Aprilia SR GT 125 : Second Oil & Filter Change
As the bike is now two years old I thought I’d do a second oil and filter change. Although not technically due until the 6000 mile mark (I’ve only done 2500 miles), it will hopefully keep the engine happy.

It’s that time again, another 2 years have flown by and I need to resit my CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) Day in order to continue riding my scooter. Back to the excellent Harley’s Motorcycle Training in Edinburgh for top tuition and plenty of laughs too. harleys.training/branches/edinburgh/

Still putting my new DJI Osmo Action 4 though it’s paces, very impressed so far. Here is my run today down Easter Road in the Leith area of Edinburgh, home to Hibernian football club and a variety of small independent local shops. The camera is mounted on the visor of my open face Caberg Riviera helmet.

Thought today was warm and sunny so could carry out a leisurely post winter check over of the bikes condition. In fact it was sunny and freezing so video is shorter than I planned !! Apologies also for the wind noise. The good news is everything points to the SR GT 125 being a robust machine, well suited to our more challenging Northern European climate.

Thanks for the tutorial, going to do my next one soon, will let you know how I get on! Just short of 6000 miles on mine, at this rate, should last me for life! ;-) I was in touch with someone who had hers up in the 90'000s (miles) before it needed work. No idea if she has it back up and running yet!
By the way, when you remove the gauze filter, it's a good idea to check the mesh for any unexpected debris before replacing, as it can give you early warning of unusual engine wear.
@@luddite6239 Thanks, I actually did that but forgot to switch the video on. It was clear of any debris so all should be good.
The good thing about those Piaggio engines is they only take one litre of oil, so regular changes don't break the bank. If the motor is essentially the same as my Gilera, then the sump plug torque is 24 - 30 Nm. Also, for removing the filter, get yourself a "Baby Boa". It's actually like a rubber strap wrench but designed for the kitchen to remove lids off pots of jam and the like. It's less than a tenner and I haven't found a filter that it won't undo, car or bike.
@@luddite6239 thanks very much for the Baby Boa suggestion, I’ll look into that before next filter change. I think the problem was largely just me over tightening it last time.
@scottishzoomer Even if you don't need it for the Aprilia, you can still use it to open your pickled onions!
I'm seriously considering getting an SR GT as a commuter & knockabout but i might want to occasionally do a bit of distance on it. What's the weather protection like? Is that screen more cosmetic than utilitarian? And are perfunctory rain proof trousers enough beind the fairing? Thanks for posting your videos, they're very enjoyable. 👍
@@bobritter7197 thanks for watching the videos, much appreciated. I use the bike all year round so am used to getting a good soaking from time to time. The screen is really more cosmetic, I have a friend who has the 200cc version and he has installed a much bigger screen which he likes, I’m just not a fan of big screens for their look. The front fairings are quite good for rain protection, but decent kit is still required for the worst days. A great scoot to own though, lovely to ride.
@@scottishzoomer👍 thanks very much.
First, grease the gasket of the filter, then put it in place, don't squeeze too much
Buzzeti tight would have been enough! Infact really hand tight tends to be enough. I think your causing your own problem 😅. Next time just tighten it with the tool, put your oil in,start the engine and check for leaks,if there's no leak from the filter area leave it as it is 🙂
@@bally632 thanks, appreciate the advice. This one is only Buzzetti tight and no issues when I ran the engine later. You live and learn.
Bonjour de France . Est-il possible de mettre les liens pour acheter les outils et l’huile please ? Est-il possible aussi d’avoir les commentaires en français ? Bonne vidéo continuez.👌

Was just thinking about you and your SR GT 125 this morning and up you pop with a video mate...You had any major problems with the Aprilia ?? 😀
@@The_Arby Hi, hope you are doing well. Delighted to say no issues at all to report, the bike is still purring along happily as it heads towards it’s third winter. Tyres are still in good condition too.
@@scottishzoomer Cool...Thanx for reply mate 🙂
Good video again m8
Purchased my srgt 125 sport last week traded in my Honda pcx 125 for this must say the srgt is a great bike with a bit more power than my Honda pcx only currently covered 180 miles at the minute though thanks for the videos 👍
Snap buddy I have had 3 pcx best scooters on the planet bulletin proof if looked after last on bought 2020 and done 52000 and only went through 3 sets of tyres but sadly the garage would not take bike in for trade as it needed welding on frame so stripped it down and sold everything as parts got £1900 and used it to the srgt for a change 3 25 days old and covered 940miles cracking looking bike and yeah higher top speed but she can drink the fuel now my 7 tank overall happy with it.
@@Tommo24 thanks for watching the videos, glad you’re enjoying them. Had a PCX myself a few years ago, a great scoot but I prefer the SRGT.

I had a Ghost XL Pro and it was truly dreadful. The battery would not hold a charge and despite reaching out to Drift on many occasions, and the fact it was still in warranty, they would not help at all. Their after sales service is non existent and, interestingly, you will not find an address or telephone number for them anywhere on their website!! I would highly recommend not buying one of these cameras but go for something like the DJI Oslo Action 4, a far better all round camera.
@@markchester6591 Hi, thanks for your thoughts. I can’t comment on the Drift Ghost XL Pro, but my standard Drift Ghost Xl has lasted around 2 years now with no issues at all and it is used in all weathers. I needed a new audio connector lead and the Drift website was constantly out if stock so I emailed the company who were good enough to locate and send me one free of charge. Looks like my experience with Drift has been very different to yours. Interestingly I did ditch the GoPro a few weeks ago, I found it buggy, unreliable and the battery life was terrible. Bought a DJI Osmo 4 which I agree is a fantastic camera, everything the GoPro promised (but didn’t deliver) and more.
You also can replace the horn and install a Stebel Magnum TM/1 with 139 db for example. This might be more effective 😏. I will get one but first I need to find out how to replace it on my SR GT.
Hi could I ask what size suspension covers you got to fit thanks
@@Tommo24 Hi, they were 30cm, slightly longer than the 27cm that seems to be fairly standard
@@scottishzoomerthanks very much very much appreciated 👍
As a seasoned biker(Ducati/Guzzi etc etc) i watch your videos based on my intent to buy an SRGT 125 to trailer behind my VW California, I’ve found them invaluable and they have convinced me to purchase one… my only disappointment is that you may decide to give up ‘biking’ in favour of public transport…. Please don’t, your content is unbiased and informative.. perhaps you should take a leap forward and continue reviewing motorcycles? post CBT because I think you are very good at it ! Just my thoughts 😮
@@hampo9558 Hi, thanks very much indeed for your kind remarks, really appreciated. I’ve certainly no immediate plans to ditch the scooter so hopefully I’ll be able to keep the videos going for a while yet. Best of luck with your SRGT, they are great machines.

Can you send me a link on the mirror buddy, Do you this better than the pcx?
@@ewanmcgovern Hi, the mirrors themselves are just the stock ones. I added mirror extenders to improve the rear view, just search eBay for 10mm mirror extenders Yamaha fitting, lots of sellers doing them. The PCX is a great scooter but I prefer the Aprilia, it’s a higher riding position and it handles beautifully. Thanks for watching the video, all the best.
I have just bought this 125 as my trusty Honda pcx which is the mutts mutts 4 year 47000mls clock it gets delivered on Friday any good accessories for bike
@@ewanmcgovern Hi, had a PCX myself in the past and it was a great scooter. Whether the Aprilia will last 47000 miles remains to be seen but in terms of handling I prefer it to the PCX. In terms of accessories it’s worth keeping an eye on AliExpress as this seems to be where new things appear, there isn’t much available in terms of “official” accessories. Thanks for watching the video, all the best.
A helpful video indeed. I wish you a successful and trouble free operation with it. Thanks.
I’ve just bought a 125 and will have to book my first cbt, I’m really nervous about it already and I don’t even pick the bike up until tomorrow. 😅
Ordered one for my new e bike awesome ❤😊
great stuff ... just the same in glasgow i ride a vespa and the roads are full of ruts and pot holes ... the roads dept office should be forced to ride a bike so he or she knows how crap the roads are
£175 is ridiculous 😞 How much do you pay for fully comp insurance mate ??
Accidentally deleted my comment when trying to edit it, whoops! Was going to ask why you didn't get a 125 license, but then I reached the part of the video where you mentioned the bus pass. For anybody else on a CBT, you can take your license on your 125 if you don't fancy a bigger bike (and paying lots of money for lessons/renting a bike for the test). You still need to pay insurance, but your current provider can normally provide that for a small fee. Works out slightly more than renewing the CBT, but you only need the license once. I'm thinking of doing that next year when mine expires. Also if you've got lots of cash you can get some pretty nippy electrics on a 125 license, like a Zero S.
What if you had failed? You should do the test. Less money in the long run and I bet the insurance is cheaper afterwards.
It’s almost impossible to “fail” a CBT. You’d have to be completely incompetent. I’ve been on a few CBT’s and only ever seen one person who wasn’t allowed to continue due to their inability to ride.
@@scottishzoomer I know it is impossible to fail a non-test. That is why I said it........I am just wondering why not go for the full 125cc licence? Insurance would be cheaper as I said.
Hello! Nice video although I miss one topic (which I always miss with the SR GT reviews BTW :P), which is the scooter's weather protection. I often use my 2018 PCX at low degrees (2-3 Celsius), and I'm sorry to say it doesn't have great protection. Those cuttings in the plastics are looking good, but they drive all the wind to one's groin and ankles. :( I would be very interested in the Aprilia's wind protection, especially it has those little "winglets" on the fairing. Upper body protection would be also interesting with a higher windscreen as well (I mean how much air can escape between the screen and the fairing next to the dashboard). Would you mind to tell me a few words about weather protection? :)
Hi, glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for your question. Like you I use my bike all year round and in Scotland that can often mean wind, rain and cold. I previously owned a PCX myself and although it was a great scooter, I prefer the SR GT in every respect. I would say the weather protection is better overall although no scooter is perfect. You can get larger screens for increased cover but personally I’ve never been a fan of large screens so haven’t bothered with that. To be honest I tend to rely more on clothing for protection than the bike itself but the SR GT does a decent job of helping out.
@@scottishzoomer Thank you for the detailed answer! I'm especially glad that you owned a PCX and could give me some perspective, it was very reassuring. :) Yeah, the PCX is nice but I need something more in some respects so now I'm gathering infos about the SR GT 200 and the Nmax 155. Any info that can help me to decide is appreciated. :D
Wow Nice
How do you open?
The panels surround the seat area, to access you just lift the seat
How to check coolant level?
Nice mod. My rule is to never put an open bottle of milk inside scooter seat. 🙂
안녕하세요 혹시 시동걸고 헤드라이트 , 끄고 키고 할 수도 있나요? ㅠㅠ turn on[off] the headlights

Thank you, you save my money. But I am sure that aprilia hates you. hehe
Do you have to screw dipstick all in for oil check or just put on top of tread? User manual are little unclear.
Hi, I think you are supposed to wait until the engine is cold then screw the dipstick fully in to take a reading, but I agree the manual isn’t 100% clear
So for oil check you must screw dipstick all the way in? Thats the opposite of other scooters and motorcycles.
Sat on a SR GT125 at my local bike shop Sunday, I'm only 5' 9" and it was too small. How tall are you?
Hi, I’m 6’2”, plenty of room on it for me
Logo on grips should face the front looking good
realy useful video mate thanks
Thanks very much
Just done 6000 miles on mine hasn’t missed a beat great little scooter, didn’t like the the stock tyres
That’s good to hear. About to renew my CBT so should have the bike another couple of years at least
Hi, do you know how to change the mileage reader from Kilometres to Miles?
Hi, this is direct from the manual: with the ignition switch turned to off press and hold the mode button and simultaneously turn the ignition switch to on. Release the button, the icons mi, km, C, F will flash. Briefly press the mode button until the desired icon is displayed steady. Press and hold the mode for at least 1 to 5 seconds to change the unit of measurement - Hope this helps
I'm kicking myself for not looking at this scooter before I purchased my Nmax, I like my Nmax, it's a great scooter, but the Aprilia looks amazing!
Hi, I briefly had an Nmax many years ago before it came a cropper in an accident. My lasting memory of the bike was that it could be a bit of a handful on a windy day.
@@scottishzoomerI totally agree, I thought it was just me, even with a light wind it's pushing me sideways. I'm going to take another look at the Aprilia on Sunday at my local dealership.
@alanhayward6719How did you like it?
For a small displacement scooter the oil filter is not necessary, just a pain and a profit gaining from aprilia...got bigger scoots without filter and works totally fine
Great video, amazing scooter👍
Nice, just got an insta 360X4 for my SR GT 125 but haven't edited any vids yet, might try it tonight
Thanks, my Nephew has an Insta 360 which I must borrow sometime. Very impressed with the DJI so far.
Thanks for all the SR GT content. A friend of mine told me not to use shock covers. He said he once used it on his Yamaha or something and the friction between the cover material and the springs stripped the paint off on some sections, which subsequently got rusted. On the other hand, your springs look fine. Maybe I should use them after all, I don't know.
Hi, thanks very much for watching the videos. Can’t say I’ve heard that criticism of shock covers, they seem to be keeping mine in decent condition so far through two Scottish winters, but interesting to hear. Best wishes.
