Fitzroy Island vs Green Island: Best Snorkeling Spots & Secret Tips (Cairns, Australia)
Fitzroy Island vs Green Island: Which Cairns snorkeling spot wins? We hiked Fitzroy’s summit in Birkenstocks (yes, really), compared secret snorkel spots, and uncovered ferry hacks (spoiler: turtles galore). 🐢

We timed hikes (1h45m vs the “4-hour” myth), tested snorkel zones, and debated Green Island’s 1770s naming origins. Spoiler: Fitzroy’s lighthouse trail is better than the summit steps...

    I'd still use hiking boots in that terrain, especially with ankle protection. But to each his own.

    Normally we would agree that a hike can be done quicker than estimated...but not in Australia 😂The heat and humidity is just too much! Love the excitement from Josie after seeing the first turtle 😊 Makes us want to get a couple of pairs of flippers and find our nearest place to snorkel!

    • @JamesandJosieTravel
      @JamesandJosieTravel День тому

      Hahahha that’s very fair! The heat here is crazy! It was honestly such a surreal and incredible experience to be so close to a turtle just doing its thing as it naturally would! If you can make it to either island definitely go and experience it for yourself, it’s worth every penny! Where are you guys based? - Josie

    You next task is to walk around the island of Australia... And I want you to time it Josie... 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 If you get sunburnt...wipe on Methylated spirits with cotton wool buds...it WILL take the 'heat" out of the burn and severely cool you down. plus the alcohol will kill germs and bacteria on any broken skin as the result of blisters, etc. It won't sting if the skin is unbroken it will just cool you down. You'll love it. My mom and dad di this too us after every day at the beach.

      @JamesandJosieTravel День тому

      Hahahahah okay maybe one day when we level up our already pro hiker status 😉 and yes of course I will time it, could never not challenge a stated walking time so I will challenge Google maps too 😂 This is a very interesting method… I can’t tell if you’re pulling my leg or not though as I’ve never heard of methylated spirit being put on skin… but if you’re not joking around then this is very interesting and a new one! If you are however pulling my leg then fair play because you have me wondering 😂😂 - Josie

      @gbsailing9436 День тому

      @@JamesandJosieTravel I am NOT pulling your leg. Did I NOT tell you my Mum and dad did this to us when we were growing up? This is a huge favourite of mine. Oh yes some people will complain it's not good for your skin, but they are the sort of people that drink (ingest!!!?) more alcohol than they would wipe on their skin for this relief! But it does work and feel great. The first aid for a burn is to 'cool' the area down. Your skin evaporates naturally all day every day, but because alcohol evaporates so fast it has the magnified effect. It really is good. Do try it with a small bottle...keep it in the car - it's good for cleaning all sorts of things.

    Great episode guys!!! So much info on this one. SO good you plead with everyone to not stand on the corals Josie. But also tell everyone NOT to pee in the water...go behind a bush if need be before you swim. it takes 500,000 litres of water to return sea seawater back to normal background levels after a single episode of someone dumping their bladder!!! Shame you guys didn't reach the summit, better luck next time. I love the way you have to make a mole out of every mountain on each walk you do - awesome! And the commentary is great too! Perhaps Josie can breathe on your snorkel at the Nuddy beach James...? Good luck with that. 🤣😎

    Livin' the life I see. Such a gorgeous part of the world up near Cairns and the reef. Just the thing for a pair of pro hikers and snorkelers like you guys. Heartbreaking how much dead coral there was though. I hope Birkenstock come through with a sponsorship 😊

    • @BradSimmonds-j7o

      Fitzroy Island is not a coral cay, coral does not naturally grow there. The dead coral they would be referring to is what naturally gets broken off from the reef areas from storms. It's a natural occurrence that has been going on for millions of years, it is not heartbreaking.

If you’re after that true rainforest experience, I’d go with the Daintree! A Croc Tour (like the one we did) is a must-your teenagers will love it. You can also book a Reef Tour from Cape Tribulation, which we skipped due to bad weather but would’ve loved to do. We hope this helps you. What else do you have planned for your trip? 🙂 - James

    It's so different from when I lived there 35 years ago. It used to be dirt road all the way from the Ferry. I lived at Coconut Beach, helping with building the resort there, before moving up to "down town" Cape Trib. I used to help friends with their business, taking tourists on guided horse rides around the district. Good times, fond memories. :)

    Thats a cheap windscreen we just paid $1800 to replace the one in the wifes Mitsubishi Eclipse X because we didnt have glass coverage. It was only a stone chip but it was bigger than they could repair and it had cracked. They advised me not to break the windscreen in my Jeep because apparently they cost even more to replace. We have glass insurance on the Jeep because we use it for towing our van and are often travelling on outback roads.. Once they start putting all sorts of sensors in the glass they become quite expensive to replace and they also have to do a recalibration after fitting it. Depends on how much longer you intend being on the road but adding the glass coverage option to your insurance may be worth looking into.

    • @JamesandJosieTravel
      @JamesandJosieTravel 15 днів тому

      Oh wow this is crazy money compared to our replacement, we will count ourselves lucky but I suppose a 2005 X-Trail doesn’t have too many bells and whistles! 😂 swings and roundabouts on that one lol! Yeah I would definitely take out insurance on yours with that price!! I didn’t even know windscreen refitting could be so complicated that’s crazy!! The small roads are the worst for it with all the road trains it’s often unavoidable too!! 😭 Will definitely look into the insurance on it, might end up being more money than the windscreen is worth for ours though maybe but it’s definitely worth investigating further! Thanks so much for the tips and we wish you guys no more cracked windscreens in 2025 😂 - Josie
