Sailing to promote conservation, environmental sustainability and clean oceans! Welcome aboard Hakluyt, our electric powered 47 ft - ice-strengthened, steel "eco-expedition" sailing vessel! We are Wes and Judith with Edward, Flynn and Elske (our 4-legged companions). We sold our home and "stuff" and invested everything we have in this amazing project to make Hakluyt as environmentally friendly and OFF GRID as possible.
Hakluyt is built for High Latitude Sailing and these are some the last pristine places left on the planet. To reduce our impacts, we built Hakluyt to leave as little carbon footprint as possible when we travel. Our adventures are focused on high latitude sailing, sports from the boat, like kiteboarding, skiing, climbing and hiking. We like to eat healthy and promote ways to live environmentally friendly from our tiny floating home.

Discovering 110 year old technology used in modern day Americas Cup boats - Report 25
This week we sail further down into the Bras D’or lake system to Baddeck. A quaint and beautiful town that embraces its heritage, history and - tourists. Its a fantastic stop and we stepped back into time to the late 1800’s and dive into the birthplace of the Telephone and the life of Alexander Graham Bell - an extraordinary man that has a rich history far beyond the invention of the telephone - which is what they conventionally teach you about in middle school. We LOVE learning the history of the areas and places we visit and we love sharing it with you. This week we take a little more time to share with you the incredible spectrum of Bell’s inventions and life here in Baddeck Nova Scotia. Living on the water - Bell had a fascination with sea faring far beyond anything we previously had known. Nearly everything Bell designed was FAR ahead of hist time. His home (still kept in the Bell family) was clearly visible to us as we passed by “Red Head” on the water - and even that edifice is a sight to behold!

Crossing the Cabot Straights - Saying goodbye to winter sailing and Newfoundland! Report 24
Переглядів 1,5 тис.Рік тому
We FINALLY depart Newfoundland bound for Nova Scotia. This was a trip we intended to do way back in November December last year - but alas the weather gods decided we would be better off in Newfoundland and the North Atlantic for some winter sailing! And boy what stories we were able to share! Living off grid of the coast of this remote feeling island was an exceptional experience and one we wi...
Last stop before crossing the Cabot Straights - Report 23
Переглядів 1,5 тис.Рік тому
We are about to say goodbye to Newfoundland - finally.... After spending 6 months sailing around the island in winter, we are ready for some warmer temperatures further south. The crossing to Nova Scotia /Cape Breton eluded us all winter, but we are determined to get there this time around. However, first we have only last anchorage to explore. We made our final preparations for crossing to Nov...
Best anchorage in Newfoundland - Report 22
Переглядів 2,4 тис.Рік тому
Lucky for us - the swells were too rough in our intended anchorage and forced us to move around the corner to the spectacular "Cul De Sac" amphitheater! Here we found the most amazing - and arguably the most beautiful anchorage in Newfoundland. Beyond the drop dead spectacular scenery we found yet another old outport just barely noticeable after the years and Mother Nature have almost reclaimed...
Sailing Off Grid around Newfoundland in Winter! - A Short film!!
Переглядів 2,8 тис.Рік тому
This week we present something a little different and something you don't see on other sailing channels - a short film recapping our winter adventure sailing around Newfoundland! All of it from a completely different perspective. We get tons of kudos regarding our "drone" imagery - so we put together a video with nothing but a bird's eye view of this adventure!! We spent the winter sailing our ...
Living and Sailing truly OFF-GRID on our floating home - Report 21
Переглядів 5 тис.Рік тому
In this episode we sail into some of the majestic fjords on the South coast in Newfoundland. Winter just ended and spring is trying its best to show up just in time for us to do some amazing exploring as we inject Hakluyt into the heart of Newfoundland's "fjord-land" wilderness. Hakluyt is our self sufficient off grid solar - wind and electric powered sailboat. Join us as we show you a little a...
Gilbert Caroff Super Disko Steel Expedition sailboat with electric motors! Report 20
Переглядів 13 тис.Рік тому
We have shown bits and pieces of Hakluyt in previous videos - but here is the overview of Hakluyt's main features. Hakluyt is quite different from standard production sailboats in many ways - not only because of her electric motors but her original design incorporated notable features so she was ready for polar regions. She is a mix between a live aboard and expedition style sailboat leaning mo...
Rough sailing - day one back on the ocean again - Report 19
Переглядів 2 тис.Рік тому
We finally get sailing again after 6 weeks of doing repairs and making modifications to Hakluyt. We didn't mind letting Mother Nature blow some of her last breaths of winter while we were tied up in a safe harbour. Our first day out however was a rough one - but it ended up being fortuitous as we discovered one of our (now) favourite anchorages. It feels great to get going again - but that firs...
Sailboat projects and repairs of winter sailing damage - report 18
Переглядів 1,3 тис.Рік тому
We had to take a break sailing and renovate our main berth, which started to mould due to condensation, repair some damages that occurred during our winter sailing journey around Newfoundland and some other boat projects that improve Hakluyt. We chose to stay in the wharf of the little town of Hermitage during our sailboat restoration, where we met incredibly helpful and nice people! The repair...
Finding AMAZING winter anchorages in Newfoundland Fjords!! - Report 17
Переглядів 1,1 тис.Рік тому
Newfoundland is sliced by dozens of fjords on the south coast. We have some time and weather to explore two interesting and very opposite feeling fjords that are situated right next door to each other. First, we enjoy an amazing sail to Jerseyman's Harbour and find a perfect spot to do some exploring. Always a bit unnerving however to anchor between a couple shipwrecks!! Here we find some inter...
Off-grid sailing to a remote beach in Canada - in winter - report 16
Переглядів 1,8 тис.Рік тому
We sail to an amazing white sand beach that would otherwise be mistaken for somewhere in a much lower latitude. The fjords were frozen up so this was a great little gem to stumble upon along the south coast of Newfoundland. Surrounded by frozen lakes and waterfalls - winter still has its grip on the anchorage. But that doesn't stop Judith from taking an icy cold plunge in the beautiful water! A...

After an amazing month spent exploring Burgeo and the surrounding Newfoundland fjords, coves and coastline - the weather finally relented and allowed us to head out again, this time back to the East. East, where we get the chance to sail closer to the coast and discover some more majestic scenery along the southwest coast of Newfoundland in winter. The fjords were all but iced over and locked u...
Refit 2022 Part 2 - Converting our steel sailboat to an "ECO-EXPEDITION" Sailboat - Report 14
Переглядів 1,6 тис.Рік тому
In Hakluyt Sailboat Refit part 2 - we have gutted the interior and are now focused on patching corrosion holes and getting the new Oceanvolt electric motor mounts welded in. Before that - TWO MASSIVE holes have to be cut in the hull to accommodate the servo props and motor mounts. It was a lot of work just to get to this point - but only a drop in the bucket for whats to come! Sailboat restorat...
Our Sailboat is frozen in the ice, serious temperature drop! - Report 13
Переглядів 3,2 тис.Рік тому
After retreating from Grand Bruit back to Burgeo to dodge another series of potent storms, we eventually find some peace in winter's first spell of "calm". However, the calm brought with it bitter cold temperatures and a constant threat of freezing spray warnings which kept us locked - literally locked - in frozen water at the dock. Luckily we were invited to stay at the Coast Guard dock and th...

Boat is for sale, no sign of life in a year…i know life can get in the way, but perhaps a small update if you please? This channel had so much potential🥲
electric motor sucks on a sail boat you guys are going to find out the hard way. you need a diesel
Damn what did that cost you?
I enjoy so much watching your videos.. I just bought a C&C 34 and I'm looking forward to visit Newfoundland and Nova Scotia then Greenland, Faroe Islands and on.. well you get the picture 😊 Your videos are fantastic and well produced ❤❤
Amazing scenery, thank you for sharing ❤ Can you please tell me what month was it.. does the water freeze to the point you can dock to marinas during winter?
A new subscriber family here😊. 🫡🙏👍🏼
Skip to 17:30 if you here for motors and electric stuff
Great sailing. I find that uV from sunlight will damage those polypropylene ropes on those stern spools. Perhaps you could make covers for them.
Hi guys , i’ve just watched your video And loving the idea of going 100% electric. I am in contact with Wayne Peters from Ocean Volt . I’m thinking about the same setup as you have just smaller. I’m looking to purchase an island trader 38, which I intend to sail singlehanded from Portsmouth UK, around Ireland up the West Coast of Britain, up to the Faroe islands then Iceland, and Greenland before going down for Antarctica. But the issues that you guys seem to be having with regeneration !! Would be a big problem for me on such a small boat. I know have lots of videos to catch up on. Wishing you “Fair Winds and Following Seas”.❤️💙😘😘🙏 ,
Regen is vastly oversold by some manufacturers - bordering to being illegal in my opinion.
Awesome footage and video. Many Thanks -
Hey! Did you guys quit the channel? I saw the boat for sale on YachtWorld 😢
gotta keep that radiation away lol
Just finished watching your series, and am hoping you guys continue. I've been to NFLD many times, but have never appreciate it the way you guys presented it with all the scenic coastline drone shots. Especially the winter ones. I'm surprised tourism NFLD doesn't sponsor some of your content. NFLD could be a mecca for this type of cruising. My dream was always to buy a boat and sail N. Pacific and Alaska, however, you've convinced ne NF is a more logical start seeing as I'm already in eastern Canada and have family in NF. I'd love to explore all the fjords an inlets as the are now, at least before they start erecting massive wind turbines along the various pristine coastlines. Anyway, love to see some sailing up the coast of Labrador and the Arctic. Fort Conger would be an interesting destination. Good luck with your ventures.
Could you tell me the make of your stove (not the gimbled cooker). Enjoyed your video thanks for sharing :)
As a descendent of Grand Bruit Billards, having visited there once in 1978, this video is an amazing peak into my families past. Thank you for sharing!
Yoooo! When does your season start again?
50kw engine el is easy to use as engine and power regen same time. Not as a small altimator like bad balmar ore same class. But real diesel el engine up to 100eds of kw. But 20 50kw easy in 50hp diesel
This is why 18:08 you shud have old diesel engine whit big 20 to 50kw el engine over gearbox. Hybrid as diesel can be used in emergensy, BUT MOST OF ALL POWER UP FOR AN HOUR ORE 2 AND GO FROM EMTHY BATTERYS TO FULLY LOADED IN 2H TIME. WHY NOT HAVE THIS ???? HYBRID MAN. REGEN ON UR 15KW ENGINE HAVE BEAN UPDATED WHIT NEW FETURE !!! SEE SVUMA GET FREE UPDATE
Wonderful video. Had 2 great sailing trips on sw coast. Love The Rock
It has been a while. Hope you guys are well, safe and still on the water. Wish you happy sailing and fair winds.
You got the videi all wrong, one should be facing the boat and the items which you are describing and not yourself😂 result: bad video start over 🙏☺️ eager to see more boat!
My Grandfather was from Grand Bruit. He met my Grandmother there. She was the teacher and moved to Grand Bruit from Woody Point to teach school. I would love to go there someday and take my Mother's ashes to Billard Island. It was so nice to see that his house is still standing and the Church too. Beautiful video.
My grandmother was from GB, and my sister lived there for about 30 years, before resettlement. I was visited just after Fiona. Damage to that whole coast was extensive. Beautiful place to visit and forget about the world.
My grandfather was from Grand Bruit, Wesley Billard.
Hi, Are you folk still sailing, if so where?
Love your videos. Thank you for the wonderful tribute to our beautiful Newfoundland 😍🥰
It was as always most enjoyable and entertaining. Since you crossed the Gulf , where did you go?
Much more interesting than Tahiti, it was a cod gold mine Get battery heated snowmobile suits
How thick is the hull
Love this boat!!!
You guys are fantastic
it’s not “abandoned”.
You are tuff' ,sailing in winter in Newfoundland. I plan on sailing there next summer...not winter 😅. Did you visit Fogo? That is where I live. Safe travels .
Newfoundlander here ....... excellent presentation !! One of the best I've seen !! Well done !
Love this. Your channel really should go viral. So under rated
There are no international waters in the Cabot strait or anywhere close to Newfoundland or Nova Scotia Canada!
How much did the electric motor system cost?
Your ship is quite something. What an inspiration!
We visited Grand Bruit on a bicycle/ferry tour of the south coast in august 2005 while it was still alive and beautiful. Stunning scenery. Nice to revisit. Thank you.
Thank you for this wonderful video. We visited Grand Bruit in August '23 to nice weather. We took images, but this video is a great memory of an incredible place that few will ever visit. We did meet one former resident that came back for the summer to fish and hunt. Trip of a lifetime.
Ha THANKS for the tour of my own province I like near lewisporte winter sailing amazing.
Thanks for sharing with us ❤🙏🙏🙏
I really admire your spirit to move forward in the cold,Thanks for sharing the song when you had friends over for chile, that’s how I feel like the words in that song 🙂
