Hi Andrew! I just wanted to say thank you for all the tips around Kyoto.😊 It’s been wonderful doing all the non touristy things and seeing some wonderful gems in this beautiful city.🤩
Honestly, you are the most hidden gem I’ve come across! What great info, I’ll be using it in March to discover more of Kyoto than I would’ve without this!
Thank you - I am going mid May to mid June and planning Osaka and Kyoto only with few outskirt day trips - your hidden gems are exactly my cup of green tea as a traveller 🎏👘⛩️🌅
On my recent trip to Japan, I followed so many of your suggestions for Kyoto and it was wonderful. Thanks a lot for this video, it definitely helped make our trip extra special. Due to the Cherry Blossom season, the routine places were excruciatingly crowded and your off beat locations offered such a great break from the crowds.
Thank you for sharing the Google maps links. Very thoughtful. As soon as you mentioned my favorite spot at Eikan-do I knew this was a good itinerary. My other favorite thing to do is walk down the philosophers path from Eikando to Kannon-do Ginkaku 👌 it’s not long (30 min long) but somehow always takes me 2 hours to finish. Can’t help myself but to stop and admire everything.
Wouldn't be much of a useful video without the links! The Philosopher's Path does seem to make you walk slowly and take everything in, I know what you mean. Actually I walked it in the snow last year and have the video. Absolutely wonderful experience!
This was FANTASTIC. I feel you travel exactly as I like to travel, suggesting off-the-beaten path treasures that you've found through intuitive and researched exploration!
It's really kind of you, thank you. Yes, that's pretty much how I travel - ignore the overblown and overrated because there's tonnes better value out there!
Thank you for this video. Will visit Osaka end of tnis month and will try to squeeze in one day in Kyoto and Ive been wanting to visit the not so usual tourist spot.
That's a great idea! Since you'll be short on time I recommend picking one area - plenty of picks across both Kyoto videos in Arashiyama for example. Have fun!
Loved your video ,I’ll be in Kyoto in March for 4 days and will definitely be checking out some of the places detailed in your video ,the flea marked looks very interesting, I’m staying at Kusatsu hot spring town for 2 days after my Kyoto visit ,I decided on Kusatsu after watching your excellent video ,keep up the great work and take care .
Thanks for posting this video! I just finished watching your video on Mistakes First time in Japan. Both very helpful videos! We’re visiting Japan this early April but unfortunately we only have 3 nights in Tokyo, then head to Osaka for 2 nights then Kyoto for 2 nights then lastly back to Tokyo for another 3 nights. I would like to avoid the chaos of crowds but since our time is very short at these places in Japan, could you recommend any hidden gems at these cities that won’t take too much time to traverse in between sights? I love history and nature and can’t wait to finally visit Japan! Thanks in advance for your time and recommendations! Sincerely appreciate any help!
Sure! From both of the Kyoto videos: Adashino Nenbutsu-ji / Saga Torimoto and Giou-ji are all clustered in the same part of Arashiyama. You can also go to Uji by Keihan line and stop off at Fushimi-Inari on the way back. I recommend going later in the day or evening to avoid the crowds at both. Honen-in, Eikando and Tenjuan are also near to each other. With Osaka and Tokyo there's a fair bit of travel time between places, and good luck if you want to visit there without encountering crowds. Most places I recommend are day-trips from those cities, but that's not much good on a limited time schedule.
@@japanunravelled Thanks so much for your speedy reply and recommendations. I’ll them to my notes! Again, a million thanks for your immediate attention and help! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Such a great video! I've been to Kyoto a few times and need some ideas to see something different for when we're back there in March. Thanks so much ❤️
Hello, just wanted to say thank you for these videos and bringing light to the roads less traveled. Im hoping you can make a series of underrated gems specifically for the winter season in Japan. I figured it would go well with the theme since that seems to be Japans least crowded season.
I'm bingeing all your videos in preparation for my first trip to Japan in mid-February. Byodo-In has long been on my list of places to visit as I grew up on Oahu right next to Valley of the Temples where there is a half-sized replica of the temple. Looking forward to seeing the original!
Hello!! Another great video! Some really nice tips. My favoritet are number 10 & 4! Hope to be there taking ap photo with a 10yen coin ;) Thank you and keep up the good work!!
@@japanunravelled well we had to change out plans a bit, so in short we will go in winter (early Feb 2025) rather than autumn. So we will check the Sapporo snow festival dirst and then went down the country.
Literally just added ten more things to my ittinerary hahahah Thanks for thetips! I've been searching for these things. I'm checking out all your vids.
I can confirm pagoda in Eikando has a great view, but the whole temple is impressive. Adashino Nenbutsu-ji is also great and there is another bamboo forest within the temple. I think Arashiyama could easily get it's own episode as the whole area is extremely pleasant with long history.
Thank you so much for all the information! Can you recommend a Kimono rental place close to one of the hidden gems? We will be staying near Kyoto station
Funnily enough I've never worn a kimono, so can't recommend anywhere. Putting "kimono rental" into google maps shows most shops are around Gion in east Kyoto, although there's at least one a short walk from the Kimono Forest in Arashiyama. See which works for your plans!
Sadly i wouldn't be able to go to the flea market next month (i'm going to nagasaki on february 24). Or maybe i could go on the other date you mention. let's check these info in the description! (Edit: they are a lot of stuff, thanks you so much for the information! : ) Also i'm planning to visit the Kitano tenmangu shrine to see the Plum blossom garden of february. I think it will not be as awesome as an hanami but it seem worth a visit . Side question: Hanami is only used for sakura or can it be used for plum as well ? Thanks you for the very informative video as always!
There's a PDF linked in the description for ones in Kyoto, and that's in English. Otherwise, try this page using autotranslate in your browser: fmfm.jp/
Hello, I'll be in Kyoto from the 10th - 14th of March. Are there any Flea markets going on around then? I'd love to see any local ones during my visit.
Not exactly a “flea market” but you may want to check some shops in the pedestrian streets surrounding Nishiki Market. There are a few vintage stores around
Google Maps pins for all spots & flea market info in the description!

Another video of yours to save to watch again! Thank you Andrew.
In Kyoto and just bumped into another subscriber in the Bamboo Forest - just us and a Japanese Wedding ceremony! Fantastic.
That is so exciting to hear! Thanks for the report!
How gorgeous 🥰

I agree. Some of these places are awesome. Thanks.
Best channel for Japan. You are amazing.

Love this type of video! Added a few new pins to my map! Thank you!!
Glad to hear you liked it - it was huge fun making it too.
I’ll have to wait until November, but I‘m already looking forward to beating the crowds a bit on the hunt for these autumn colors; thank you so much!
I hope it's an excellent trip!

Thanks! Oh yeah, there are quite a few places for the winter. I'll put it on the list, so thanks for the suggestion.
Liked and subscribed. At the same time, I’m afraid your videos become popular and we will overrun by tourists! 😂
Thankyou! I don't think they will become quite as popular as the 'top' spots. Location has a lot to do with it, and lack of time for most visitors.
Such a great vid ❤
Thank you for your kindness!

Oh thanks! Yes, when researching I found out about the replica there, very surprising. I hope you have a brilliant trip!
Going tomorrow. This was very helpful and insightful. Thank you :)
Glad it was helpful!

Fantastic videos. Thanks so much. Is there another link for all the Google Maps pins. The link below seems to only to UA-cam not to Maps?? Thanks
Glad you liked it! The pins are in the description, not the pinned comment. You might have to hunt for it if you're on your phone. Hope that helps!
A lot of these temples you shared are recommended to visit during fall for the colours. Would going in winter still be good?
Yes, of course! I select the places based on how great they are whatever the season.
Thanks. Found the pins.
Glad I could help! Have fun!
Very helpful. Does Cafe Independants still allow smoking?
No idea I'm afraid!

If you live in Kyoto, you should have enough material for many more episodes of the "hidden gems". I'm looking forward to it!
Oh, the next one is on the way, but you may have to wait a while!
Sadly i wouldn't be able to go to the flea market next month (i'm going to nagasaki on february 24). Or maybe i could go on the other date you mention.

I think it's only for sakura. For me at least, Nagasaki beats any flea market, so enjoy!
Another flea market to visit? Sandly, I'm not visiting Kyoto near 25th, but i loved the idea.
There's a PDF linked in the description with more flea markets listed. Otherwise, pay a visit next time!
Do you have tips for finding flea markets in Japan? I would love to go, but I can't read japanese so I don't know how to find one.

Is there a moss temple / tea house at the end of philosophers path? I’m sure I’ve seen you speak of it?
Not sure. Is it perhaps in the other Kyoto video?
