Great video! Can't wait to get out there with you one day!
Thanks mate! The boat is waiting for you 🙌🙌🙌
Where do you recommend for servicing your motor? Seems like Kerikeri has more options but curious if you have a go to around manganui.
Hey mate. There is Wilton’s Marine right in Mangonui. I’ve not had a service done by them but have dealt with them and they were very helpful. I get my serving done in Kaitaia at Laurenson Marine. They’ve been very good also. I get it done there because they’re a Mercury dealer and if an official dealer does the work you get more warranty. Hope that helps. Cheers, Thomas
Love it bro ❤
Thanks mate!
Yeah! Glad you had success on this trip. Are Snappers always that pinkish color?
Thanks! They’re part of the bream family so do come in different colours. These are a type of red snapper so are always that colour. Thanks so much Jaci. Thomas
Hey Thomas! I had no idea what Berley even meant and I couldn't figure it out at first from watching the video at first so I was googling while watching you fish and realized that in the US they call that form of bait fishing apparently chum and in the UK they call that same thing "ground bait". Then continuing to watch you fish and some of the shots of the Berley I could start to guess that around the same time that you were mentioning throwing in little cubes from time to time. Very interesting to watch you fish in a new fashion. One question, when you later cut up a fish that ate your fish pieces do you find those fish pieces in their stomachs? Also sorry that I missed this when it first came out... I've been watching more Netflix recently so I don't always catch when you post, but I'll try to be better about it. I did the same with the last couple videos on Chasing a Plate and I hate to do that to you guys, plus I always love watching what you all get up to! 😂
Haha that’s cool you were researching and watching. Hope it gave you a good insight into this style of fishing. Thanks heaps for watching and no need to apologise! We’re so thankful for your support. Thanks so much Jaci. Thomas
Love it. Great session out there
Thanks mate. It was a fun one and glad it panned out in the end. Thanks for watching. Thomas.
I didn't realise you had a fishing channel Thomas. I love chasing a plate and when I first watched chasing a fish I was shocked as where you launch your boat my Dads old boat is on a moorning in the back ground. I love that area. My wife and I have brought a block in KeriKeri and can't wait to move home at some stage. Keep up your great videos on both channels and if I pump into you in the street I'll say hello as im coming back in September. 👍
Thanks for watching mate! So glad you enjoyed this one. That’s amazing you saw your dad’s boat. Do you get out on it much? Neat you’ve got land up north. It’s so beautiful isn’t it. Please do yell out if you see us. Thanks so much for watching. Thomas
@chasingacatch6017 . Dad had to sell it due to his health. We can't wait to move home at some stage Australia has been good to us but it's not home . Love your Melbourne eats those oysters. I will definitely say hello if I bump into either of you maybe even at the beach box . Keep it up. I love both channels. Mat
Thanks Mat for watching the videos it means a lot. Fingers crossed you can get up North one day soon. Cheers bro. Thomas
Are you supposed to set circle hooks? I thought you let it run for a few secs then just reel it in slowly and it sets itself
Hey mate. You don’t set them like you would a J hook but you still need to give them a little bit. You need to account for slack line, stretch (I was fishing mono), and snapper have some very hard bits around their mouth. I wasn’t giving it too much when setting the hooks. Thanks for watching. Thomas
@chasingacatch6017 thanks. On another note hows the boat for multiple people?
I’ve fished 3 with comfort and ease (all adults). Also managed my top speed ever when I was 3 up (all adults again) which I thought was interesting. I really like it. Let me know if you want any more info. Cheers, Thomas
@chasingacatch6017 follow up, how much did it all cost, and how much did you tell your missus it cost
Haha 🤣 gladly she was very supportive. All up its worth about 42k (it’s fully kitted out) but I got it new for less than that because it was built as a demo model and had done 2 hours when I got it. Hope that helps. Thomas
Nice!! Let’s see more videos like this mate
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks heaps for watching! Thomas
The fishing can be weird. I caught a 26lb snapper on slack low tide. Strange creatures
Wow that’s a catch of a life time. Congratulations. They sure can be unpredictable wee things can’t they! Thanks heaps for watching. Thomas
I've gone days and even weeks without getting a decent fish up here. Still reckon it's easy work down your way😉🐟🐟🐟
Easy if you’re good at fishing 😜 hahaha Glad that day panned out in the end. Thanks for watching. Thomas
Fish that your going to put back, should be treated with more care than being grabbed with a bare hand. A wet rag or tea towel.
I always wet my hands first and then softly hold them. There is a lot of thought out there that this is better than using a towel. I talk about it often in my videos. Thanks for watching. Thomas.
Lots of info about towel vs hands here and how a towel isn’t good. Cheers. legasea.co.nz/2017/02/28/fishcare/
What a perfect day. Great fishing and excellent results.
Sure was! Thanks for watching guys.
I loved it Thomas as I'm a keen fisho ,cheers Alister in OZ .
Thanks heaps Alister. So glad you enjoyed the video. Cheers, Thomas
I didn't even know you had this channel but now I will be going back over your vlogs and check it out Thomas.
Thanks mate! So glad you’re enjoying them. I really enjoy my fishing. Thomas
A basic tool kit like the 250$ one from supercheap aswell so you can solve/mend small problems
Great comment. I do have some tools on the boat and I really should have included that. Thanks heaps. Thomas
Must have got up and about early, not even enough time to change out of your Pjamas, xmas gift from mum were they?
Haha love a splash of colour to keep things interesting. You know what’s funny as about your comment….my mum did give me those togs for Christmas 😂😂😂 Thanks for watching. Thomas.

Haha I’ll trade him for a crazy hat 😂🙌

Thanks bro!
Nice content bro! Just subscribed to your channel ❤ have a peak at some of our missions in Auckland 😊
Thanks mate. I’ll check it out. Cheers, Thomas
9:45 good snapper bait the occy
Yeah hard out. So yum to eat too! Thanks for watching. Thomas
fish 2 rods if you can definitley burley like what your doing is kinda the bulk of it and just choose a good spot if you can good stuff well done
Yeah good call. I did actually have a second rod on the boat but with getting g used to it all, running the cameras and the fish biting anyway I never ended up using it. Thanks heaps for watching. Thomas
Thanks for sharing mate!
Thanks for watching mate! Cheers, Thomas
Fish pretty much where you are quite often. Usually a bit of a wade through the smaller fish, but eventually the bigger ones do turn up. I mostly use no weight at all
@@keastymatthew2407😂😂😂😂
Yeah good idea re no weight. The tide was running hard but wasn’t quite as strong as I expected. Thanks heaps for watching. Thomas
Always a bonus waking up to chasing a catch.
Thanks Don! Hope you enjoyed this one. Cheers, Thomas
hi can i ask about the boat , im looking at the idea of a true kit for a small boat alongside the kayak how did you find fishing from an inflatable , would you recommend it ? im just nervous of the idea of hooks , fish spines & holes would you buy an inflatable if you were to start over or was it a hassle to fish from ? thank you
Hey mate. Shape things near the boat is definitely something you have to think about. I always made sure to net fish and drop them directly in a fish bin. I’ve now got a different boat (you’ll see that in my latest videos) and it’s a lot my casual dealing with sharp and pointy things I must say. The TrueKit is amazing for the ease of storage and start up cost but does have some drawbacks when it comes to fishing that’s for sure. Hope that helps. Cheers, Thomas
Mate I would highly recommend a fire extinguisher. Saved my arse once
That’s a great call and it’s something I’ve had on my to buy list for a few months now. Thanks for the reminder I needed! Cheers, Thomas
I love this channel Thomas! I’m not a boater or fisherwoman but I can totally appreciate your instruction and I love watching your interest and passion and cooking. Keep it up can’t wait to see more and now I’m off to watch the west Chasing a Plate video!!!
Thanks so much Jaci. I love that you’re enjoying these videos even though you’re not a fisher. That’s really cool. Thanks heaps for watching. Thomas.
Epic fishing
Thanks mate. That was a nice day out. Cheers, Thomas
All you need is a 12 foot tinny with a good used 20hp outboard and 5gal tank. And a 5lt water container, your rod a reel and some bait. Thats all you need. $3000 all up including the boat. Oh and a $50 lifejacket.
Haha get amongst it! I do think some of the safety gear I mentioned is very needed to keep us boaters safe though and keep others safe by not having to come and save our butts. Thanks heaps for watching. Thomas.
More of what I consider an essential upgrade rather than equipment would be a second battery on the boat. You can do it.simply enough with a battery switch to select battery 1, battery 2, or both but that requires you to monitor battery levels and switch them in and out manually to keep both charged. A better system is to use an Automatic Charge Relay (I use one by "Blue Sea Systems" called "Add a Battery" but there's cheaper ones that do the same thing) which will detect if a battery's low and connect it to charge when the motor's running. That also lets you use one battery just for starting the motor and the other as a "house battery" so you can run the VHF, sonar, music, lights, anchor winch, etc all you like without worrying about the motor not starting due to a flat battery.
Good call and thanks for all the technical info. My engine does have an emergency pull start option which is nice for peace of mind also. Thanks for that and thanks for watching. Thomas
Welcome back Thomas. I’ve missed your videos. And miss my SmartWave
Thanks mate! It’s good to be back. Been trying to film a bit but weather and lack of fish has been making it hard. How are things going for you with the boat share? Thats a cool set up. Thanks for watching. Thomas
wise advice.
Thanks for watching mate.
Ive found a secret access for the concubines stops fights with the misses
Sure didn’t expect that as an addition 😂
a portable jump starter especially if you only have 1 battery
That’s a great idea. My engine actually has a pull start kit built in just in case so I sort of cover that one off another way. Thanks heaps for the great addition. Thomas
mint day!
