5 Reasons I bought a Veritas Drill Press Table (and one reason I should have built one)
Great review Ryan. The popular 'name brand' Shelix has only 40 blades so I would think these Chinese heads with 60 would especially be (marginally) smoother especially for highly figured woods. A quick Amazon search shows several of these appearing identical from different sellers. So if it goes in and runs with out trouble, than there may not be much to worry about for a warranty. If blades start chipping prematurely, another seller probably has replacements.
Very timely as I’m about ready to purchase a helical cutterhead. My main concern about going with the Findbuy Tool version is whether they’ll be around in years ahead when I need to buy replacement inserts. I don’t know much (anything?) about the inserts, so I’m not sure if this is something valid to be worried about. Would Byrd Shelix inserts fit this planer bar? Thanks for the great video!
That’s a good question. I guess I assumed they would be compatible across all similar heads. But I’m not 100% sure.
Thanks for the review. I just bought the same planer few months ago. And will most likely do the Fine buy cutterhead upgrade. Seems to be of good quality and cheapest price on the market.
It really does transform the planer. You won’t regret it!
Nice work .
Spinder sandle 😂. Great shop!
Good video , with a few suggestions from a production wood worker. Never wear gloves and long sleeves around machinery in a wood shop. With regards to you’re snipe issue, you need to adjust the height of you’re infeed and outfeed tables. Do you’re self a favour and buy a used 6-8” jointer, it is a must for any rough lumber woodworking, and is way safer that what you are doing on the table saw.
Thanks for the feedback! I've mostly ditched the gloves. :) I did end up getting a used 8" jointer with a helical head and it really has been game changing.
Very helpful. I think as you develop your hand tool skills you see the value of using hand planes and cabinet scrapers in lieu of sanding to the extent possible. Nevertheless nothing wrong with having a good sander until you get there.
Hand tools are so much work! ;) You are right though. I borrowed a couple planes to flatten some big barn doors I did and they were awesome.
Good video .... whats your thoughts on them being face grain cutting boards?
I’m not convinced there is a difference between “edge grain” and “face grain”. I’ve never used an end grain cutting board so can’t compare. I’ll make one one day. The boards I have made all seem to hold up well and perform good! Plus I think the way they look is amazing. :)
@@ryandaywoodworking Well the defiantly do look amazing... I've only made edge grain and really only causes I always heard they were better and a few end grain they say is the best... but honestly I don't know
Would you mind if i ask what you sell these for
I just try to recover my costs. I haven’t found a good way to market smaller things like this that works.
Your Scraper at 2:55 look a lot like a beekeeping knife tool.... is it?
Nope, just a scraper I got from Home Depot.
@@ryandaywoodworking I tell ya what... Being a woodworker and a Beekeeper.... I never thought of using a hive tool as a scraper in the shop. It is sharp and handy.... lol
Great video man. The juice groove depends on what we are cutting. You should have a separate board for meats and veggies. Juice grooves are for meats and without for veggies. It's nice to do it this way in my kitchen so we don't mix up which board is which
Thanks for watching!
I have a similar sized job site saw and I can find no information anywhere of how much you can pull the miter express back? How wide are the boards you can crosscut with this? What is your experience on durability of this? Greatly appreciated 🙂
It's done beautifully, but there are some "newbie" mistakes :) 1. The working area and the table area are not the same thing. The working area where the material is processed, but the material itself and the place for fasteners can be larger. And they should be larger so as not to reduce the working area. 2. It's good to have a sacrificial layer that will be damaged when cutting the material and fastening parts with screws. That is, I suggest gluing one or two more layers on top. They can be gradually aligned during the work and new ones can be glued. And not redo the entire table with T-slots. Good luck in your future work :) P.S. The simplest and most functional table for a CNC hobby made of plywood with embedded nuts, in plan from 4 parts that can be processed on the machine itself. in my opinion.
Thanks for the feedback! For 1, I thought you wanted the area of the spoilboard to match the cut surface so that as you use and surface the spoilboard, you keep everything on the same plane. If the spoilboard was bigger than the area that could be surfaced, wouldn't you end up with a ridge around the edge? This would be a problem when working with materials larger than the CNC, for example engravings on wide boards, right? For 2, my intention is that these MDF strips are the sacrificial layer. As they wear down, it's easy to replace the strips and re-cut the screw holes and dog holes. I decided not to do embeded nuts as I wanted this to be fast to replace the strips in the future as the spoilboard was used up.
@@ryandaywoodworking 1. no, a little trick :) the working area for cutters of different diameters is different, and it is slightly larger than the spindle travel. what you marked with the tip of the V mill is not the working area, but the axes of the router travel. my main mill for cutting are 3.175 and 4 mm, and the mill for leveling the surface is 38 mm in diameter. therefore, by making the consumable part of the table wider by 18-19 mm, I can bring it to a plane without steps along the edge (only a little at the corners, but can cut it there) and taking into account about 2 mm when cutting per milling pass, I will have at least 10 mm of space left for clamps, which will be outside the cutting zone. 2. I did not see the fastening of the T-slots to the base, it seems that they are held by MDF strips, and the thickness of the sheet above the slot is small. That is why I advised to add the thickness of the MDF in advance. There are no problems with replacing the sheets and in the solution with nuts, since the nuts remain in the lower layer, or even in the base of the table, and the upper layers with holes are changed, or the strips are generally cut already cham shah between the bolts and glued on top without interfering with the clamp bolts. Your solution is also good, but it requires much more tools for manufacturing.
1. Of course! That makes total sense. I'll absolutely do that for the next iteration of this. Thanks for sharing! 2. Understood here. You are correct, I didn't fasten the T Track in the video as I didn't have the right screws. I've since done that. I tried to call that out in the video, but in hindsight I should have had the screws and done it completely in the video. :) Thanks again for sharing! Lots to learn with this new tool. :-D
@@ryandaywoodworkingand also make an attachment on the router for aspiration. dust is the worst enemy for rails and lead screw. Makita is inconvenient because it blows sawdust with air from cooling. So it is better to make a deflector in the attachment and direct this air to the side and up. so that the aspiration removes only sawdust from under the cutter and does not fight with the air flow from the Makita. with a deflector, the power of a 12v 6a computer centrifugal cooler is enough for me to aspirate. It is much quieter and more economical than a large aspiration. and, frankly speaking, this edge router is not a very good solution for CNC. bad collets (only one cone with a large angle, poor clamping) and they are not available for the common sizes of CNC cutters. think about replacing it with a router with standard common collets, for example, type ER.
I have started looking at spindles, specifically watercooled ones to keep the noise and dust down. The kit that Sienci offers for the Longmill includes the Makita router, so I'll use that for now. I have a dust boot, I just need to print an adapter to connect to my dust hose.
Nice shop and nice walk through!
Thanks 👍
I prefer to make with WoodPrix plans.
What’s that?
Hi! New subscriber here. You mention at 14:50 that you were able to fix the snipe on your dewalt planer. Can you elaborate on what you did to fix this issue, please? I have the same model and getting snipe on every pass. Any insight is appreciated.
I don’t have a great answer… I aligned the tables pretty carefully to make sure they are perfectly level with the base. I then adjusted the outside of the tables so they are ever so slightly higher. That worked for me for a while, but a bit of snipe has returned. I’m tempted to try again, but also a bit afraid I’ll make it worse!
Step 1 get a complete workshop to build it in 😂
haha!
Level straight edge trick is sweet
Canadian woodworkers Rule!
I've found great e-book on WoodPrix. Good solutions for everyone I think.
You could either put two particular edges or three while leaving the shorter end open, just a though.
You did good
What air quality meter do you use?
This one from Amazon. It seems to work well. I got it because it works with HomeKit so can view air quality from my phone and use it to turn on my air filter if it gets bad. www.amazon.com/Qingping-Monitor-Compatible-Temperature-Humidity/dp/B092HK4BB1/ref=sr_1_4?crid=2G97ILCGTFRB8&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.XIh_zyb5L9JlrhepQ-_cM01dIiVXJ06OC8LntyNLtkFNGKnGB3EnMkHm6jX4rOUm-MJMugxWPRFObzFhwP0OiZ5b8Yq26T0GSa39oezXg8SWJGPqbDpJ2tVji8DCsIMtAaiR-pYanxlNgcDQXjiqMlO9pyOBfg98bN-J64R07DXKfxLHSsMwDQDiR_4oHBOCbcexSGVTyXalRX07taGc1CFvSvX0XKpKW3uuPB_7Lg0.ZZrwBwlOFRsH-YyeYkeg2XZ1MLDIj1E3BP67FWsxyD8&dib_tag=se&keywords=homekit+air+quality+meter&qid=1734108894&sprefix=homekit+air+quality+met%2Caps%2C225&sr=8-4
@ryandaywoodworking thanks for the quick reply.
Loved your video man. CN see your thinking faster than the recording! Love it! I also have a small shop. Dust collection is a pain no doubt! Looking at suitable, affordable option….. it has been tough. The oef 1010 reqf has been great. With existing rails for already-owned Festool kit…. I have been happy, recommend checking out the angle accessories. Thanks for the great videos!! Look forward to future videos!!!
Thanks! I appreciate it. The 1010 with the angle accessories does look really cool...
Looked good
Appreciate it!
Beautiful Job!
Thanks! You guys make amazing products!
I agree 100% with you on juice grooves and handles, they are pretty much useless. Namely, juice grooves add an extra step on the building process which imposes an unnecessary risk of ruining the cutting board, as I've seen in many videos... Nice work btw!
The WEN is not worth the price. Id keep the rikon which will last longer than the WEN
That's good to know! The Rikon just takes up so much space...
I never comment, but I kept thinking 'this guys sounds Canadian or something...' Then you dropped it: You are! A shout out from Ottawa! Keep it up, I'm subscribed. I want to hear about that 3D printer for sure. Been holding off on getting one of those but the writing seems to be on the wall, they're too useful to ignore.
Very Nice! I also hate juice grooves and won't have them on my boards. Have done them on clients boards which I hate to do. Try using a nice damp soft cloth the remove the glue squeeze out after clamping. I found that is saved me a lot of time. I do water pop at 320 then hit it with 400 just long enough to take the pop up hairs down. Any more and you're defeating the purpose. I pour a quarter cup of food safe mineral oil on a board and use a paint brush to brush it in. Usually takes about 30 minutes, some food soak it in quicker like walnut. Then I dry and apply the wax. Once I did my first end grain I never made another face grain....but might one day.
The OF1400 is a great router if you are already on the Festool platform, the main benefit for me is the speed you can change tooling and copying rings.
I love the micro adjust
Your thoroughness in narration helped to fill in the gaps that a lot of other cutting board videos omit. Glad you didn’t let your perceived glut of cutting board videos deter you from making your video. Everyone is unique and I’ve watch plenty in prep for my first board and yours was boots on the ground helpful. That’s my long winded way of saying thanks!
Thanks so much! I really appreciate that!
Well done! Have to say other than price, the OF1400 is by far the best router I’ve used. I do feel silly having spent that amount of $$, but the attachments and dust extraction are worth every penny.
It really is nice... :)
Best of the season from Vancouver Island 🏝️
We sell the 6" 3m net over at kmtools. Great video!
Never even occurred to me to check! Just ordered some. :)
Let's check WoodPrix ebook if you want to make it cheaper and better.
I dont know if they had them in NA (120v) but try find an old OF2000 E/1, made for festool by mafell. Only slightly less power than an OF2200 & only about 1/4 of the rrp, I have 3 of them, yes 3, and absolutely adore them. The ergonimics are perfect, works on the rail and does everything the new ones can. Love mine.
Interesting! I’ll have to look into that.
These are face edge boards?
Yup!
I think we're over the festool shame comments now. buying the rail to go with the router is not the best first choice if you happen to have their tracks saw then the rail is a bonus when you buy the router. there's always a downside to trying to mix too many brands.
Great advantage of this type of accessory is the ability to remove it if you also metal work too. Cutting oils are not good to have around your wood projects. To date I have been using a scrap of a countertop - it works great but because it cost me nothing it also gets used for metal work - I might just buy the LV version so I have an incentive to remove it for metal projects.
Well done!
I have a makita rp2301fc, 3 1/4hp router …. It’s a heck of a router. I would say it’s one of my special purchases
How much you want for drill press? Thats the 12" correct? Assume you got it at lee valley probably. Im in Calgary
I have that sander and something that I didn't account for is the price of 6" sandpaper. Worth it to me, but it should be considered if anyone is on the fence. Secondly, I have a cheap-o drill press and I notice "run out" from either the chuck and/or the table deflecting. Also, I have to manually position belts to change the speed, which means I never change the speed. Hey, wanna trade?
I really struggle to find 6” Cubitron. Especially 80 grit which I use a fair bit of. So you are saying I should keep the drill press… have to find a different spot for the CNC then! I’m actually debating wall mounting it.
Have your new sander and the rotax and the rotax is about 3-4x faster than the 150/5
See, this is the type of thing my wife does not want me to hear…
@ I used the 150/5 95% of the time but if I’m doing a table top the rotax comes out
I’m considering a 3D printer as well, but what turns me off is the length of time it takes to print anything. Do you find the printing time a disadvantage? Or is the outcome worth it?
At this point it’s totally worth it. I can print bins for storage pretty quick. Like under an hour. Bigger jobs I do at night or while I’m working.
Many people view the Festool sander as overpriced; the same is true for Hilti concrete tools. However, the price becomes reasonable when you consider the sanding speed, minimal vibration, and effective dust collection it provides. The 6" model is the way to go. I use mine with a Dust Deputy cyclone and a Rigid shop vac-I’m not quite ready for the Festool vacuum yet as I do consider that way overpriced! The Dust Deputy compensates you each time you empty the drum and do not replace a vacuum bag.
I found a crazy good deal on my Festool vacuum used. Still a lot of money, but it’s the creature comforts. :-)
If you bought the festool dust collector, you would see a huge improvement in your sander. Trust me, I used my rigid vac as well for a while as well and felt the sander wasn't really what all the hype was about. I did some research and asked a few questions. Turns out too much suction prevents the sander from working as it should. The rigid vac was too much suction. When I got festool dust extractor, a huge difference. Now I'm seeing what the hype was all about. Take the leap, you'll be happy you did.
The festool vac is an absolute game changer. If you're running festool tools without a festool dust collector than you don't even know.
Here to echo the same comments. I ran a Ridgid vac with my Festool stuff until I got my CT36. I can't believe the difference.
"I hope not. But who knows what's going to happen?" <----- The words of a Festool For Life person! LOL!
Haha. So true. I know myself too well!
Good video Ryan. I have the same drill press. I saw that table at Lee Valley but wasn't sure how it would fit on the Rikon. Looks like it fits perfectly so your video was very helpful for me. I do think I'd cut some slots in the top so I can clamp things down. For longer stock I can see how you could just use quick grip clamps at the edge of the table. But for smaller pieces it would be useful to have some dovetail or T slots to accommodate clamping.
Glad you found it helpful! I agree, you can never have too many options to clamp stuff down.
Nice setup Ryan - thanks for sharing. Those of us with small garage workshops all face the same issues so it's always nice to see solutions that others have come up with. I'm in Canada too so I understand the additional challenges of keeping the shop warm and also keeping humidity under control when it's -20 outside. I park cars in my shop during the winter so humidity becomes a problem due to snow melting off of them . I run a dehumidifier which helps to keep the rust off the tools and cast iron tables. You mentioned plans for a CNC in your future. Do you have one in mind? Will you manage to find the space for a 4x8 or do you plan to get a smaller one?
My wife grudgingly parks outside, so I don’t have to deal with humidity as much anymore. I even change my shoes in the shop so I’m not tracking snow all over the place. I ended up going with the Longmill CNC from Sienci Labs. I love the idea of supporting a Canadian company, and their shipping and overall cost is much more reasonable than Onefinity. I just couldn’t stomach Onefinity charging shipping from Canada to Canada in USD.
The model I got is 30x30. I debated their 48x30, but don’t think I can make it fit.
I have 2 Ryobi 5" battery powered sanders. No vibration, pigtails, and does a good job for each less than $90 (can't remember actual price). I put a different grit on each sander so I don't have to keep changing paper when I'm batching out multiple projects like cutting boards. Is it as good as a Festool? I'll never know because of the price and I am using my money for other things.
I totally get it! I started with a Milwaukee 5" cordless (I suspect very similar to yours) and it worked great for me. Up until I started doing bigger projects on a deadline. I just found when sanding for hours on end having a cord was helpful and the bigger footprint with faster cutting (and less vibration) made a huge difference. I still use my cordless and wouldn't get rid of it!
@@ryandaywoodworking I'm not in a position to deal with many deadlines unless I have a vendor show to do. I'm not a commercial shop.
Festool sell the best finish sander on the market for a measley 249.99. Running that sander with dust collection, especially festool dust collection is a whole different world. Sorry bout it.
