Meteor Crater, Another "Must Stop" Along Rt. 66, America’s Mother Road
Who knew the iconic U.S. Route 66 also offers a geologic must see?
Wayne Gerdes - CleanMPG - July 3, 2024
Meteor Crater is a stunning natural landmark located just 18-miles due west - as the crow fly’s, of Winslow, AZ just off I-40/Rt. 66. While I have passed Meteor Crater tens if not over a hundred times wondering what was out there, it was time to find out what all the hubbub was all about. It is a huge crater alright. An oblong formation first thought to be formed by volcanic activity, it measures approximately 5,000 ft across from side to side and 4,000 ft across when measured from the visitor center to its furthest edge looking forward. It also measures almost 600 ft deep and to this day, it is one of the best-preserved meteorite impact sites on the planet.
From the various presentations offered at the visitor center, the crater was formed approximately 50,000 years ago when a 100,000-ton, nickel-iron meteorite estimated to be 150 ft in diameter, collided with the Earth at a speed of 30,000 mph. Beginning in 1890s, excavations to extract the valuable minerals have proven fruitless as most of the meteorite was vaporized in the blast...

A short vid showing a small slice of my time with the 2022 Kia EV6 while charging on a 350 KW Electrify America charger. On an EA 150 KW DCFC in Oceanside, CA, the EV6 charged from 5 to 80% in just 21-minutes. During that charge, the charge rate was still above 165 KW at 68% SOC and 133 KW at 80%. Amazing! It charges even faster on an EA 350 KW DCFC but in this instance, there was an atypical f...

    funny they don´t crash test against smaller cars, Like Opel Corsa or Ford Fiesta.. And if they did, they will be crushed.. and DIE... but safty rating is net ment to them outside the Volvo, they will LIVE and have a nice safe life. as Volvo qoute "noone going to die in ourr cars", but volvo don´t care about the other car survived. I don´t mean Volvo is a safe car at all.. even then we see the front wheel crash test, it nearly bend... seem like volvo has forgot there is a crash part that also have to LIVE after a crash with a Volvo. but it dosn´t matter for Volvo.. like mecedes 600 SEL a 2.6tons car, can crash into a Opel Corsa and people in both survive.. that WILL NOT HAPPEN with Volvo.. ua-cam.com/video/3Hk6y8avBI8/v-deo.html&ab_channel=HighSpeedRider

      Can go fully electric around 2-3 km. If you’re lucky and the battery is also healthy you can go 4km. And if you uprade the battery to a more powerful one. Ofcourse you can do more

    Wayne, what are ways to hypermile an EV given the regen capabilities?

    • @CleanMPG
      @CleanMPG 2 роки тому

      Hi Clash, great question!!! Only use regen when it is absolutely necessary. Any excess regen is lossy. For example, let us say you were in one-pedal or strong regen mode in any particular EV, you let off, and had to reapply accelerator to get to the light, sign, or impediment. The regen absorbed would not make up for the reacceleration and you would have consumed more energy than gliding in with light regen to the stop. Use regen cautiously. Plan your stops far ahead when possible and glide in is the most efficient way to use regen. IHTHs? Wayne

    • @clashwithneo
      @clashwithneo 2 роки тому

      @@CleanMPG Thanks, yes it helps. Now in an event where you have severely limited regen due to cold weather, would it makes sense to hit the brakes as soon as possible when a light turns red so that the very limited region can occur for a longer time (since you will be traveling slower) that allows you to regain more energy?

    • @CleanMPG
      @CleanMPG 2 роки тому

      Hi Clash, there is a technique I call smart braking that saves the most kinetic energy. This may help. There is a red light ahead. If you coast in, you will come to a stop. A large amount of energy will be necessary to get you back up to speed. Same scenario but you regen - albeit limited if the pack is cold. Same result at the end with a large amount of energy is necessary to reaccelerate. The best approach is to use a larger amount of braking early to decelerate from 60 mph to 30 mph and glide into the stop. If you time it right, you may still be holding onto 20 mph when the light turns green and you accelerate back up to 60 mph using the least overall amount of energy. Not exactly what you are looking for but I use it to time lights all the time with a high probability of success. Wayne

    • @clashwithneo
      @clashwithneo 2 роки тому

      CleanMPG Thanks Wayne, this method works very well, it is especially satisfying when you don’t need to step on the brakes at all, and lose little speed. Once I cruised through light at 35 when the speed limit was 45 so that was great
