Amazing destinations, tips and travel guides - helping you to experience Japan better.
Hi, I'm Andrew. I live in Japan and I love taking the train to explore the country. Sometimes I take my Brompton folding bicycle on my journeys.
I especially enjoy visiting underrated, overshadowed and hard-to-reach destinations. I also like finding out about the hidden stories behind the destinations.
I've travelled extensively here, and I've visited every single one of the 47 prefectures. My favourite destination is Lake Towada and the Oirase Gorge in Aomori Prefecture.
People often think that it's difficult to travel in Japan, but that's not true. It's remarkably easy, almost all of the time. On this channel I want to share my trips with you, as well as my best tips and tricks to help you while you travel.

Great video thanks, We are travelling direct from KIX to Hiroshima, can this pass be used from KIX to Shin Osaka
Yes you can!
Hi there thank you for the information. We are planning to visit amanohasidate and ine end of this year. However we tried to buy Amano/Ine 2 day pass but seems it's no longer available on Klook. Could suggest where can we buy it? thank you
I'd just get it at the ferry ticket office in Amanohashidate. I think the tourist information in the station also sells it.
Im travelling with my 72 yo mum in April with Kyoto as our base. Would it be okay to just come back the ff day to continue exploring? Anyway, we are planning to get the JR Kansai Wide Area Pass + 2 day Amanohashidate/Ine Sightseeing Pass as add-on. Or do we have as option to go straight to Amanohashidate from Kansai Airport and just transfer to Kyoto on our 3rd day? We have our luggages though. 🤦♀️ Thanks for any advice you can share.
It's a 2hr one-way journey, so it is doable to visit on 2 days and stay in Kyoto. Might work better this way since Kyoto has many more food options in the evening. You could also look at staying in Maizuru which is nearby and a bigger place, also Fukuchiyama might be an option. Otherwise, a hotel near Kyoto station or Nijo station would be best.
@japanunravelled Great, thank you! Will check these out. I really find your vlogs sooo helpful.
if u couldn't find any napkins, u can ask staffs.
Konbini in the morning, Kobini in the evening, Kobini at supper time. When your living your best life in Japan, you can have Kobnini anytime.
Carrying cash or preloading your suica card, gives you an idea what you spent daily and at the end of the day convert it in GBP, $ to view the equivalent, rather than carrying your DC/CC, and paying that extra % that goes to your bank everytime you use it abroad! We are missing Japan a lot!
Exactly! Still waiting for the UK to get with the program and get IC Cards that work across the country.
if you are a fast walker, you must be from London?
Do I have to be from London?
Hahaha, love this. Its just like flying business class...once you've turned left upon boarding, its so hard to to back to economy!! We've just purchased 4 JR passes, Green Class, for our trip to Japan next month. We wont be back for a while so no regrets!
I know the feeling. Once you go Green, you can't go back!
Thank you for your videos. Very helpful 😊
You're welcome!
LOL this is great, I booked a trip to Kyushu/Okinawa for next year the other day. Thanks!

I'm in love with Kyoto next time I'll push to Saga Torimoto. My 12 days in Kyoto was not enough to see everything and I'm laughing when I see people planning only 2-3 days to do Kyoto :)
Totally with you on this. Lived there for 3 years, been going back ever since and still have places yet to see. The "6 days in Tokyo, 1 daytrip to Kyoto" itineraries have me rolling my eyes every time. At some point there'll be another Kyoto video, hopefully sooner rather than later.
thanks your video can i ask can i use this pass go to kinosaki onsen thanks
Yes you can!
i think the reserved seat in the ordinary carts on mizuho shinkansen has the 2 x 2 seating just like sakura shinkansen 😁
Thank you!
Great videos mate! Really informative and interesting to watch. Much appreciated 😊
Thanks for your kind words!
Thank you sooooo much! Exactly what I needed! Since my return flight from Haneda to Kensai on the JAL Explorer Pass is only 130 EUR, with this pass combined I will save around 100 EUR compared to 7 days Train pass. The only thing I'm not really sure about, will I be able to use the Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Kyoto when my starting and final destination is either of these two stations?
No, you can't. If you want to do that, you need to pay extra.
@@japanunravelled Thanks!
Hello I wonder if someone can help me figure out travel from Kusatsu Onsen to Nagano. I tried google maps but the bus information is in Japanese, I will be traveling on Dec27 for this route.
From what I can gather, there might not be direct buses from Kusatsu to Nagano City. The best I can find is to take a bus to Karuizawa, and from there take a train or the Shinkansen.
Hey Andrew, I’m planning to venture to Kii Katsuura for the water wall and cave onsen (stay for 2 nights) from Osaka, is it good to purchase the kansai wide area pass? Because the last day, I will be travelling back to KIX.
Hello - it's 14,000 yen for a round trip from Osaka to Kii Katsuura. If you use it for going somewhere else before heading here (seeing as it's a 5 day pass) then you'll definitely get your money's worth.
@ Thank you!
thanks man :)
Welcome!
Your videos are informative and really enjoy them for the most part. I just loathe the ending spiel "watch this video before you ruin your trip". I know you gotta get clicks but it gives off snake oil salesman.
Thanks so much!
Thanks for this video - very helpful
You're welcome!
The beer on Green Car is actually reasonably priced! (about ¥330). I had an aisle seat. And when I got up to let my neighbour out to the washroom, he bowed at least 4 times. 😅
Always a better class of customer in Green.
Thank you for your video explaining this. I went to the website, but I still need clarification. I'm interested in buying a ticket from Tokyo to Osaka and making a stop for one night in Odawara and two nights in Kyoto. Is this possible, or are Tokyo/Odawara and Kyoto/Osaka considered the same city zones?
The Kyoto/Osaka bit is definitely separate areas. I think you'd be OK with the Odawara one too.
can i go to niigata with this pass? from Echigo Yuzawa station
No, you need this: www.jreast.co.jp/multi/en/pass/eastpass_n.html
Love it! Excellent video and resource to share with our clients. Subscribed and looking forward to more. Regards, Gareth
Awesome, thank you!
When you say "order some yen" from the airport, do you mean withdraw it from the ATM machine or something else?
In the past I've ordered yen from Travelex, and picked it up at the airport.
Can i use the pass to get from osaka to kansai airport? What train would I take?
Yes, you can take the Haruka Limited Express or the Airport Rapid train. Both leave from Osaka Station.
Hi Andrew, great video and very informative. May I ask for your recommendation on itinerary for a day trip from Osaka to Hiroshima / Miyajima comfortably…Thank you..
Thank you! Biggest recommendation: take 2 days. You can't do both Hiroshima and Miyajima in one day. Personally I would take at least 3 and maybe head out to Kintaikyo as well. Very underrated spot not far from Miyajima.
Amazing video!
You are so kind!
Liked and subscribed. At the same time, I’m afraid your videos become popular and we will overrun by tourists! 😂
Thankyou! I don't think they will become quite as popular as the 'top' spots. Location has a lot to do with it, and lack of time for most visitors.
Another video of yours to save to watch again! Thank you Andrew.
Wow! This video is exactly what I’m searching for. I was gonna skip Kyoto altogether in our upcoming trip in Spring 2025 because I kept hearing about overcrowded tourists and the locals are being bothered by it. When traveling, I don’t like to be part of the crowd (the problem). I get irritated by disrespectful tourists and felt like yelling at them for their rudeness. I saved your video on my list. Do you have any recommendations where to stay close to these sites? Our family of 3 is more interested in culture, food and nature especially we homeschool our child. The best way for the child to learn is to mingle with the locals. Thank you so much Andrew.
To be nearer to local life, I'd recommend finding somewhere near Demachiyanagi on the Keihan Line. Or actually, anywhere in the north of the city. I don't have any specific recommendations. Airbnb might be a good way to go. The Nijo area is another option. A bit less crowded, more local life, and well-connected to the subway and JR. Have a look at my other videos, I have a feeling the destinations I pick are right up your alley.
Just got back from my 1st trip to Japan. My advice? There's a lot to discover away from the touristy places, it will take a lot of planning but it's definitely worth it. I ended up not going to Osaka at all, for example. Visit Naoshima and Amanohashidate if you can, you will not regret it The itinerary was mostly based on Andrew's recommendations. He's also been super helpful with me and other commenters. I feel like I should have paid for this service and i definitely will, when it's time to plan my next trip. Thanks and keep making great videos ❤
Thank you! You've made my year!
Great infos. I was 1st going to buy the JR West but this one will suit my needs better for the places I want to go to. I will buy a separate ticket for Kanazawa and it still will work cheaper than the Japan Pass
Have fun!
can i ride sightseeing trains like SL yamguchi with jr west pass?
You can ask JR here: www.westjr.co.jp/global/en/support/inquiry/
So good that someone has explained this in plain, simple English. Unbelievably helpful
Glad it was helpful!
Wha--Wait. My original plan was to buy a round-way ticket from Tokyo to Kyoto using the Tokaido shinkansen, and then being around Kyoto a couple days, then head to Osaka, picking up a Kansai-Hiroshima pass, so I could move around Osaka, visit Hiroshima, use the ferry etc, and return. The whole trip was planned to be a week long. But would it then be cheaper to buy a round ticket from Tokyo to Hiroshima, get off at Kyoto, spend two days there, get on the shinkansen again to get to Osaka (day 3), be around in Osaka, get on the shinkansen on day 5 (I think I have 6 days?), get back, get to Nara two days later, come back to Osaka that night, and get on a shinkansen directly to Tokyo (day 7)? I'd have 6 days to get to Hiroshima, 12 days to do the whole round trip, right? Or is it just cheaper to go with the original plan, since the pass covers local trains, and covers the train to Nara as well?
I'd go with your original plan. Having that pass is good for all your side trips that you may unexpectedly want to do when you get to Osaka.
@@japanunravelled Awesome! Thanks for taking the time to reply, I'll go with my original plan.
I booked green car for my first trip to Japan and loved every moment of it. I was wondering if I had made a mistake doing so, and apparently I have 🤣 Looks like I'll have to go green car every time now! Oh no! Anyway, I'm off to book green car again for my next trip to Japan!
Thank you so much for these gems. Today we were in Arashiyama and enjoyed both the temple (fantastic!) and the traditional street. We had lunch at the Katsukura restaurant … great find. Thank you for making our last day in Kyoto a memorable one.
Wonderful!
Having traveled and lived in Japan off and on since 1976, I think you're spot on with these tips. I'm going again in 2 weeks, so I've been perusing travel sites looking for places I haven't been. It drives me crazy to see most people doing the Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka route, perhaps throwing in Hakone. With the e caption of Kyoto (a personal favorite), there are so many more beautiful and interesting places to visit.
is there anything interesting in winter for Amanohashidate? I missed the autumn already (I haven't got paid yet so no money for now 😂) But I hope I will be ready by Jan or Feb tho
I think it's great any time of year. Winter's fun, especially if it snows.
Thanks for the detailed explanation! My Itinerary is Kyoto -> Osaka -> Hiroshima -> Hakone -> Tokyo Does JR Kansai Hiroshima Pass covers the tickets cost from Hiroshima to Hakone? I think it's still worth it even if that's not the case!
No, you'll need to get a separate ticket to get you into the service area, probably Kyoto or Shin-Osaka.
Can you make one with the JR Kansai Pass
I think I talked about it in this video: ua-cam.com/video/FXeZRqD-CdA/v-deo.html It's good for a couple of days in Kansai and flexible with the length too.
The first class seats are from Sakura Shinkansen right? So if bought my JR Pass from Klook, can I still avail that ride or not?
Yes, if you buy the pass from Klook the reserved seats that look like first class will be the same on the Sakura.
@ Thanks! Very informative video.
Thank you for this video! What do you think about visiting this island with 2 kids (toddler and a baby)? I think we can’t cycle than.
Very doable! The shuttle buses make getting around really easy. Have fun!
@, thank you!
Hello! I’m seeing the link doesn’t exist anymore in Klook? Is there any alternative since I don’t want to use cash?
You can get the pass at the ferry ticket counters and elsewhere. Pretty sure they take cards.
