The Weimar Republic, the division of Germany into East and West. the second world war and the holocaust. the burning of books and much more. There was no German ‘empire’ in the Roman times. (As you mention) It was a collection of tribes. The Romans were unable to subdue them so preferred to contain them - to the east of the Rhine. To the Romans they were Germani and the unconquered lands, Germania.
