overpriced garbage
You should bring Land Rover and compare
Definitely I am going to reach out and see if they will lend me one to test
That model 4Runner does NOT come equipped with a "center differential" as incorrectly stated at 1:34 - more misinformation!!!
Yes I meant transfer case, sometimes you misspeak when recording...In the 4Runners the locking center diff provides a similar function to putting the transfer case in 4H. The ORP 4R uses a manual transfer case… which I did also note in this video.
I personally prefer the manual transfer case lever for a couple reasons. First, one less thing to go wrong. Second, I feel it’s a more set it and forget it compared with wondering if the electric system is engaged or not. Also, with the more electric options it gets confusing which system to engage while 4Runner with 4Lo and ATRAC your good to go.
I also like the manual transfer case, it works really well in this. I didn’t like it as much in my jeep
I had a Toyota FJ Cruiser and now I have a Honda Passport. I prefer the Honda much better. Just easier to drive in various road conditions not needing to shift in and out of 4WD. Also, the Honda being a unibody, it just rides and handles much better than than body on frame design. For those who doesn't off road or only light offroad, a unibody AWD car is perfectly capable with the right tires.
Glad I brought a 23 TRD PRO 4Runner and will stay with me for ever 👍👌
Love that. What color?
While I think the answer os obvious I still want to ask... I'm guessing you obviously cant drive on dealed roads permanently with centre diff locked And if the answer is no.... then to me at least the day to day use of the AWD system looks vlose to useless. Wont help you of you hit a slippery patch at all
22 SR5 Premium in New England with almost 16k miles on it. Only mod I’ve done was get Wildpeak AT3Ws for winter driving/ski trips. Also undercoated it due to all the salt. Enjoy yours!
My little bro has never owned expensive cars, so even small things on a crap Lexus impress him.
Baxter Performance called and said your USA made billet aluminum cartridge-to-canister oil filter adapter is ready to be ordered/shipped. Buy once, cry once and never look back. Also, ditch the 0W-nonsense. Hollywood Mechanic did an excellent video about a year ago on the subject called “You’re using the wrong oil, w/receipts”. Cheers!
83k is definitely a stretch, but the base versions are out there for nearly 20k less. And that is mighty tempting.
Service all three of our Toyota’s ever 5k. The oldest a 2007 FJ with 190k still running strong with only a small leak in one valve cover! Mobil 1
Laughs in Subaru
I purchased a new 2024 SR5 premium in Ice Cap (July/2024). This has been my favorite vehicle that I've owned. I've had Caddy, Lincoln, Lexus, Mitsubishi and Hondas. Great review !! Thank you !!!
Nice! Me too, although I think my ‘23 GX460 and my 4R are tied for my favorites
I’ve looked at a GX550… honestly I much prefer my 4Runner. Better materials, layout and it feels more roomy. Plus mine is paid for! lol! Thanks for the demonstration
Yeah 4R is a great vehicle, enjoy it! Thanks for watching!

4Runner doesn’t have center differential. Only 4Runner Limited has that. You are demoing a off-road model.
Yes limited has a full time systems with center diff and this model (ORP) has a manual transfer case, which I said.

@@CarsNoCap Limited has full time and part time and 2wd. Best of everything
All the trails you drove through none of that really needs even 4Low or any other modes except 4WD (4H). that's all it needs. Also idk why ppl modify their 4runners so much. just do a basic level with bilsteins 5100 and keep same size tires for best on and off-road performance while improving handling and retaining your fuel economy.
Bummer about KDSS. I have 2023 ORP and it does have it. I didn't realize they dropped that in 24.
3:54 Atlanta to Raleigh. I'm i the first to catch that?
4runner is the real winner here. Passed every test. GX failed 3 out of 5.
Technically it didn’t fail anything, you just need to lock the center diff to match the 4R in 4H
Jeep hands down has the best 4x4 system....
Great review, yes, 83k is lots of money but this is a lot more value when compared to Ford Bronco Raptor for 90K or a highly unreliable Range Rover...and it keeps its value really well...so, to me this is a bargain
Thank you! And agreed, I’d buy this over a bronco raptor or Range Rover any day of the week. Since it’s a new model year, tbd on resale value but you’re right that the previous gen has held value very well
I love GX550 OT+...
For that price it better do way better😂
lol I hear you
I would like a 550 in the second or third year. 2025 or 2026. I think it's worth the price. But i would also rather get one a year or two old and let someone else take the hit.
Agreed. Always good to let them work out the kinks of a new model and then buy one slightly used to avoid new car depreciation
Built like a Glock 🤟🏽
Yep!
Curious what the tire pressure was during drive. I have read dealers have not noticed overinflated tires from shipping . Could account for the vibrations noticed.
Oh that’s an interesting point, I didn’t check but could have been at play here. I’ve driven other GX550s and didn’t have this issue so figured its tire related
@ I receive mine in a week I’ll see how well their PDI is related to tire pressure ha! Online many have said the dealers must have skipped checking tire pressures etc.
I’m starting boycott Toyota, no longer consider Toyota anymore since they changed all lines to hybrid. I’m gun shy
You can still buy non-hybrids from Toyota/lexus just fyi
The oil odometer reset procedure?
Your review is right on point. I agree with everything you said. This vehicle is awesome but it would have been perfect if it was available in a V8.
Thank you! And agreed, wish it still had a V8
Wins just bc the crawl control was “less violent” lol 😂
What a piece of shit!!!! Toyota is dead to me
Good solution, especially since the dipsick always picks up oil on one side from the tube.
It really does, thanks!
From a v8 taking premium gas to a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6, which, "probably" takes premium gas? how did the Lexus GX550 REALLY improve? I suppose I am supposed to take my media influencers dumb-down pills and forget the 2022 Tundra's adventures in downsizing: "pay no attention to the 100,000 V6 turbo-motors in 2022-2024 Tundras now being replaced." Kinda makes the first few thousand Tundra 2022's which reported twin turbo wastegate problems-only, sound like the good old days. I just learned a new factoid bout my 5th gen 4Runner, it is the last toyota sold on US shores that had hydraulic steering. Now its all about electric steering. Waall, at least it allows the car to drive itself "automatic lane centering." The engineer admitted the driver's feel for the road with the hydraulically assisted mechanical steering is better than the steer by wire electric steering.'"but the electric steering is so much more fuel efficient." Where does the save a drop of gas and rescue the planet madness stop? One day those influencers are going to start harping about how much more efficient your body would be if you just had your cojones removed.
I made sure I bought a 4Runner BEFORE the 2025’s came out. I wanted no parts of the new engine. Zero regrets and just what works for me. Everyone has to do what works for them.
Agreed, same thing here.
Install a Fumoto Drain Valve on oil pan much easier
Definitely going to look into these! Thanks!
@ 👍🏽🤙🏽
Well said , I enjoy my 2024 4Runner 😊 .
Thank you! Same, it’s a great vehicle
The high 4X4 is not to get you unstuck in a situation like this. It is a smooth transmission of power to the front wheels which control the direction of the vehicle, with the intention of allowing them more grip in snow or rain, in this way you have more control of the trajectory. It is very smooth because if it were aggressive it would generate the opposite effect and you would lose control. The power transmission in these snow and rain conditions has to be more subtle, which is why it has no effect in getting you stuck, since there is another tool in the vehicle for that, and that is why it is there.
Agreed! The roller test is a very rare and specific situation. The full time system in the GX is very effective for real world conditions!
😂 but other regular ass none off-road AWD SUV works just fine. Why toyota can't do the same?
👍Exceptionally informative review! Kudos and thank you.
Thank you! More to come
4Runner is the winner
Good vid
Appreciate it!
Well, in May of this year, I did the same thing you did, bought a Underground TRD ORP, after having a junk Bronco with new tech, no way I wanted to wait for another "new" car. I'm sure Toyota is better than Ford, but the 5thGen 4Runner is one of the most reliable vehicles EVER! Plus, what Toyota doesn't offer, you can find it in the aftermarket. As you mention, the vehicle is not only built in Japan, but entirely in Japan at one factory and maybe the best automotive factory in the world, considering the quality of the vehicles rolling off it's line. The engine is loud, only 5 speed auto, but the reliability is way ahead of the Wrangler and Bronco, like light years ahead. The sunroof and rear window is really cool, easily replaces the doors and tops off. And much quieter. I also went without the KDSS too. I bought the Apex sway bar disconnects and other than being a bear to install, that sway bar is super hard metal, it's articulation is way better off road, i recommend them once you get going with your mods.
Spot on^ congrats on the new 4R. I’ve logged 6k miles so far and still really loving mine every time I crank it up and go for a drive
not a fair comparison. Needed to test these side by side with the GX with the center diff locked. This tells us nothing about which car has a better 4wd system.
Both were tested… 4H in 4Runner = center diff lock in GX550.
Great video! I use an oil filter drain tube that I found on Amazon for about $15$. It's brass and screws in after removing the plate at the bottom of the filter. There's no mess whatsoever.
Oh cool, I’ve heard of these I need to look into getting one! Thanks for watching!
I will stick with the old timer - the great 4Runner. It’s the peoples car - but unfortunately that will change in 2025.
Yes it is!
Yes it will change. Instead of an overpriced slab-sided dinosaur with an outdated, underpowered powertrain, you will get an overpriced athletic looking truck with a more powerful and fuel efficient powertrain.
Don’t steal the roller test from @tfloffroad 😂
Watching this video made made feel I need a masters degree in 4x4 engagement.
lol it feels that way sometimes
Im a big fan if this Lexus. Only cons for me is the fridge in the middle console and it needs a bigger fuel tank.
Same it’s a good vehicle!
A simple formula: full time AWD + central diff lock = part time 4wd without front/back diff locked
